Lightweight, great ankle support. The first thing I thought when I opened the box was that Zappos must have sent me the wrong size, the boots looked way smaller than I expected. But in fact, they fit perfectly. The Renegade is just somehow magically trimmed down. The boots are certainly incredibly light. They feet almost sneaker-like on the feet, and offer the best kind of ankle support, your stride isn't affected, you can bend forward and backward quite easily, but side bending is supportively constrained from many angles. I was a little worried about how the asphalt/blue would look in real life, but it's pretty subtle and can pass for black on a casual glance. The only problems were: I ordered an EE, I'm pretty sure I got an EE, but the boot feels narrower than EE. It's interesting that the people with narrow feet say the narrow boot is too wide and the people with wide feet say the wide boot is too narrow. Something to keep in mind if your feet are especially wide or narrow. I find that the ball of the foot is not well cushioned and felt pain under the joint of my big toe wearing these after the first mile, at first. While the leather is still stiff, these had a tendency, at least on my foot, to fold sharply and bite into the tops of the feet at the toe joint, across the whole foot. If this has never happened to you before, it probably has something to do with my stride, e.g. I found that the Vasque Sundowners would bite into the top of my big toe at first.

I have an A width foot and typically have to buy shoes as short as possible to get something narrow enough, since most supply a B width for a narrow. I also use an orthotic, which helps some. I buy a US size 12 low top walking shoe so that is what I bought in the Lowa GTX. Fit was perfect for me. I walked 30 miles on concrete/pavement before going on an Alaskan vacation, shoes were perfect from first step. I have now spent a week in Alaska and never wore anything else the whole time. Only went on very short hikes, however. These shoes are very comfortable and very light for a lace up medium height shoe. Not as much cushioning as a casual walking shoe, but much more stable and good on normal hiking terrain in national parks. Enough cushioning for me, and I have back problems so I need as much cushioning as possible without trying to hike in slippery low top walking shoes. I havent checked the weatherproofing, as it has been unusually dry and sunny here most of the time. Overall, very happy that I spent the extra bucks for a narrow width, light, high quality, hiking shoe.

Shoes not narrow -
I have narrow feet. These shoes come in a B width. But they are not B. Thought not a D width like most shoes they are too wide for a B. I would give these shoes a C width. Even so they are excellent shoes. But if you have real narrow feet even the narrow will be too wide.

Ron's Review -
This is a very comfortable, light-weight boot. It has medium arch support and with the insole removed makes an excellent boot to use your custom orthotic in. Wish it was available in brown so that I could own 2 pairs.

Lowa Renegade GTX Mid -
I am using these shoes mostly at my part time job as college security guard. I am in and out of buildings and walk on all kinds of surfaces. I have put about 50 miles on them and have found them to provide good footing in snow and on rubber, granite, plastic, wood... I was concerned that the souls might be too hard, but they absorb shock sufficiently--they are softer than my old Italian made hikers. Must be that cushioning? I am pleased with these. The quality seems such that they should hold up for a few years of hiking and working.

First of all, I only buy boots from Zappos because I can buy my boots based on the shaft and most importantly by the circumference. That said, I was disappointed with the circumference of this boot. I bought this Fitzwell Rosie which says it is a 14" circumference. I also purchased the Fitzwell Lycra which boasts a 14.5" circumference. The problem is that, this 14" is larger (more like a 15" or 16") than the 14.5" which fits snug like I like them. I love this boot, but with long skinny legs and small calves, this is an ill fit and I havent decided whether or not I will keep them. However, they are very classy, timeless looking boots.

Still Evaluating the Boot -
Lightweight, good comfort, excellent traction, substandard arch supports, all in all too early to tell w/o real hiking trial which will come in a few months.

Great Boots -
I have very large feet so finding a size 15 was great. These boots were comfortable from the get-go. I wore them on a 4 mile hike right out of the box.

Hasn't lasted Long -
I took delivery of this pair of boots on Sept 7, 2007 and as of April 2008 they look like they are two years old. The soles seem to be breaking down already and the feel is no longer as comfortable as when they were new.

Not narrow -
This boot was too wide even though it was supposed to be narrow. The arch support was also poor.

Excellent fit, lightweight. Have not taken them hiking yet. Seem best for light to moderate hikes -- 1 day with 25 lbs or less.

Lowas Renegade GTX Mid - Great light weight boot -
The boot is as comfortable as a tennis shoe; light weight, insulated and waterproof below the ankle. Great for light hiking without pack and everyday run around - very durable. This is my third pair. Nice to find narrow options above a size 13.

Not for those with wide feet -
I have had a similar model for years. Great boot, but they were too narrow. After a few years of mild suffering, I decided to get a new pair, this time in EE width. They were still way to narrow! Most EE shoes fit me just fine, so I think it's safe to say that Lowas just runs narrow. Too bad since otherwise they're a great boot -- comfortable, sturdy, and very waterproof. And they look good too.

Good boot but too small -
I have a pair of Nike tennis shoes that are 11.5 narrow, and a pair of Vasque leather hiking boots that are 11.5 narrow, and both fit me fine. But in this boot, although the width is very narrow, 11.5 is too short for my foot. I can just barely feel my toes touching the tip of the boot, and so I can imagine hiking downhill on a rough trail that that slight sensation of touch will become a painfully blunt rubbing.

Yippie Skippie -
O.K. Here's my take on this outstanding boot. I usually wear a size 9 in a dress/casual shoe & a size 9.5-10(narrow) in a running shoe. After reading the comments below, I ordered a size 8.5 (narrow)...PERFECT! Plenty of toe room with a medium weight wool hiking sock & sock liner. I did replace the insole with a berry colored "Superfeet" insole (also available on this site) as I suffer from Plantar Fasciitis. Now, it's the perfect boot.
My first hiking boot, back in 1980 was a Lowa. I've owned many other brands since. My foot has always slid around and I've had to wear multiple pairs of socks & put extra insoles in them to fill up the space due to my Narrow feet, then they would sweat.
I work 8 hours a day on concrete floors PLUS hike around 1500 miles a year (just over 100 miles each month in the Western United States). These boots seem pretty much perfect. Not too light, definitely not to heavy, not too hot & not too stiff but give great support... I may buy a second pair I LOVE THESE BOOTS!

Lowa Renegade GTX Mid - excellent light hiker -
I ordered several boots in several sizes from Zappos in order to have a light to medium hiker for a three-week trip through southwest parks. This Lowa was the winner. I was able to order a narrow width, but had to go to 11-1/2 for enough room wearing SmartWool Hiking socks (I typically wear 10-1/2 or 11). In the local store where I first tried these, the footbed/sole felt too thin. But when other brands/styles weren't working, I went back to the Renegade, and found narrow width at Zappos.
I'm really pleased with these boots: fit is excellent, comfort is very good, weight/balance is outstanding, durability seems outstanding so far, no problems with moisture (external or internal), traction was overall excellent. And I like the way they look too. Not problems with cushion (as I'd initially thought), and I hit some seriously rough terrain.
I wore these without breaking them in on a three-week trip through national parks in the southwest. Some reviews had noted no need, but I would have preferred to wear them a little before heading out. Regardless, I had no problems with blisters, and very little with pressure points.
Trip was varied terrain, day hikes only, some limited (no add'l equip) climbing, from 116 degrees at -282 feet below sea level in Death Valley to mid-30's at 11,000+ in Bryce Canyon and Tioga Pass of Yosemite.
The boots breathed much better than I expected, never feeling too hot or moist. Just the right amount of lateral ankle support for me in these activities. Very light boots.
I'm going to experiment with some other insoles for additional arch support. But that wasn't a real problem on this trip.
When seated and crossing feet at ankles, got the lace hooks locked, and needed to disentangle them a few times.
I will definitely look at Lowa when it comes time to purchase heavier boots! And--as always--Zappos is a pleasure to deal with.

Great Boots X 2 -
This is my second pair. They are lightweight, give great arch and ankle support and require no break in. Great comfort from the first wearing.
They retain size and shape over many days of hard use.

A real pity -
Lowa made a perfect boot with the Renegade--and then they put large metal grommets too close to the toes. When my foot bends, the grommets really HURT.

Warning!
Stay away from these boots if you do any extensive urban trekking! These boots - despite what the Lowa website says about all of their hiking/trekking - can NOT be resoled! I had shelled out the money believing that they could be resoled, when their own authorized cobbler said they could not. I was lucky to get a full winter season out of them before the sole wore away. So if you do a lot of urban trekking save your money and get a cheaper disposable boot like Merrell, which are just as comfortable and water resistant.

Excellent comfort -
I have worn these for 2 weeks as a break-in period and frankly they feel great. It took a couple of days only for this, but they fit so well I have been wearing them all the time. I am heading to AK in June and these shoes will fit the bill. Rugged and comfortable; I chose them over Asolo and Vasque, both with Gore Tex.
Highly recommend this Lowa model.
