It could have been a great sandal, but it has a fatal design flaw. What could have been a great sandal is reduced to being unbearable and unwearable. As other reviewers have noted, the toe post is the cause of a great amount of discomfort. In fact, it's downright painful. The flaw is simple to identify. The toe post goes straight down to the mid-sole. Other thong sandals I've worn with comfort have a toe post that is angled out to the front of the sandal to relieve the foot of an inordinate amount of direct pressure between the toes.
The toe post on the Ankola will never break in. As other reviewers noted, the sandals can be worn for months and the toe post will still be painful. The sandals caused a very deep blister between the toes of my left foot. For a diabetic, any small wound - even a blister - can easily become infected, and necessitate amputation. No shoe is worth that risk. These are going back, and it's too bad. They're a well constructed sandal and they have a very comfortable mid-sole. It's top-notch leather, yet one little design oversight can sometimes make the best of shoes useless. This is one of those times.

A great Thong Sandal -
The Ankola thong has a unique one of a kind look compared to the other thong sandal fare in the marketplace. However, I agree with the previous review regarding the toe piece.
I purchased the Cognac color. They are the best looking, stylish, sexy, yet manly looking pair of thong sandals that I own. They fit my small (size 7) feet perfectly, but I am still trying to get used to the leather toe piece, and even after months of wearing them for two to three hour stretches at a time. I guess I really need to wear them for longer periods (perhaps all day) to really try and break them in. I will take them on a weeks vacation next month to do just that. Based on that, I might think about getting the black (assuming it has a non-marking sole), and I really can break them in on my trip.
Now the footbed is another story, comfort, comfort, comfort! Extreme comfort, I think Timberland should incorporate the footbed in their entire line.

A great looking sandal!
This leather sandal is definitely a dressier sandal, and it has great looks. The foot bed has to be one of the most cushioned and comfortable of any sandal I have ever worn. You could wear these for long walks and all day long! You only have to put them on, and you'll know. The reason I gave this only 4 stars for comfort is because of the leather toe piece which is a bit stiff. It can be somewhat uncomfortable and even painful when you wear the sandal the first few times, but after a while, you get used to it and it's not too bad. If you don't usually wear thongs, you might find these too uncomfortable to wear for long walks.

 | | This site is run by true professionals and web pioneers. They know how to run a site and know exactly what customers want: excellent products, good prices, super fast shipping, and a very painless return policy. I wish you sold everything on the net. THANKS!!! I have a 3 year old that is already in a 12.5 and needs a wide shoe. I was recommended by a friend that Stride Rite was the way to go, and of course the only place to go is Zappos. My son fits very comfortably in them and was worth the money even though he will grow out of them very soon. I am still just amazed at the extremely fast shipping. That is what I love the most. | | ~ Todd P, September 02 2008
