I don't understand why people with knee problems have recommended this boot. I have knee (and hip and back and foot) problems and I had to return mine after trying them. Yes, it's a wonderfully comfortable boot. The problem? The Vibram sole at the heel is squared to the ground, meaning with every step you take--unless you walk on your toes or only walk uphill--the boot hits the ground, then snaps forward, putting a lot of stress on your joints and making you land hard and flat-footed. My whole body is sore from trying these boots out. I'm terribly disappointed. I actually considered shaving off an angle on the heel, but didn't know if that would ruin the sole. The toe is too narrow, too, leaving no room to move the toes.

Update -
I just wanted to give an update with regard to these extremely comfortable boots. At first glance one would think they are stiff and would need to be broken-in to be comfortable especially as everyday winter footwear which is what I have worn them for. I find that after I put them on I tend to forget I even have them on and for me that's a good thing with my bad knees. They certainly feel as sturdy as when new and I have found that even with now over 90 pairs of boots I reach for them more times then I normally should ( I'm a collector ). I try to wear all my boots at least once during the winter but I have worn these probably 5 times since I got them. I can even see wearing them some in the warmer months here in Ohio. You might not like the color combo but I bet you'll like the fit!

Comfortable as they are colorful -
I was pleasantly surprised when I took these boots out of the box and put them on. They were just right as far as fit, especially when I removed the original insoles and replaced them w/ my favorite New Balance Pressure Relief Performance insoles w/ an extra deep heel cup. The insoles have Poron material which I have found to be the most comfortable insole for me. They make these boots feel like "slippers". I wear size 13 1/2-14 and have a narrow/medium foot so I ordered 14s and even though the insoles I use take up some space , the boots still fit perfect w/ medium Merino wool socks. (I am not saying this for any other reason than to lend validity to what I have said, but) I currently own 83 pairs of Hiking/Trekking boots and even though I now have Bilateral Osteo Arthritis of the knees and can't hike , these boots make great everyday footwear especially in Winter. The mid-sole really isn't all that rigid so you can walk in them w/ relative ease.

Best for the money -
I love this shoe! It worked very well for all mountaineering, hiking, backpacking... with enough support for some moderate ice-climbing. I climbed Mt. Whitney in it in both summer and winter and it never let me down, although my feet got cold after all day in snow and freezing temperatures, but that's not what this boot is made for anyway. It needed one full-day trip to break in, otherwise bad blisters... GTX, Vibram Nepal... awesome for the money!

Great boot -
Great boot! I ordered the Asolo Expert, the La Sportiva Trango S, the Lowa Ceveta, all in 11.5 or 44.5 euro, and the Asolo is the widest boot. The Garmont, La Sportiva, and Lowa are all the same width, which I think I have a narrow/medium foot. The Garmont felt the shortest, as my toes were touching the end of the boot in only this brand, the others being all the same length. This is a great boot. All except the La Sportiva made in Romania, all look suspiciously alike, probably made in the same factory.

Garmont Tower GTX -
It's got the European look to it but without the narrow fit. So far, I'm very happy with the comfort and fit. Break-in has been very easy since it was nice and comfy straight out of the box. Zappos delivery and service rocks!

 | | I can't thank you enough! I have always had a difficult time finding comfortable shoes because I have a very narrow foot. I now have a medical foot issue that has progressed to the point of needing to replace nearly all of my shoes with relatively flat, well-made (translation: expensive) shoes to enable me just to walk without excessive pain. Needless to say, it is difficult to know immediately if a given shoe will both fit my narrow foot and not cause a great deal of pain after an hour of wear. Your free-return policy has been a true blessing to me. It is not easy to spend $170.00 on a pair of shoes that may hurt my feet after an hour and be unwearable if those shoes cannot be returned easily. The specialty shoe store in my area is great, but they offer a limited selection and any special orders can only be returned with a 15% restocking fee. Other online shoe stores require me to pay the return shipping fee and cannot begin to match the customer service that you provide. This can get costly and time consuming when one has the type of issues I have and needs to replace an entire wardrobe of shoes with well-built shoes. I have to say, even if I did not have foot issues, Zappos would be my shoe store for the selection and great customer service alone. Additionally, you offer such quick shipping, the best customer service I have found in as long as I can remember and great selection. I am incredibly happy that I was told about Zappos. You have simplified this part of my life, and believe me, with my foot pain, that is a very large part of my life. I have written other thank you notes to Zappos as well, but I wanted to send a special note of thanks for the quick shipping. I will continue to rave about Zappos to friends and family! Thanks again, Barb D. | | ~ Barb D., September 28 2009
