Very lightweight; low-to-the-ground; excellent arch support; a little tight on my high instep; not extremely supportive for competitive volleyball.

Purchased for Son! Sneakers run true to size! My son has a average width foot. Not sure it would work if you needed wider width. Not packed with extra comfort, but feel great. This is the 3rd pair purchased in the past 2 years. Uses them for working out, outside play, and running! Great shoe!

I bought these shoes because I have extremely wide feet. They work pretty good as they are my primary workout shoe. They are a bit tight in the forefoot as I am a EEE and these are rated EE, but they do fit well for working out. Very lightweight with good arch support.

This is a very good shoe for the gym. It is lightweight but offers excellent stability. I wish New Balance would offer it in an even wider size, but overall it has a nice fit.

Very comfortable and lightweight. I bought them as cross-trainers to replace an old pair of 1009's. The 840s look good, but are not garish. They also make you feel more agile than most athletic shoes I've worn. Drawbacks: 1. Much less front and bottom support than the 1009 to decrease weight and to streamline. 2. Less water resistance than the heavier cross-trainers. 3. Very little protection in the toe area. Perhaps a mostly fair weather or indoor shoe. I may still need to get the 1010's for the colder season as I wear sneakers 24/7, or as much as I can.

I was a little nervous about ordering shoes online. I have big feet and finding shoes that fit is always a challenge. I love my New Balance MX840's. They actually fit and didn't hurt or bind anywhere. Also, the Zappos return policy was a no brainer for me! This is the best way to shop for shoes. Thanks Zappos.

From the first moment I tried the shoes one they were very comfortable and true to size. I purchased them specifically for the gym and for Krav Maga training. The width is just right for my wide foot; and the traction seems to be great whatever the surface. On the downside, I had to return the first pair of these I got. One shoe had a lace that was about twice the length of the other; and in less than a month's time or there about, the sole on one shoe began to come unglued. There is no reason for this to happen with the shoes being worn no more than approximately 6 hours per week. The good news is that I was able to return the shoes to Zappos without a hitch. The return process was super easy and went off without any troubles whatsoever. It could not have been a smoother transaction. Now on my second pair, we'll see how they wear overall. So far, so good.

Great shoe for lifting and/or running. I primarily do heavy lifting and these babies feel great on the feet. Very light shoe...I feel like I'm walking on air in these things. No problems squatting, dead lifting, or benching. What else can I say other than I love these shoes! They look great too - I picked up the black ones.

Good for a short run -
The shoes fit well out of the box and are true to size. Wearing them in the gym and walking around, they are very comfortable. However, when I started running in them, after a mile, the arch support became very abrasive and uncomfortable, as if it had moved around. I have run in them a few times since then and every time, after about a mile, they become painful to keep running in. Otherwise a very good shoe for weight training or regular wear.

NB MX840 -
I have just started an exercise program and tried to use my old sneakers in the gym. They were too heavy and just not comfortable. After talking to my trainer she suggested I try a lightweight shoe for my cross training. I have been wearing these MX840s for about three weeks now and I love them, just enough support in a very light and stylish shoe. I will be looking to buy another pair when these wear out.

I bought these shoes for working out in the gym. They feel great. I have to twist my own arm to only wear them at gym time. I want to wear them everywhere.

All Style, No Substance -
Departure from previous New Balance cross trainers, and not in a good way. Center of sole is very narrow and offers little arch support, in the middle of your foot. Quality appears lower than previous New Balance models that I have had. I have always worn size 11 1/2 in New Balance, but had to exchange for a 12 in this model. Zappos service as always was spectacular!
Other brands recommended by reviewer: New Balance's previous designs are better.

I have to agree with the other reviewers. My heels slip out of the shoes. I am not interested in buying heel pads to "make them fit". I tightened the velcro strap in the back and it had little effect on the slippage. I worked in a mid level shoe store for too many years and have bought my share of uncomfortable shoes. If there is one thing I learned from that work experience is: if the shoes slip or pinch or otherwise just don’t feel good from the start - DO NOT buy them. As cute as they are or how cute you might look in them, they are not the shoes for you. Put them back in the box and move on. You feet, your shoe storage closet, and wallet will thank you.

 |  | Didn’t know where to send a note to the full staff so I’m putting it here. I haven’t shopped Zappos for a few years (how many Birkies can one gal wear at a time)! I’ve hunted and hunted for boots. Not much call for tall boots in the Phoenix area, but the styles changed this year so I wanted to get with it. I hate going to stores so I tried the internet, thought I found gold, but ended up returning because they were too loose or too tall or too short. The light bulb went off and I came back to Zappos and they had calf and height measurements listed - what a brilliant idea!!! I found black suede and grey leather and I had them at my front door a day later! How much better could it get: both pairs fit!!! Please post this for all employees so they can know their efforts are very much appreciated... you all could teach the rest of the corporate world how it should be done.
