For my situation the shoe is perfect. Very comfortable, good support. I feel it would be a great shoe for a nice mountain walk, which is what it is designed for, but I use them on concrete. I use inserts, have a very narrow, long flat foot, and I really like these shoes.

Having extra wide feet, it is a challenge finding shoes to fit, so I am not a stranger to New Balance. Though comfortable, they tend to wear fast. These shoes were a pleasant surprise for me. They are tough, built like a tank, yet very comfortable and surprisingly light. I have not hit the trail with them yet, but I know they will fill my needs.

I wanted a boot which offered comfort in the wet weather of Chicago's fall, winter and spring. Though the thought of "overkill" entered my mind when I debated buying this boot, I was relieved when I received it. The boot was stiff out of the box and took a few walks to loosen up: My ankles took the beating with some chafing. Once my ankle and boot were acclimated the boots were very comfortable. I had no problem with the tongue being sewn in on only one side. I'm very happy with the boot. Come on Mother Nature, bring on the nasty Chicago weather!

I ordered these boots as a Birthday gift for my son. There was no shipping fee, and they arrived quickly, right when they said they would. He loves them! He has wide feet, and these came in wide, and they are very comfortable and warm. I would recommend Zappos to anyone!

I love these shoes! I wear a 13B, narrow. Can't find shoes like this in the store (other than New Balance) and even if a local store will order, I get stuck if the shoe does not fit or I don't like the look. Zappos is great. Better price than the store, free shipping, no hassle return if they are not to my liking or fit. I can't be happier. Waterproof and comfortable, kept me dry and happy at a rainy football field last Friday. Awesome!

Sent them back because of the tongue. The tongue of this boot wrapped a long way around my ankle (because only one side is free to move) and really dug into my ankle. I have had very good luck with Dunham boots (now owned by New Balance), but these are a big step backward in terms of comfort.

New Balance makes a low quality hiker. New Balance should be ashamed for selling such a low quality boot. After one year these boot are ready for the garbage. They have fallen apart. The EEEE is a very narrow fit and the mono-gusseted tongue (who's idea was that?) had a very long break in period of about one month worth discomfort. I walk about 5 miles a day along railroad tracks and hiking trails with my dog. The Garmont Sherpas I owned lasted for eight years. Save your money and invest in a better quality boot.

After trying nearly every boot out there I am extremely happy to have found these. Having narrow low volume feet and being an outdoorsman is not a happy situation; however, these boots make it better. I was looking for an all leather boot that I could use 3 seasons, that would keep my feet warm in the snow, dry in the rain, and be tough enough for the Smokey Mountains. I don't have a ton of miles on them yet due to the hot and humid weather. I have worn them everyday to work for about two weeks walking up and down steps and from building to building. I also have taken them to the local park for a couple 2-3 mile hikes. Trying to walk up all the steep hills to test out the fit. Even on one the these hikes, I got caught in a summer rain storm. The New Balance 1500 are no doubt waterproof. I was soaked to the bone but my feet were dry. These boots are quickly becoming my favorite pair of shoes. I had a lot of problems with the tongue (which is the only bad part of these boots) at first, but being very pleased with the fit on the rest of the boot I took a chance. The seam is the whole problem; just too much material is sown together at one spot. Here is how you can fix it. Take a hammer and some hard (block of wood will work) and just beat the mess out of the seam. Works just fine now. It is still a stupid design. For being an all leather boot they do breathe very well. I will not lie; my feet do sweat in them however no more than my Asolo's that were leather and fabric combo. They have toe protection however a little more would be great. Not a big deal. I would suggest getting a good set of insoles. The ones that come with the boots are about as cheap as they come. Come on, New Balance, you can put better insoles than these. Overall, I am very pleased so far. Compared to other name brands with the same features the price is great. I only gave them 4 stars because of the tongue problem and lack of quality insoles.

First be aware that, unlike their shoes, the boots are not made in the U.S.A. The overall quality of the boot is fair. The unusual gussetting of the tongue is not really an issue but the many seams are. They poke through the inner lining and cause irritation. Heavy socks or additional protection is recommended. No problem with wet weather, feet stayed dry. Soles provide good traction in wet or dry conditions.

Great outdoor shoe by NB. Outdoor ready; but tennis/running shoe feel. Great! I have a normal/medium foot width; but ordered a wide. Glad I did. If you use for outdoor use with thick socks, a regular width may be too narrow and tight.

This shoe looks good and addresses my need for a wide shoe, but they made a strange redesign in the tongue configuration that is a poor decision. Rather than the tongue opening straight out like is conventional this one only opens on one side. This causes the rigid tongue to rest to one side when wearing the shoe (the outside of my foot) and it really pushes on the leg three inches above the ankle. Poor design that really wasn't needed for a company that is just entering the boot arena. Their specialty is wide comfortable footwear and they shouldn't be reinventing the wheel with the tongue redesign.
Other brands recommended by reviewer: Love New Balance in general for their ability to address the wide shoe needs of people, but this shoe is not one of their best.

These boots were excellent I recently took them on a hiking trip and they were comfortable, didn't rub my feet and kept my feet dry. My only complaint is that the lacing system is a little awkward and if you do not get them laced tightly enough they will come unlaced at the top.

Great boots. I did what everyone says NOT to do and wore these out of the box, first time, on a 4 day rim-to-rim backpacking trip across Grand Canyon. 42 lb pack, hard downhill and uphill grades, HOT, uneven terrain, and came back without a single blister and very happy feet. I chose these by putting a lot of stock into the Backpacker Magazine Editor's choice rating and the fact that as an avid tennis player New Balance has always made my feet feel great after a pounding on the court. I got the EE width and wore liners and thick hiking socks and had no side rubbing. I could vary the fit for up or downhill by lacing tighter or lower as necessary. Through mud and immersion stream crossings, totally dry. Only con may be they come up a bit higher than some boots which adds great stability, but did cause bruising of the outside of my legs 3 or 4 inches above the ankle, but I attribute that to not breaking them in prior to hiking.

My comment on the boot tongue is that it is different. Only one side is gusseted. Strange at first but opens up as the boots break in. Although tight when putting the boots on there is no compromise while wearing the boot. All the internal padding begins to lay down as the boot breaks in. Like all supportive boots I’ve had they are a bit stiff when new. But that is why we buy them to protect our ankles. I learned a long time ago to pre stress the bending areas with my hands. I’ll do it while watching television. Helps a lot and makes break in a lot shorter. A month and two hikes later the boots feel great. I would gladly buy another pair.

Substitute for the Waffle Stomper? I don't think so...
These boots are not an appropriate substitute for the Waffle Stomper (which is why I bought them). They are much narrower in the toe, are not as well built and are very stiff. Unfortunately, there are so few choices in my size (men's 8 4E), that I had no choice but to keep them and try to make them work. What a drag. I say: BRING BACK THE WAFFLE STOMPER!
Other brands recommended by reviewer: Am going to try the Propet: the only other choice available. Will post review about that, next.

I live in the boondocks and have very wide feet which are almost impossible to fit. These boots fit like they were made for me. Very comfortable from the start. And the service is outstanding. Important for me since I have no convenient shopping.

Good Winter Boot -
I bought these boots because of an impending ice and snow storm. They served me well...kept my feet dry and warm. The unusual tongue design of being permanently attached on one side makes for a waterproof boot. The boot was more comfortable than my last two mass-market pairs and I will take them to Alaska this spring for a bit of hiking and touring.

You are always supposed to get one size bigger with Recs. NEVER get your size b/c they run small! I have two pairs now! About to buy them all.

After searching several large retailers of outdoor gear I discovered very few hiking boot manufactures make hiking boots in wide widths, so I went to the web and found that New Balance has a new, great looking hiking boot in EE and EEEE widths. Much to my surprise the stores who stock NB shoes don't stock this boot nor do the three New Balance stores in town. Someone suggested I check out Zappos.com, so I ordered NB's MO1500 boots in a 10.5 EE. I liked what I received though the boots were a bit snug, so on a Sun evening I ordered another pair in 10.5 EEEE. Much to my surprise they showed up at my door on Monday afternoon. They fit great and broke in with very little use after a day of cutting wood in the rain (my feet stayed completely dry). The very next weekend I put them to the test on a rough terrain overnight hiking trek. These boots provided me with great support and cushioning as I carried a 46 lb pack and I experienced no problems what so ever with these great boots! The lacing system is a bit quirky at first, but after you get the hang of it they lace easily and there is so slippage. As a first time Zappos shopper, what most impressed me is the customer service I experienced when I called Zappos about returning the first pair of boots. They actually apologized for me having to use my credit card a second time, saying, "If you had only called us we would have sent you another pair without you having to make a second charge, but we will issue you a credit immediately on the first pair." They then walked me through how to print out a prepaid UPS Return Ticket on my computer to return the first pair of boots and even offered to look up the closest UPS Store for me. This was at 5:30 a.m. their time - I didn't realize they work 24x7! Without a doubt, Zappos has the best retail website and the most professional customer service people I have ever experienced. Zappos' free shipping and free return is a real plus! Net, net, great boots for the money backed by great service and speed from Zappos. I am sold on Zappos!

If you have a narrow foot like mine, this boot is a God send. It cups my heel and can be tightened snugly around my forefoot. (May run a little short) P.S. if ordered a 7 1/2 N. my usual size is a 7 N, but if always order a half size larger in new balance.

Awesome winter boot!
These boots keep your feet nice and toasty warm and dry. However, they do take a little breaking in and are quite stiff at first... once you break them in, they're great! Got these in a 13 Wide (4E), and its hard to find boots in this size so I was really excited to find these.

Decent boot, but with a couple of drawbacks -
I've bought a number of New Balance products over the years and have always been very satisfied with the quality, look, feel, etc. The boot seems okay except that (a) the tongue design is odd and makes the boot a tad bit uncomfortable until broken in and (b) lacing is a bit of a pain due to the half loops as opposed to full loops for holding the laces while tying. I guess you could say I'm being picky, but I was hoping for a great fitting shoe and feel I got a bit less than that (for a not-so-small price either).

 |  | I can't thank you enough! I have always had a difficult time finding comfortable shoes because I have a very narrow foot. I now have a medical foot issue that has progressed to the point of needing to replace nearly all of my shoes with relatively flat, well-made (translation: expensive) shoes to enable me just to walk without excessive pain. Needless to say, it is difficult to know immediately if a given shoe will both fit my narrow foot and not cause a great deal of pain after an hour of wear. Your free-return policy has been a true blessing to me. It is not easy to spend $170.00 on a pair of shoes that may hurt my feet after an hour and be unwearable if those shoes cannot be returned easily. The specialty shoe store in my area is great, but they offer a limited selection and any special orders can only be returned with a 15% restocking fee. Other online shoe stores require me to pay the return shipping fee and cannot begin to match the customer service that you provide. This can get costly and time consuming when one has the type of issues I have and needs to replace an entire wardrobe of shoes with well-built shoes. I have to say, even if I did not have foot issues, Zappos would be my shoe store for the selection and great customer service alone. Additionally, you offer such quick shipping, the best customer service I have found in as long as I can remember and great selection. I am incredibly happy that I was told about Zappos. You have simplified this part of my life, and believe me, with my foot pain, that is a very large part of my life. I have written other thank you notes to Zappos as well, but I wanted to send a special note of thanks for the quick shipping. I will continue to rave about Zappos to friends and family!
