Revised review of St Moritz altimeter watch -
My husband loved this watch since it was analog, not digital, and he wanted the altimeter. It is a beautiful watch but it died after 8 or so months. (Took to a jeweler to replace the battery, but they did not want to open it up, which would break the watertight seal and possibly void the warranty). We were very fortunate that ZAPPOS replaced the watch, even though we couldn't find the original box, but then that one also died within a few weeks! My husband thinks the reason may be that this watch is just not meant for hiking and can't take the sweat. For this pretty big price tag, it is a gorgeous watch with an Italian leather band and beautiful face but may be better suited for an everyday or even dress watch, where you don't really need the altimeter anyway. We returned it to Zappos for full credit and bought an altimeter watch that is more sport oriented and water resistant, and yes, we had to go digital. I would continue to recommend this watch but not for wearing on hiking trips. For those who aren't familiar with altimeters, there will always be some lack of precision as the function is determined by air pressure. Instead, we bought a High Gear Altis watch that cost much less (which we used to by a satellite personal tracker), which is very attractive and has lots of nifty functions. If you have to have an analog watch, go with the St. Moritz Topograph, but for my husband's preferences, the digital was the only way to go. I will report back in a few months to follow up if the new watch doesn't work out...
Other brands recommended by reviewer: Highgear Altis Multifunction; Suunto Core or Observer; Casio Pathfinder Triple Sensor or Waveceptor.

My husband loves this altimeter watch.
My husband is an avid hiker and an annual backpacker. He is not a GPS type of person. He'd rather read a map. Seeing this watch (good ol' analog, not digital!) with the altimeter got me to buy it at once as a surprise for his Mt. Whitney trek! It is a bit complicated to use, at least for me to understand, but for a numbers and gauge person, once you learn how it works, you'd be fine. You have to like analog watches as the dials are similar to read altitude. When hubby returns I will report in again, but prior to leaving, he experimented with it a bit. He says it is not absolutely accurate, but it does give a good idea how much altitude you have gained on a given day or time, which is mainly what he was interested in.
