Starting with a single sport sandal in the spring of 1992, Rafters has expanded into performance water sport shoes, sport casual sandals, and technical sport sandals. During the last ten years, Rafters’ designers and product managers have devised new and innovative methods of producing footwear using recycled materials.
Upper webbing is made of recycled PET from plastic water and soda bottles.
Outsoles are made from 25% recycled rubber.
Lining is made from 60% bamboo fiber.
Mid wedges and outsoles are infused with jute plant fiber and cork, reducing the amount of rubber needed for production.

Great for narrow feet!
I have very narrow (and, according to the experts, "low volume") feet. So flips just don't work on me. When I saw a set of Chinooks on a gal in line at the grocery, I asked about them; they're that distinctive. She's a fan for the same reason - narrow feet. I couldn't find them locally, but Zappos has EVERYTHING. First thing to know, especially for men, is that these aren't two-strap flip-flops. They look a bit more like ruggedized versions of the Bass flips women wore around 1980. There are four straps criss-crossing, one with an adjustable buckle. Plus the rubber sole has threads interwoven and poking out. Nobody will mistake these for $5 flips. The contour and extra straps make them very secure and comfortable. They're also the best cushioning I've felt in a while. I don't generally like rubber insoles, but these feel fine. My only (minor) gripe is that the contour isn't quite for my foot shape, but the soles give enough that I quickly don't notice.

Best sandals yet!
The Rafters are superior in five areas: 1. Support. Sandals must fit snugly with no rubs. These do. 2. Prices for sandals seem to be random; no correlation between price and quality. The Rafters are GREAT value for money, so far. 3. Soles that don't mark floors. Rafters passed the "rub test" on tile, linoleum, and wood, even though they are black. No marks. 4. Appearance. Many sandals large enough for me look huge and tend to protrude in the front and sides. These look COOL. 5. Long term wear. The jury is still out on this, but so far, so good.

My favorite flip flop -
LOVE these shoes!!! Tough, rugged, and oh so comfy. Enough flexibility in the soles that makes walking natural and comfortable but tough enough to protect me from the sharp rocks we walk across to get to the boat docks. Love to wear these with my everyday clothes since they are tough and rugged without looking masculine. I went from having 10 pairs of flip flops last summer to go with each and every outfit to 1 pair this summer since they go so well with all my things. I would call the soles waterproof but not the leather. The thong portion does tolerate my tendency to get my feet wet almost everyday (i.e. watering plants, walking across rain soaked parking lots, general lake activities). Although I get them wet and tend to where them throughout the drying, they don't stretch out or sour!!! Have even thrown them in the washing machine a time or two...the leather started looking a little dry from the soap, but a little mink oil had them looking good as new very shortly. These are absolutely my favorite shoes this summer.

Very cool looking but totally unadjustable at instep and heel. Heel strap pushes my foot too far forward and the toe ridges bite into my foot.

Comfy for a casual flip -
The flip flop is quite comfortable for a casual day-I wear them to work, on the boat. If you are looking for a long walking/hiking flip flop, I would think something with more of an arch (for myself) would be better. Nonetheless, I have been wearing them every day since I got them, the web strap fits well- I like the non-slip bottoms also. More comfortable than others I have gotten, not to mention the bonus of recycled materials utilized!

I really like these. They are very comfortable. I'm watching the price. If they go on sale, I'll pick a couple of the other colors. Very nice, very comfortable.

I wear a size 9.5 regularly, so I ordered the size 10 thinking it would be the right size. I had to ship the size 10 back, and when I received the size 9 it was a great fit. The sandals are really cute. The toe strap was uncomfortable at first, but within a day or two they became comfortable.

GREAT summer comfort and support - My son arrived at his vacation destination with just ONE of his favorite shoes, Rafters. SO, the solution was to order a pair from Zappos because their delivery time would beat mine! He was very, very appreciative. Got them 2 days later at the Cody, WY post office. These shoes have great arch support, sole stability and keep feet cool. Great on hikes or water activity. GREAT PRICE TOO, and the velcro strap closures make size adjustable for a great fit.

Wonderful cool shoes -
I love these sandals! I have Chacos and Keens and these are different from both. They are much softer and lighter than Chacos, but they don't have anywhere near as much arch support. They are cooler than my Keen Newport H2s, but not as protective or supportive. So, I probably won't pick these for a rugged hike or extreme water sports, they are very comfortable, very light and cool, and super cute looking. My foot is a bit wide across the toes, (I can't fit in ladies pointy shoes, for example) but with a bit of strap adjustment, these fit well. Also, the price is fantastic compared to Chacos & Keens.

Placed my order on Saturday evening, received shoes on Monday afternoon and the shipping was free! Shoes are very pretty. I ordered a size 9, my regular size, and the shoe is a little long at the toes, but will work.

This shoe is extremely cute. Love the design and the narrow straps. Fits my narrow foot. The heel strap is not adjustable so my heel hangs off the back of the shoe... may need to order a size up for that reason. Not the most supportive or cushy insole.

I got these as a gift for my boyfriend. They look pretty good and the recycled material is a plus. He says they are comfy and haven't given him any blisters or pain; however, when I ordered them, I ordered a size 12 (he says his feet are either 11 or 12) and his toes were still on the edge of the sandal. However, he says the shoe is "stretching out" if that makes any sense, so this doesn't bother him anymore. This style of sandal would probably be good for guys claiming to wear the "metro" style and I'm pretty sure even women would look great in this sandal. I even wanted a pair! Overall, great!

An update to my previous review. I took these sandals to Greece as my only pair of daytime walking/hiking sandals and they were amazingly comfortable. They dried pretty quickly after being in the water with them. One thing to note is that the soles are somewhat thin, especially compared to Chacos. So when you are walking on rocky uneven terrain you tend to feel a lot of that through the soles. I wish I would have had my Chacos to compare in these situations. It certainly wasn't a huge deal or uncomfortable, but just something to consider. Other than that I had no comfort issues with 2 weeks of straight daytime wear. I highly recommend these sandals. I just wish they came in a few more colors. I normally wear a 9-9.5, but had to order a 10 in these.

Much comfier than the similar Teva Hurricane 3 -
These are similar to Teva’s Hurricane 3, but are much comfier. There's a fabric pad underneath the plastic ring on the front straps to prevent it from rubbing against your skin, which the Hurricane 3s lack. The tread on these is grippier, too, if that matters to you. The texture on the soles is interesting. Very anti-slip. Almost feels like a foot massage as you walk, although I can imagine that it might start to feel less comfortable if you walked for an extended period (without socks). These are not as fast to get in and out of as my current favorite sandals, the recently discontinued Reef Convertibles (which have a handy plastic snap-in connector on the rear strap). With the Cascades, you need to undo a velcro strap and pull on the lower part of it to create slack to get your foot in/out. Note that I wear a 10.5, so interpret my "felt a half size smaller than marked" for the 11 accordingly.

More comfortable than I expected…
Though I wanted the black ones, I found the green ones charming. I had ordered a more expensive pair of sandals in a different brand, but sent them back. At first, getting the sandal straps adjusted was a challenge, but afterward, I never had to mess with them again. They are secure, very cushy in the heel, and a pleasure to wear. I walked several blocks in them one day and my only complaint was the friction under my toe. I've not had that problem since. I advise washing them often if you wear them every day - walk into a creek or the ocean. They can get a little smelly if you don't, even WITH the antibacterial layer… but these are a great, functional summer shoe at a great price. Oh - and I wear a nine and half, but the nines were perfect, so go a half size down if you can.

Not worth the money -
I was very disappointed in this flip-flop. Other than the gel in the heel, this really is not much better or different than any other flip-flop you can buy in one of the health & beauty aids stores; just more expensive. The arch is not good at all and I purchased this thinking I would get a decent arch. So, save your money or buy a different brand of flip-flop... one that is better made and worth the extra bucks.

Pretty comfortable and very light!
After trying several other brands (Teva, Bite, Keen) I was between these and a pair of Chaco's. These are about 1/2 the price and 5oz lighter. The Chaco's have a might thicker, heftier sole which might last longer. Overall the Rafters are very comfortable. They are adjustable in 2 places similar to a pair of Teva’s, but not behind the ankle. The clasp is very easy to get in and out of. The padding on each side of the ankle sits low enough so as to not dig into your protruding ankle bones. My only quibble is that I would get rid of the front right strap that covers your little toe to make them just a little more minimalist. Also a few more color choices would be nice other than black/charcoal and green.

 |  | After spending several hours of my time yesterday and burning a lot of precious gasoline trying to find a pair of wingtip shoes, I went home frustrated after finding out that there was not one shoe store in my city that sells the timeless classic. Due to the fact that I had procrastinated (as usual) purchasing the shoes that I needed for my son's wedding which is only two days away, I was certain that I would have to compromise my choice of shoe to go with my new suit. As a last ditch attempt, I went online and quickly found Zappos.com. The website is first rate and incredibly easy to shop.
