Great jacket for a decent price! I'd been in the market for a lightweight, breathable but waterproof, parka length rain jacket for a while now, and was thrilled with Zappos selection. I ordered the Sierra Designs Cyclone Parka and The North Face Venture Parka (which cost quite a bit more) to compare. I ended up keeping the Cyclone and couldn't be happier! Lucky for me it came just in time for Hurricane Ike, so I've had an extraordinary chance to test it. The first thing I loved about the Sierra Designs Cyclone was the fit and look. Its slender and flattering, not bulky at all. I am 5'6" 110 lbs., but have a bust, and I ordered a S. I think an XS would have been too tight in the shoulders and bust. If I was wanting to layer under the jacket with a fleece I would have maybe gone with a M, but since I live in hot and humid Louisiana, layering isn't necessary. I originally ordered the cocoa color, which was a nice red/brown, but very shiny. I exchanged it for the black, which is not shiny. The Cyclone is a true parka length jacket, and covers my butt. This longer length was one of the major deciding factors for me, since the North Face "Parka" hit me only at the hip bone. The Cyclone features a 2-way zipper that was a little tricky the first few zips but has now gotten much easier.
It is very thin, lightweight, and breathable, which is exactly what I was looking for. I was afraid that "breathable" would mean "not quite waterproof," but this isn't the case with the Cyclone. It is very waterproof, and kept me completely dry while I braved the pouring rain and gusty winds of Hurricane Ike. Even when the jacket was soaked, water didn't seep through, and it dried very quickly. Rather than "pit zips" the Cyclone has "extremity zips" that run from the mid-bicep to mid-forearm. I thought this was a little odd, but so far they seem effective at providing a little extra airflow. There are 2 external zipper pockets and 3 internal pockets (1 of which is a zipper pocket) however the Cyclone does not have any pockets up on your chest, which was a bummer when I needed a dry place to put my cell phone while wading in thigh-deep flood water. Another major plus for me was that the Cyclone has a separate zip-up collar with an attached hood. The only downside that I have found is that the hood seems a little short (compared to the North Face Venture Parka especially) and doesn't completely cover my forehead and eyes (it should be noted that I have a very small head). Also, the hood does not want to stay on, especially when the wind picks up, and using the cinch chords only seems to pull the neck of the jacket up towards your face instead of adjusting the hood. This does seem like a pretty big flaw for a rain jacket, and I noticed on Sierra Designs site that the newest version of this jacket now features a hood with a bill and a different cinching system. However, I like to wear a baseball cap under my hood, so the short hood of the Cyclone hasn't been a problem for me personally. I am even considering making my own bill out of flexible plastic covered with nylon and sewing it to the hood, but that's only if I'm feeling especially crafty one day. All in all this is a great jacket for the price, and I highly recommend it. After all, it has been hurricane tested (not officially, just by me)! Now I'm thinking about ordering the Cyclone rain pants too!
