Good for low altitude, roll the dice above 20,000 -
I've had these boots for 8 years and have used and abused them. Worked great in the lower 48. Took them to Aconcagua and damn near lost my toes on summit day. Anything below -10 toes start getting numb. Fortunately I escaped with Frost nip on both big toes, but avoid cold temps in these boots. Great for Raineer and the Sierras in California. Also good in the Alps. DO NOT USE ABOVE 17,000 FEET!!!

THE CRUEL SHOES -
I rented these for a Rainier summit attempt. I'm normally a size 13. Tried these in a 14 but too short in the toes. Spent a day in the 15's and started to get hot spots on the outer edge of both feet just behind the base of the pinky toes. Traded them in for 16's which felt pretty good. Unfortunately -- once pushing for the summit -- the hot spots got worse and by the time I was done I had a bad blister on one foot and hamburger on the other. Still enjoyed Ranier though, and will be getting La Sportivas as soon as my feet heal.
Lesson: if youre putting the time and expense out to do a serious climb, don't roll the dice on rentals.
Of course, your foot may be different and these boots may work for you, but they were a bad experience for me.

 | | Dear Zappos,
I want to thank you for your incredible service. I ordered a pair of shoes on Monday (Labor Day) and received them on Thursday morning--- don't know how you did it, as I live in a small city 50 miles west of Albany, NY.
Sincerely,
Rosemary B.
P.S.-- Just been reading the great article in the new New Yorker --- sounds like a fun place to work!! | | ~ Rosemary B., September 11 2009
