The Hardrock offers the most protection, stability, and traction of any of the Velocity models. Named after the Hardrock 100 in southwestern Colorado, it is designed for running over rough, rocky terrain. However, unlike previous attempts to achieve this level of protection and stability, the Hardrock is agile, flexible, and light, which makes it versatile for everything from short and fast running, to long, hard hiking.
The key to these qualities is in the platform design. The midsole base is a little wider with a molded protection plate. The plate design is sculpted to allow maximum forward flexibility in a way that also enhances the underfoot protection. The midsole features a metatarsal gel pad for additional forefoot cushioning and a higher-density medial post for pronation control. The upper is very supportive due to the multiple webbing strips and synthetic overlays. But since the shape is carefully sculpted to the IntegraFit™ last, it feels almost molded for your foot.
Gel in the forefoot provides extra cushion without sacrificing performance.
Aggressively lugged Gryptonite™ GT rubber outsole for dirt and mud traction.
External heel cap for extra stability.
Protective embossing for abrasion protection.
Full-length TerraFlex AR protection plate is designed for forefoot flexibility and maximum torsional rigidity.
Dual-density Elon EVA midsole.
Shoe weighs 13 oz. (0.37 kg).

Hubby loves these! I believe my husband has had 3 pairs of these shoes. He is hard on shoes, but these stand up better than anything else. They provide amazing support AND fit his orthotics. His pedorthist recommended them. Since hubby started combining these with his orthotics, his knees have healed to the point where he rarely - if ever - needs his knee braces!

My 3rd pair since early 2004 - I love these shoes and am now on my third pair. I walk a lot so the tread gets significantly worn in about a year's time, but I wear them about 350 days a year. They are so comfortable and provide great support. I'd almost consider buying a new pair to horde them away for next year, but I can't afford it and I'm confident that these shoes will still be available. Great for everyday walking or hiking. They have great tread and feel comfortable like a lightweight sneaker. Highly recommended. I originally bought them because they were made with all synthetic materials, but I honestly never had such great sneakers. I don't really have defined arches but I never feel pain from long periods on my feet like I normally would in other shoes.

Other shoes recommended by reviewer: I've had really great experience with other montrails.

If it wasn't broken, why fix it? This is my fourth pair of Montrail Hardrock. In the past, not only was a great trail runner, it required no breaking in- you could wear it right out of the box. Not any more. I just took a new pair to Thailand and after a 8 mile jungle hike, had a nasty blister on my Achilles heel which pretty much ruined the rest of my trip. When I got home, I compared it to my previous pair of Hardrocks and found the problem- they moved that hard plastic band on the back heel (that has the word Montrail printed on it) up a full inch. So instead of supporting the heel, it now cuts deep into it. I have no idea why Montrail would make such a change. It was the perfect shoe, now it's a torture device. Also, I still don't understand why Montrail doesn't do proper sizing-- I had to order 3 pair from Zappos before I realized that the shoe is a full size smaller than marked.

Great shoe overall. Training for 100 miler and putting 50 miles a week base building I finally ran across, pardon the pun, a shoe that has it all or at least as much as it can. The give and take in the shoe world is a tough one but at the end of the day this shoe, for me, is the best. While a bit heavy initially it can only make you stronger and you quickly get past the boxy feel and don't even notice it. The shoe is a bit stiff but when you need the support the stiffness pays huge dividends on the long trail. Your foot is snug as a bug and is extremely well protected. The tread grips the trail nicely and you're not carrying it around with you, meaning the trail doesn't stick to the bottom of your shoe. The shoes run small as I had to send the size 9 back to get a 9.5 and eventually receive a size 10, my first ever and these are a little snug. The laces need to be a bit longer, I removed them and added speed laces. I've tried many different shoes and this Montrail Hardrock works for me the best.

Ouch! I bought these for trail running and man...they tore up my right ankle! The shoes are heavy and clunky, and the material in the ankle area feels like it's made out of a cheese grater! Ouch!! The cushioning was seriously lacking, my feet hurt after 3 miles and even the skimpiest road shoes never gave me any troubles on the most technical of trails. I will say this: Excellent toe protection for rocks. Use this as a hiking shoe, not a trail runner.

This is the premier trail ultra marathon shoe. I have run 20 trail 100-milers, eight in the Hardrock (the other 12 antedated the shoe). This shoe gives the protection and support needed in long distance events. For shorter runs (50 miles or less) you might be able to go with one of the "light" or "racing" trail shoes, but not in the 100K or 100 mile range. Adding to its support and protection it does very well on technical (slippery) descents. This is the premier trail ultra marathon shoe.

Best shoes ever, man. What an awesome shoe. I saw a pair of them at a shoe store here in Austin. I asked the sales guy about them, and he said I should try on a half-size larger than what I normally wear. They didn't carry a 12 1/2, so I came to Zappos. Got the size and the color I was looking for, and I swear they were on my doorstep the following morning. The Montrails are the best. I definitely recommend you pick some up.

Montrail Hardrock - This shoe is a great lightweight hiker and trail running shoe. For a trail running shoe it is heavy so it works best on rough trails. As a hiking shoe, it is lightweight and nimble with a tough sole.

Montrail Hardrock - This is my third pair of Hardrocks and they're an incredibly well-made shoe. These babies will take care of your feet. I even use them for moderate trail hiking in Colorado (trails just under the level of the easiest 14ers). They provide great cushioning and stability with the absolute minimum amount of shoe on your foot. I have also found them to be extremely durable -- they take a long time to break down. Afterwards they take on a second life as a nice casual street shoe or shoes you can wear on the stair climber all winter.

Other shoes recommended by reviewer: Best trail runner out there.

ZUMA SAYS - Very nice shoe! Fit seems maybe a bit snug, but being summer my dogs swell up a little, go a 1/2 size larger and you will be golden. Nice grip and feel off road, though I haven't put a hundred miles on yet! Shoe looks way nice! Wish it felt as good. Comfort still a solid 4.

My review of the Montrail Hardrock - Upon trying on my new Hardrocks I found them very comfortable. They were a little heavy for the shoes I had been wearing, but for the protection they provided they were lighter than expected. The cushioning was not adequate for me, so I took out the inserts and added my own. The shoes provided great protection when running over rocks on the trail. I wouldn't recommend them for running a PR in a race, but they would work well on a fast thru hike on a rocky trail.

Just what I've been looking for! This is a great shoe! Excellent comfort and support. I'm on my feet a lot and spend a good deal of time on the trail. These have proven to be great for work or play. After a day or two of break-in time, these are the only shoes I'll allow on my feet. I also have a pair of hiking boots from Montrail and must say this company has me hooked.

Nice - These were my first pair of trail shoes for a trip to Honduras and they worked great and after numerous miles of running and a backpacking trip they’re still comfortable. One con is that the tread chunked off the first few days and it not that great on cobble stone roads or any hard slick surface that’s wet, but its a very comfortable shoe and look forward to another pair.

Montrail Hardrock - Have worn these shoes almost every day for the last year, including 15 k mountain runs. They show very little wear at all, except the soles are naturally a little thinner, now. They are the most durable and comfortable trail/running shoe I have owned. I'm very pleased with them as most of the other reviewers are. Get a pair and go running.

Poor sole quality - I picked these shoes up for light, fast hike on the JMT. Found them to have the same comfort and feel as previous Montrail products but the soles wore down ridiculously fast. Now with about 120 miles on them they are just about shot and lacking grip. Wouldn't recommend them for anything too hardcore...oddly, they're named after the Hardrock 100.

Montrail fan - I ran a 50k with these right out of the box. They were stiff at first and thought it might be a mistake to break them in this way. But after all the mud and water, they feel just fine now. Good traction and water drainage. I bought the Highlander and they are great right out of the box!

Absolutely Fantastic!!! Second Pair, 1st lasted forever!!! You really can't go wrong with these shoes, just get them in the correct size and off you go! Hiking, strolling, ultimate Frisbee, gardening, biking, what ever, they are awesome, buy them!!! Oh, yes it does take a little bit to break them in, but at least they don't turn to mush like so many thin skinned hiking shoes.

Best Trail Shoes I have owned - I have been looking for a trail shoe that provides maximum support and protection from pointy rocks, but still doesn't feel like you are wearing combat boots. This is the shoe. The second time I ran in them, I ran 30 miles on a mix of road and trails and the shoes felt great the whole time. They still feel best on trails versus the road, though.

Sleeping Monster - First-off another satisfying transaction with Zappos! This time i was focused on tread alone. I need teeth for trails and rock edges that don't 'swallow' mud. This tread pattern is ideal! Weighed this shoe against Puma Complete Trailfox...but it 'swallows'. I went with the red/grey color and it looks much better than traditional Hardrock dark grey/blue. Most stable shoe i've worn; looks like a Vans but runs like an Asics and sticks to mud like a Vasque boot. Heel cup keeps my foot in place. Breathability is superb (you can see through the mesh when held up to light); but expect water to come right through.

Other shoes recommended by reviewer: Puma Trailfox for loooks!
