I am 6'5", 220 lbs and wear a 15 B, but was wanting some trail running shoes and heard these run narrow. My normal running shoes are the B width Asics 2130s. The MMs fit well. They definitely have a narrow heel and roomy toe box like the Asics. Biggest difference from normal shoes is the toe guard which feels odd when you try them on, but is fine to run with. It lifts the toe of the shoe, presumably to keep you from snagging stuff. I ran 7 miles on rocky, rooty terrain out of the box and they were great. I wear Superfeet green insoles, so no comment on arch support.

The Masochist is a relatively lightweight shoe, yet provides fairly good protection even in moderately rocky areas. The Masochist is not as protective for the sides of the feet as heavier Montrails such as the Continental Divide and Hurricane Ridge, but I believe it is more protective to the heel, which is probably more important in sharp rocks. The Masochist, because of its light weight and great heel support, is also a good shoe for hard-packed fire roads and double-track, even rough gravel roads (experienced runners only!). Overall, the traction is as good as any shoe I've used. For me, the Masochist is plenty roomy in the middle of the shoe, but is slightly tighter on the little toes than previous Montrails, which I can accommodate by keeping the strings sufficiently tight. I've been running off-road since the 1960s and, overall, the Masochist is the best shoe for my feet that I've ever run in. I'm currently five weeks into (only) my second heel bruise, which I got running in heavy rocks in a pair of Continental Divides. With this recovering bruise, the Masochist is the only shoe I can run in without pain, which says a lot about the Masochist, given its lightweight design.

Absolutely fabulous. I've been trail running for over 2 years. My normal trails are hilly/mountainy single track with lots of roots, rocks, and all the things that mountain bikers love. For most of that time I used the North Face Arnuva 100TR GTX. Great shoes themselves, but they would wear out and start falling apart pretty quickly. Then I got the Montrails. Wow. Super light, traction is outstanding, mud shedding is great, and rock shielding is excellent. I ran with them for several weeks before running the Vermont Ascutney 50K in Sept 09. The race was a rainy mud-fest. I ran it hard and fast. The shoes performed flawlessly. No blisters or foot damage of any sort. Tread still looks brand new and the rock shielding seems not to have degraded at all. Couldn't have asked for better.

Be wary. These are definitely comfortable and good looking shoes, but unless you are using them just for casual wear they will not hold up. I've only had them for about six weeks and the sole is coming apart (tread is de-laminating). If you're looking for a trail shoe that will last I would not recommend this shoe. I have had much better success with Asics and Salomon shoes.

These sneaks are so comfortable. I bought and use them for trail running, but I would like another pair for messing around in. They are proving to be an excellent trail shoe: no hot spots, good forefoot protection against rocky trails and a fairly low profile. Unfortunately, they appear to be out of my size 12.5 (hint hint).

 | | Dear Zappos, Okay, help me understand something. I place an on-line order last evening at about 8:00. I screw up how to use my store credit and cant figure out how to fix it. I resort to calling your toll free number to fix my stupid mistake and expect to be on hold for at least 20 minutes. Wow is all I can say! A real live person answers the phone in two rings after I debated with myself whether or not to press the option for joke of the day. He corrects my problem and even makes the decision to not charge my credit card for the less than $2 difference between my store credit and the amount due for the running shoes I ordered. On top of this, the shoes were sitting on my doorstep tonight after I came home from work. I even wore them for my evening workout. How dare you do this in less than 20 hours after my mistake! You just set the customer service pole vault bar at 37 feet in my book! Terrific, terrific service. Thank you very much! I now consider myself a customer for life. You all will have to work very hard to make me buy a pair of shoes from another company. Im new to Zappos and you can bet I will be looking to Zappos for other purchases! Many thanks... my next order will be tomorrow evening so I can surprise my wife with a new pair of Berks she wants, but actually needs... it isnt always good to want things! Off to more exploring and shopping on your site... Christmas is coming you know! | | ~ , September 27 2009
