I've suffered from severe plantar fasciitis, calf cramps, and foot cramps for several years. I also have wide feet with an unusual shape that results in most shoes cramping my little toes. I've tried several orthotics and probably 150 different pairs of shoes from many manufacturers. (I don't know how I'd survive without Zappos.) First, about MBTs: this is my second pair. It takes several weeks to learn to walk in these shoes; they really work your foot and lower leg, and they change your posture, forcing you (if you let them) to stand straighter. They're heavy, so you can't run in them or even walk really fast. In the end, it's worth it. I credit MBTs with relieving my plantar fasciitis, mainly by strengthening my feet. Important: I tried them with orthotics for a while, but that doesn't really work; orthotics are just not designed to work in this kind of shoe, and according to the MBT website you should avoid them if your feet can stand it. About the Karanis: in most respects these are fantastic shoes. They look terrific as a dress shoe (hard for an MBT to do, given the gigantic sole). Their shape accommodates my 4E foot, unlike almost every D-width shoe on the market. They are lighter (by 5 ounces per pair) than my first pair of MBTs. The sole is extremely comfortable, very well cushioned. MBT appears to have changed the shape of the sole slightly from the other model I have; the result is a smoother rocking action that I really enjoy. For the first time in years I look forward to walking. They do have one significant drawback. There is a substantial chunk of leather and thread at the joint between the tongue and the rest of the upper, which digs painfully into the top of my foot on one side. On the other side, the tongue is just slightly too long, digging into my ankle. I've worn them for a couple of weeks and logged maybe 25 miles of walking, so these problems should have disappeared if it were merely a matter of breaking them in, but they haven't. Nevertheless, I'd much rather put up with these livable pains than with totally debilitating plantar fasciitis. On balance, these are terrific shoes.
