This shoe is WELL made, but with a design FLAW. It holds together, and is comfortable right out of the box. The elastic forefoot material makes for a secure foot for trail-running. The sole does not pick up gravel or hold mud, and the tread is very grippy on wet rock and in gravel and sand. It is built on a curved last which is especially good for those with a neutral or high arched foot. Kind of odd to use that attribute in a so-called anti-pronation shoe.\r\n\r\nNow to the problem, and it is severe. People have said they like the so called pronation control. I seriously doubt anyone saying that uses the shoe on trails. The inside of the heel is made of hard rubber which has very little give. It will resist pronation. The outside area of the heel is made of a much softer rubber, and this is a fatal flaw. The outside of the heel could just as well be hard like the inner side. With the outer area being softer, IF you land on a slanted surface, a slanted rock for example, the shoe collapses to the outside, rolling your ankle. On the trail, this shoe is a sprained ankle waiting to happen. A-symmetrical cushioning is probably a bad idea in any shoe, but it is absolutely disastrous in a trail shoe. Dual density heels are a design gimmick. Safer and supportive for pronators would be simply (symmetrical) stability.\r\n\r\nThis shoe has heel elevation. I find this a useful trait running UP steep hills (and a liability running down). I used that to good effect doing the Pikes Peak Ascent which is ALL UP hill. Running up hill at high altitude, the ankle rolling issue is not a large risk because one is running so slowly. I would NEVER run DOWN hill in this shoe!

These shoes are a good fit. I like the dual density on the medial side. They have a nice aggressive outer sole. The base of the shoe is too narrow for any serious trail or mountain running. It's really easy to drop the ankle, which is never fun. This is a good shoe for dirt roads but I would not buy it again. It's also a bit pricey.

These shoes look great and feel better. Im in love with them. The heel is a little taller and narrower than I was used to, but the soles are soft and forgiving, especially around the edges, so Im not concerned about rolling my ankles. My only caution when buying them is your intended use. They are definitely NOT meant for pavement or other hard, abrasive surfaces. After a mere 25 miles running and walking on the sidewalk in mine, there was already substantial wear on the treads. Now I use them only for grass or rugged trails and they seem fine.

Im spoiled, I love the lightness of this shoe, but you need a sock; great light trail shoe. Comfort one star down because you blister at the toe base if you go sockless.

Overpronator's dream!
As an overpronator I spent several frustrating years with other well known brands before I bought a pair of Speedcross 2 a year ago and couldn't believe the difference. From the moment I tried them on the comfort was in a different league to other trail runners I had used, and the first time I ran in them it was clear that the increased comfort and support also translated into improved performance - the PB times on my regular runs all improved significantly, presumably because my footfall and running style was altered in a positive way. The support for pronators is excellent and the tight fit adds to the overall level of support. The sole is ideally suited to rough trails and off-trail running, and the grip is excellent both on wet rock and boggy peat. Uphill and downhill performance is superb. I have also used them for road running even though the sole is slightly unconventional for this purpose! In extremely hot weather I have found the need to change socks on very long runs (20k+) due to perspiration but this is the only criticism I could make and only applies in exceptionally hot weather conditions. I have just bought a second pair - not because the first pair is worn out but because I wanted to stock up before Salomon 'improves' them.

Great shoes for trail/hike -
I run trails or hike up longer trails. These shoes are like feather on your feet. May not recommend it for casual use, but if you're heading out for a day or two, this is all you'll need.

A ninja could not ask for a better shoe!
Ok, if your idea of trail running is on maintained trails, then this is not the shoe for you. Salomon makes many shoes for this kinda running. This shoe will give you the kind of grip you will need for flying down switchbacks with boulders and rocks as you go. Get your size if you don't want the shoe ripped from your foot. It is made to fit snug so you don't lose it! As you run up trails, the shoe yells at you, "Faster! making you feel like less of a man and out of shape. As you fly down trails at high speeds, eyes tearing up from the wind, using all your senses to keep you from tripping off the next switchback, and in a quick moment of airborne silence the shoes whisper
faster...

Bought 2 Pairs -
After trying numerous styles and brands, I bought a second pair. These shoes might be the most comfortable pair of shoes I've owned to date. They accommodate an orthotic, a must for me. Perform very well on trails and on the job (concrete floors) for long periods of time. Have held-up quite well 1 year into owning them. Quite satisfied.

Best shoe in years -
Good looking, true to size, great support for all day comfort, sturdy well made shoe for my 5 mile daily beach sand powerwalk. The salt in the sand eats away metal eyelets of other shoes.

Great shoe, but not optimal for hot weather runs -
Agree with many excellent reviews. Best for moderate to cool weather. For a hot humid run (10K+), they may trap sweat and moisture, in part due to the heavily padded tongue. Under those conditions stick with Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra or more breathable trail shoes. Lovely fit on the Speed Cross 2, but tighter toes than XA Pro.

Finally, a great trail shoe - I felt like I could run twice as far during my first run with these shoes. They are great for pronation support, traction control (on dirt/mud), and extremely light for a trail shoe. The external build of the shoe protects your feet from smashing against rocks or logs. Be extra careful if you run over rocks and logs on your runs!

Judge a book by the inside.
Shoes look great, very durable, versatile, and grips the trail better than any shoe I've tried. However; after running a mile or so I felt several pressure points inside the shoe that eventually rubbed some of the worst sores I've ever had. The stitching is not blended very well on the inside. Be fore warned.

This shoe is great. It feels phenomenal and is easy to get on and off. I thought the bottom tread would wear off real fast, but so far I havent seen even the slightest of problems. Great buy for the money. Worth it!

Great shoe -
After a lifetime of wearing Nikes, Adidas, New Balance, and Asics, I decided to give Salomon a try. I have to say that they are simply magnificent. This is my second pair of Salomons and at this point I can't imagine going back. Great styling, well-made, and while I initially had reservations about the tying system, it really works well. These shoes are light and nimble with good support. Highly recommend.

The best trail shoe out there! Extremely light too. My last pair of shoes was Salomons so I knew this would be a good product. I had high expectations and was still impressed when I received them.

Best Trail Shoes -
These shoes are incredible. I have trained in the gym for 3 weeks logging at least 20 miles a week on the tread mill and my feet feel great! The pronation support is awesome. After 10 miles or so, my shoes tend to pronate but these shoes have held up! On the trail, they handle like your driving a sports car on a winding road! Comfort and support while being ultra light-weight.

GO VERTICAL with this GREAT CLIMBER -
Spiderman must wear these babies because you can literally climb a wall. Grip is EXCELLENT! Trail walkers or runners won't be disappointed with the stability either. Not good for flat or paved surfaces due to the tread - but that's what makes these the best hiking shoe EVER!

Keep it on the trail -
Just purchased these after having had some success with their GoreTex cousins. The fit is Salomon narrow. I believe it is meant to be a bit nimbler and feels lacking in support at the heel and ankle.
While not completely waterproof it is good for most trails other than complete bogs!
Great grip, though i see wear on the tread even though I only run a few blocks enroute to chip/dirt trails.

Fantastic -
The Salomon Speedcross 2 is all that the magazine reviews claimed it to be. It is extremely cushioned and comfortable, the tread grips well without holding mud, it fits like a cushioned road shoe but performs like a serious trail beast. And it looks great! This shoe is no clunky trail shoe that sacrifices speed. I ran a 50-miler with only a few wears beforehand and no blisters or foot problems. The only negative, if this is actually negative, is that it seems to run about a quarter size too small. I wear a 9.5 in just about all running shoes, and the 9.5 in the Salomon feels good, but there is just a touch of the feeling of "I wish I had just a bit more toe box." I recommend going up the half size. Overall, fantastic. And Zappos price is good, especially with free overnight shipping.

Ferraris for your feet -
I love this shoe. First hike out with them I felt like I could run up, down, backwards, the light weight and perfect fit (ordered a 1/2 size larger than normal) are simply outstanding.
Second hike with the shoes I got a bit overzealous and tried a sharp downhill cut while mid-sprint across some rocks...the edge of the shoe caught a little too well, ankle rolled, category three ankle sprain...yeeouch!
Break them in and get used to them. This is a phenomenal shoe but I learned a hard lesson that you need to get a feel for how they react before you press the gas and go.
