The Hardrock offers the most protection, stability, and traction of any of the Velocity models. Named after the Hardrock 100 in southwestern Colorado, it is designed for running over rough, rocky terrain. However, unlike previous attempts to achieve this level of protection and stability, the Hardrock is agile, flexible, and light, which makes it versatile for everything from short and fast running, to long, hard hiking.
The key to these qualities is in the platform design. The midsole base is a little wider with a molded protection plate. The plate design is sculpted to allow maximum forward flexibility in a way that also enhances the underfoot protection. The midsole features a metatarsal gel pad for additional forefoot cushioning and a higher-density medial post for pronation control. The upper is very supportive due to the multiple webbing strips and synthetic overlays. But since the shape is carefully sculpted to the IntegraFit™ last, it feels almost molded for your foot.
Gel in the forefoot provides extra cushion without sacrificing performance.
Aggressively lugged outsole for dirt and mud traction.
External heel cap for extra stability.
Protective embossing for abrasion protection.
Full-length TerraFlex AR protection plate is designed for forefoot flexibility and maximum torsional rigidity.
Dual-density Elon EVA midsole.
FasTrax carbon rubber outsole.
Shoe weighs 11 oz.

Bad fit - I have a wide foot to start with. The last of this shoe is curved inward, which is great for certain foot types, but not mine. I felt like my 4th and 5th toes were smashing into the end of the shoe on the outside and actually they did go numb when I worked out at home to test them out. They went back.

Montrail Hardrock is a winner - These shoes, hands down, give me more walking support than any others I've tried (and, believe me, I've sampled most of them). They are comfortable to the point that I don't realize I'm wearing shoes, and because I have bunions that's unusual for me. I severely sprained an ankle in early June, and these shoes are the best possible prescription for healing. I'm a fan for live.

Great trail running shoe - My new favorite trail shoe! Great arch support and lots of stability around the arch and heel, yet the forefoot is still flexible enough to maintain good "foot feel". I've used them on several trail runs now, and they are fantastic. Order a 1/2 size up - I normally wear size 8W, and the 8.5W were a perfect fit.

Good from the first wearing - This shoe is rugged but not too heavy and was comfortable from the first wearing. I did switch to official "boots" when faced with a lot of mud, though; as they are essentially sneakers and I needed something a bit more protective the first night of my camping trip. But when things dried they were great for dirt and rocks. DEFINITELY order a half size up -- I'm an exact size 7 wide in almost all footwear, and using the reviews I went for a 7 1/2 which fit just right.

Good trail running shoe for over pronators - I've tried numerous trail running shoes from various makers and Montrail makes the best shoe for over pronators who need lots of stability. Sole is sturdy and stable and thick enough that you don't feel the rocks on the trails. While lesser quality shoes can probably be worn for hiking, these Hardrocks are perfect for people who actually run the trails and require a high performing, trail specific shoe. The gray/blue color combination I got is excellent for not showing the dirt from the trails. The only negative I would cite is that the shoe seems a bit hot for not being Gortex; it wouldn't hurt if the makers allowed for increased ventilation. Otherwise, it's a great shoe at a very fair price. Note: I advise ordering at least a 1/2 size up as trail running forces the foot forward and toe squishing in the toe box is not only uncomfortable but can lead to toenail problems.

4th pair I’ve had!!! This is the best shoe in the world! I have bad pronation, a stress fracture in my foot that won't heal, and arthritis. This shoe works with orthotics, too. It is the most incredibly stable/cushioning, large toe box, and works just as well around the house as at the gym or on the trail.

Other shoes recommended by reviewer: find the most stable, comfortable ones!

The only choice for wide feet - This is my sixth pair of Montrail Hardrock wides. I hike about 500 miles a year in the Columbia Gorge and Cascade Range, up to 3500' elevation gain, and boots are too heavy and uncomfortable. These are the only trail running shoes that come in wide, and unfortunately they don't come in Gore-Tex, but otherwise, they're great. Good traction (not so good in snow) and super-customizable fit due to the excellent lacing system. They're trail running shoes; don't expect them to last long, but they do work well for backpacks where you're carrying less than 30 pounds.

Other shoes recommended by reviewer: I also wear keens, but for some reason they can't be bothered with adequate lacing setups or good traction.

More of a hiking shoe - I walk 5 1/2 miles daily, often on irregular turf, so I wanted a sturdier shoe. This one is very sturdy with the best arch I have ever found in a sneaker, but it is very unyielding so far and has little ventilation. Will probably switch to something else for the warmer weather. Also, it really does run small - listen to the reviews!

Montrail Hardrock - I wanted shoes for hiking 3-10 miles on rocky, dirt and sandy trails. My foot is "low volume" and fitting has always been a problem. Hardrocks are the most comfortable shoes I have ever found, right from the first hikes. After a couple of months, I purchased a second pair for future use. I wear them with orthotics.

Best shoe I've owned!!! This shoe is awesome! It was a half size smaller than normal, but other reviews led me to ordering correctly. The ankle support is great as is the room in the toe box. Had to put a more cushioned insole, but overall I'd order these again!!!

A very good hiking shoe - As with my previous Montrail shoes, these were comfortable from the 1st time I wore them. As I am 73 I really appreciate how they grip downhill looser stones when I hike.

great shoe! This is the 3rd or 4th montrail shoe i have purchased and continue to be extremely satisfied with the montrail line of shoes. I previously wore the vitasse and was also very satisfied with the shoe. I used the shoes both to train and run in the Catalina Marathon 2007 and in the Pikes Peak Ascent in Colorado 2007. Great Shoe = Happy Feet!

Fantastic good support for pronation - My husband & daughter have extreme pronation in their feet. This shoe has made jogging possible for both of them again. The ankle support and arch support are great. We did add an orthotic for both of them. Generally order 1 size larger than usual, especially if you add an orthotic.

Not as good as before - I had some Montrails several years ago. They seemed lighter and had the "sock" part where the tongue is attached to some stretchy material, so it's like putting on a sock. This model doesn’t have that. Also, I usually wear 5.5, but I had to go to a 6.

My toes fall asleep during the first part of my work out with these shoes, but only for a few minutes, then the shoes are really comfortable and give lots of support. Shoes are definitely a 1/2 size smaller than marked.

Love these shoes! I love these shoes. I needed some comfortable running shoes and I have found them! I also love the look of this shoe - it's so great - more gray and blue than it looked in the picture, but I like it better than the picture so I'm happy! I normally wear a 7, but needed a 7.5 in this shoe. The 7.5 fits perfectly. Of course, Zappos provided excellent service! I had to return the size 7 and order the 7.5 and Zappos delivered both pairs a full day earlier than I anticipated. No matter what shoes you buy, shop at Zappos. You can't beat the service.

I originally purchased a pair of Montrail Hardrock shoes in Idaho Falls. It was the best fitting walking shoe I ever owned! These shoes cushion my feet (I have a fallen arch in my left foot) and I have no pain as long as I wear these shoes, even when I am walking for hours. This is my 3rd pair in 2 years.

Super stable for trail running - Great for overpronators! My knee was bothering me, but no longer. It's amazing how the correct shoe improved my aching knees. The shoe at first was slightly stiff, but after a couple of runs, it's fine. I feel like I have the protection of a hiking boot, but in a running shoe. Nice! I normally wear a 6 and ordered a 6 1/2 and it was perfect.

Great fit and comfort but poor quality. The Hardrock provides excellent support in an extremely comfortable, lightweight trail shoe. Sadly, the quality is not what I expect in a $100 shoe. I returned my first pair when one shoe split along the edge near the laces. Zappos provided incredible service and I had a new pair the next day. Within a month they are doing the same thing. If I can find an equally comfortable alternative (which I haven't yet) I'll return them as well. If not, I'll keep them and be forever disappointed in the lack of quality.

Weird Sizing - I've had two previous pairs of Montrail Hardrocks, really like the high arch support. The old pairs were great for my narrow heel and the deep heel bed added nice stabilization. But they must have done a resizing because I can't seem to find a new styled pair that fit. My last two pairs were size 9, so I ordered a 9 and it was much too small. I ordered a 9.5, and THAT was too small too!

Good hiking-walking shoe - I don't know how this shoe would perform on a run, because I am not a runner. However, it is a very comfortable hiking shoe, with fantastic support and it's great for people who do a great amount of city walking in poor weather. It's kind of warm and I was disappointed that it got a slight tear during a hike-a trail shoe should be more resistant than that (it was a strenuous trail, but still!). Overall, I am moderately satisfied with this shoe.

Great shoe, great website - I bought these for hiking and boulder-hopping around Flagstaff. I trusted the other reviews and ordered them one size larger, and the reviews were correct. They needed no breaking in and are extremely comfortable. I also needed to insert orthotics and had no trouble. I would definitely buy these again.

I just wanted to say that Zappos.com has completely changed my perspective of online shopping. I've always been wary of doing it, thinking of all the shipping charges and problems that undoubtedly arise if I want to return something (not to mention possible scams), but Zappos has completely changed all of this for me. I heard about Zappos early 2007 when I bought myself a pair of Converse. Ever since then, I've been so impressed with the constant effort Zappos puts in to make sure every customer is satisfied, that I now try to buy everything from Zappos before I'm forced to look elsewhere. I always used to buy electronics from another store, but now I try to purchase them from Zappos, seeing as you guys are starting to carry them (which is a big plus for me, a HUGE tech junkie). I can't tell you how much I appreciate the effort of your great customer service employees and also how you guys still haven't changed your 365 day policy and free shipping both ways… even though you're starting to become pretty famous now. I plan to remain a Zappos.com customer for many years yet! ZAPPOS ROCKS!!!
