I have been using these shoes for three weeks now. The soles are not peeling off (it happened with two previous shoes I bought from Teva and Clarks). They are very comfortable and soft. They are made by New Balance, so they are designed as a running shoe but for everyday use, and that shows in being so soft. I had to order three pairs of the same reference to get to the right size and width. I ended up with shoes extra wide and one size bigger than what I normally use. I never had to buy wide shoes before, but these in normal width were too tight.

Great shoe! Should have went with some of the other reviews & got the wider size. I normally wear a D width in other NB shoes, had to re-order the E width. Of course, with Zappos, no problem getting the shoes fast & no problems with returns.

I wear a size 10 - 2E and I purchased these shoes in a size 10 - 4E. The shoe fits really well because I read several reviews on this shoe before deciding to purchase it. Most reviews tipped me off to ordering a bigger size and width. I took a chance on the length because normally I can get away with a 9 1/2 - 10. If my foot was a solid 10, I would definitely recommend going to 10 1/2 - 11. Glad I took the advice from the reviews.

Now that New Balance stopped making the 575s the replacement 576s are a different 'Last'. I wanted to keep the AL-1 fit & found that the 749s fit exactly like the 575s did. They don't come in White, but the fit is what an AL-1 should be. Thanks.

Great shoes for light hiking, daily work, and everything in between. Comfortable right out of the box. I went ahead a bought a second pair to ensure I had them for years to come. Excellent shoe with plenty of toe room.

Bought these in three sizes for a two week walking trip through Scotland, including castles, hills, cobblestone streets, and military shows. They worked flawlessly, but I had to get them in a size 11 2EE. Normally I am a 10 or 10 1/2 normal width (C), so these were too small and too wide at the listed size. I was wearing them with a liner sock and a lightweight SmartWool style hiking sock. Now I wear them as my normal "work shoe" (I work in a casual office). The color is dead on in the picture, and they feel great even with normal socks, since my feet now have room to breathe as I'm sitting at my desk. When the time comes to get more, I'll probably go for these. I just wish there had been more color options.

I ordered my normal size, and the shoes fit perfectly. Used them on a trip to Iceland, a very good testing ground. Walked on lava fields, on the coast, in very rugged terrain. Stayed warm, comfortable, and secure. Not happy with the shipping, took a long time for me and they were almost late for my departure. This is on Zappos obviously, the shoes were innocent. Recommend them, with the only caveat they MIGHT be a tad warm for summer treks. I wouldn't know, Iceland doesn't lend itself to hot weather tests, so mine is only a suspect.

I want to thank all the reviewers of this shoe for tipping me off to order the next size bigger and wider. The shoes fit perfect and look great. Zappos upgraded the free shipping to overnight, so I received the shoes in less than 24 hours. Can't beat the combination of New Balance and Zappos.

I like the shoe. I am a teacher and am on my feet all day, and my feet don\'t hurt at the end of the day. I took the advice of other people and ordered a size wider than normal. I am glad that I did because they fit just fine. Zappos sent them overnight. Overall, a great shoe and great customer service. I would definitely order from Zappos again.

Not an easy shoe size to find (New Balance walking shoe, 15 4W), but Zappos had it in stock, and it was delivered overnight by UPS. Incredible service that I have yet to find from a traditional brick-and-mortar shoe store.

I have been happily impressed with the promptitude and courtesy of Zappos in processing my shoe order.I especially appreciated the advice posted by another customer to go a width larger than I would normally order. This proved excellent counsel, and the shoes fit perfectly. Expedited shipping at no extra charge was an unexpected plus, as I had my order in less than 24 hours. Still don\'t know how they did that!

Runs a lot smaller than the MW747 -
I ordered a half size larger based on comments about this shoe running small. They weren't kidding, these shoes run very small. I have an older pair of MW747 in size 10 4E that are a bit too big, but the MW794 in 10.5 2E runs very small. I have no idea what size and width to try. What happened to New Balance? They used to run true to size, but I'm finding their current sizing is all over the map.

I was looking for a sturdy work/hiking shoe with the lightness and support of a running shoe. The 749 is a good middle ground, very comfortable, durable, and light. In my case the shoes run narrower than advertised but not longer. I normally wear a narrow 9.5, tried a few variations, and ended up buying the 9.5 Wide (2E) which feels right. I tried the Lowa Renegade at twice the price, but did not like it as much.

I have comfortably worn many different New Balance shoes in a D width, but this one is really cut narrow. I returned the D for a 2EE and found that the 2EE was only 1/16 of inch wider! I measured the 2EE against my older D width New Balance shoes and this 2EE was still 3/16 narrower than a normal D. If I go up to a 4EE it would probably still be narrower than what a normal D width shoe should be. I am disappointed with New Balance for marking these shoes so incorrectly. If you get a width that fits you, you should like the shoe itself which is very nice.

I bought these shoes for my husband--he had a pair of the previous year's style and if he could, he would have bought enough pairs of those to last him the rest of his life. He wore those shoes down to holey soles before he'd agree to try these. He wasn't sure he'd like this style--they are different, after all--but graciously (!) allowed me to order them for him to try. Well, he LOVES them. He's complained about other shoes squeezing his toes, but these are roomy enough and supportive enough to satisfy him completely. There was no break-in time; there are no pressure spots, no flaws in the materials or stitching. The suede part stands up well to wear and doesn't need special care; the fabric parts are also durable and wear well. The lacing works just fine, the tongue is well-padded and comfortable for him. Of course, I had to pull all of this out of him--if he were writing this, he'd just tell you the shoes are "perfectly fine".

This recent addition to the New Balance walking/hiking shoe is at least as good as their previous version. I did have to send my first order back because the shoes fit one size too small. This may not be their fault as I seem to fit between sizes in many brands, but if you tend to one size or the next I'd recommend going with the larger. Overall a great shoe!

AWESOME PAIR OF SHOES -
I've been reading several of the reviews and either they're way off or I am. I've always been very hard to fit, but these are great, and I waited several months after purchase before writing this so I could see just how they would hold up. I've not had one problem. I put extra water resistant spray on them and wore them in the snow, walked through puddles, got them real wet with water from the hose, and nothing has ever come through. Plus they dry real fast. The fit is great, no up or down, wide or narrow, just fine. I wear a women's 10 and I ordered a men's 9. I wear them every day to work, and now have been wearing them to the gym each day to walk on the treadmill. They are one of the best shoes I've ever purchased and I will purchase again real soon. Very durable.

I took advice from previous purchasers and went up one half size in length and one letter in width from my normal size and I'm glad that I did. These New Balance MW749 fit fine.

Great looking shoe but odd fit -
This shoe looks great - not too casual, not too professional. However, as another reviewer pointed out, these shoes are EXTREMELY narrow in the front and way too wide in the back. The shoe literally pinched the front of my foot, cutting off circulation, while my heel would slide up and down in the back of the shoe while walking. This shoe looks great, but has a very odd shape for my size 11, medium width foot.

As usual the shoes came really fast. I have wide (EEEE) feet and I always buy New Balance because they are the perfect fit for me. Once again, after a few minutes of wearing them, they felt like they were custom made. Not an ounce of discomfort. I wish they could come up with some in a more natural look with an oil tan finish. Their design team would do good to go look at the Keens and other high end shoes that are also soft and natural. In the mean time I'll keep buying NB. I wear them for work, play, and casual wear.

NB is the only brand that fits me, their shoes are always comfortable but unfortunately in this particular model the heel rips off and the leather destroys the soxs, and then you either buy new soxs every day or throw away the shoes, you judge!

These are very comfortable shoes for walking and hiking. I put hundreds of miles on them and got no blisters or anything like that. My only qualm with them is the front rubber toe section starts to come unglued and let water and dirt inside the shoe. This also happened with my last pair of New Balances which were very similar to this pair.

First, I'd like to echo reviews of others. This shoe is NARROW and a little short. I generally wear an 8 EE. I tried 3 different fits before I found the right one. Size 8.5 4E worked for me. I wore an MW575 before this with an SL-1 last and they always felt perfect. This shoe fit "ok" once I found the right size, but I wished the toe box were a little bigger. I felt as if I was walking on the inside of my feet. Instead of hitting the ground with the outside of my heel I'd strike it with the middle and roll through the arch. I needed a new inner sole before this shoe felt really good. With the new insert, these feel fine. I absolutely love the style. That's the only reason I spent the time with these to get them to fit right. I couldn't find anything else on the market that had the look I wanted. I feel comfortable wearing these to the office with khakis or in shorts during the summer. Kudos to New Balance for offering such a wide variety of sizes. I couldn't find anything similar in a wide width from any other brand.
