Classic boot -
Great pair of boots. Soles are soft and spongy, which is great for long periods of standing. Because of the simple design of the pattern used for the boot's leather there is a lack of articulation in the ankle when climbing stairs, but is not uncomfortable. This is a nice light duty boot for walking long patrols or standing post for hours.

These boots are perfect; I will never spend my money on a pair of boots other than Dr. Martens. Also, Zappos customer service was amazing. I ordered on Friday and they were here Monday afternoon.

Not as great as I thought it would be -
I've been breaking these in for awhile, and they're still not SUPER comfortable. They're fine, but then the heels start hurting towards the end of the day. I also had to get a UK 4, even though I generally wear US 7 or 7.5. I probably wouldn't buy them again.

Original that never goes out of style.
I used to wear these back in the 90's. They were comfortable then and still comfortable 18 years later. Classic boots that will never go out of style. Just remember get a size smaller than your usual one. They run kinda big. As for breaking them in...there has been no problem with that. Grab some knee high tube socks and wear them around the house for a few hours for the first few days. Also applying Kiwi saddle soap helps soften the leather. Then you should be ready to wear them around town. Docs only get more comfortable the more you wear them and the older they get. Zappos is a great place to shop online. Their customer service is outstanding. I have been recommending them to everyone!

First of all, I've got to say that Zappos has excellent service. We were upgraded to faster shipping, and we got the shoes within two days!
Anyways, these are my first pair of Dr. Martens, I absolutely love these shoes. They took me almost two weeks to break in. I accidentally wore them to school without an extra pair of shoes before they were completely broken in. My ankles were all red afterward. So, wear layers of socks or extra thick ones.
They feel a little heavier than the average shoe, so it's a bit of an exercise if you aren't used to wearing this kind of thing.
The one thing that I dislike is that the arch support isn't as good as it could be. I had to steal the inserts from my skate shoes to make them more comfortable.

These boots look great but are on the heavy side. I feel as if I am getting a workout in while wearing them! They didn't come with insoles which I found to be a little strange but that was easily taken care of. Overall I am happy with this purchase and I am always happy with Zappos, best website for buying shoes!!!

Again...The best!!
Just ordered this pair for work onboard ship. Darkened the thread and sole but these boots are still hard core! Wore them out to my last concert and again proved that these are so super comfortable and kickin'. Does take a while to break in but TOTALLLY worth it!!

These boots are gorgeous and SO comfortable. The first time I put them on, it felt a little like I was wearing aluminum duct work, but about a week later they were incredibly comfortable. I recommend wearing them around the house, and when expecting to sit a lot (wiggle your feet around; it breaks them in without tearing up your feet). Also, I'm a US Women's 6 but a UK 3. I've rated based on US size.

I bought these boots for the look, but unfortunately it is such a pain to put them on and take them off. Seems like there is something wrong with the design.

So far...
...I like the boots, but having a fairly high arch, I'm now in search of insoles or arch supports of some kind. I'm still in the breaking in period, but it's not bad at all. Squeaking of the leather is driving me mad though. Style...well, if you didn't dig the style you wouldn't be looking at 'em. I think they're the coolest Docs out there.
Zappos has delivery/customer service skills in SPADES! The first pair didn't fit, I called, had 'em email me a return slip and sent then next smaller size immediately. They were here NEXT DAY! Honestly, I don't think I'll buy shoes anywhere else.

Finally I decide to buy Dr. Martens, a friend of mine told me about Zappos and their great customer services and it's true!! I really had a great experience, thanks!! Awesome boots -
My girlfriend and I were in England and she bought the first pair of these about 9 months ago, then I bought mine the week after she got hers. They were terrible to break in at first, but they look, feel and perform amazingly. I like to use Ace bandages on my ankles when breaking in and after awhile I laced my black boots up with my red laces and they look soo cool…must break in and always were best at concerts; if you like to be in mosh pits and that stuff.

I started wearing these back in 1986, now my daughters want their own! These boots never die, never fail, and they are and will always be cool.
PS. You do have to break them in first!

Kick a** boots -
First thing's first. These boots are awesome! I have NEVER had a better pair boots (except perhaps used combat boots, and even that is on very unstable ground. Plus, these look better when broken in). What little cost there is associated with them is WELL worth it. True, as other reviews have said, they are a b**** to break in (mine took at least 8 miles (~13 km) to resemble being broken in. But this is common knowledge, and was not unexpected. One thing which I found helped w/ breaking them in, or rather, minimized the pain, was the liberal use of gauze sheets and medical tape. That, in conjunction w/ good, thick, high quality socks, and you should be able to weather the pain fairly smoothly (yes, there IS pain, but that adds to the emotional attachment when they are finally broken in. Mine are named Klaus und Hans). Now, aside from their near indestructible build, these things look awesome. Especially when they get all beat up and dirty on the outside. they look even better when worn w/ shorts or kilts. (Especially kilts) the bottom line is, GET THESE BOOTS! If ever there was a perfect pair of boots, these are them.

As expected -
I use these boots mainly for work, and in that role they are exceptional. The arch support is quite good and they provide more ankle support than any boot I've ever owned (due, no doubt, to their height and stiffness).
That said, the leather and soles are very stiff and they took about two weeks to break in. Put medical tape on your ankles and wear thick socks and you'll be fine.

Soldier's opinion -
Wore these boots in the Army, as a Cavalry tanker in Desert Storm. I had to snip the heel loop and blacken the yellow stitching but they took the best shine of any other black boot. After six months in the Arabian Desert they still shined up better than most any other boot. I was asked by a general where I got them! After the war I wore them working construction and cooking at night, 12 or more hours a day and then to play as well! I wore them until the sole finally separated, after almost four years of hard service. Soldiers get attached to good boots and I was teary eyed when my tall Docs had to be retired. I still have two other pairs, oxbloods and green suede, and am ordering another pair for work.

I had a little trouble breaking these in, but I have a great tip for anyone breaking in new shoes. You know that bodyglide stuff that athletes use to help protect against chafing? Well, it works wonders on your feet when breaking in new shoes. Anyway, the soles on theses boots are so much more comfortable than any other shoes or boots that I have ever worn. Dead Sexy too.

The BEAUTIFUL Boot!!
Yes, they can be a little painful to break in but it's so worth the pain. This is second pair of Docs I bought from Zappos and I love them as much as the first pair. I tell all my friends about Zappos because they always treat the customers with respect. I got my boots in three days...I will buy all my shoes from Zappos.

These boots are absolutely perfect. I had been coveting them for a long time and was not disappointed when they arrived. I have pretty thick calves and this boot fit around them just fine. Kind of a pain to break in but then I put a double layer of medical tape on the backs of my ankles and was able to stomp around pain free. Straight-up hardcore footgear.

Now when I ordered these I ordered a US men’s 12 size, figuring that since I wear 12/13 for my regular shoes I'd be fine with having it a half size larger. But it looked more than a few inches larger than my foot, but all worries went away when I got them laced up and started walking. My first thoughts, (these are my first pair of boots) UNUSUALLY COMFORTABLE…I have never had footwear that went up to mid calf and I was expecting some getting use to…not at all. Ah, now the break in process that I've heard so much about…But so far in my opinion it is well worth the money

These turned out to be rather nice boots. I have had many pairs of Docs, and these feel as well made. The best part is the lacing eyelets, they are washer backed. So no more broken laces due to the prong eyelets! Fit, finish, and look are great.

Amazing, but an incredible pain to break in -
I have a pair of these in red and I love them. As many have said they take forever to break in and they can be quite painful when they're brand new as the leather is quite stiff (you may want to wear very thick socks at first). Lacing/unlacing can also be a bit time consuming as well, but these two things wind up being huge benefits- these boots will last FOREVER because there is no zipper to break and the leather is so strong. One thing worth noting, though, esp. with the red finish- if you like your boots to look broken in, you may need to help these along. Mine took lots of wear (even in winter!) and several concerts before they even started to lose their shiny new finish. Nothing I thought of could speed up the aging process, which goes to show how tough these things are. Initially they seem expensive, and break-in takes some effort, but trust me, they're well worth it.
* Decoding the "convenient unisex sizing" can be a pain for women, I am a women's size 8 and found that these boots fit me quite well in a 6.
