Don't let my Newport Beach location fool you; I was born in Iceland and I ordered these in preparation for a trip to Reykjavik. Although it was tough to decide, I ended up buying The North Face McMurdo boot instead and sending these back. STYLE: These boots are really nice looking which are their best feature. They are sleek, make your foot look small (no clown feet here) and definitely have a feminine look - which is quite a feat when dealing with functional hiking boots. Because the toe box is narrow and the laces are cute, these look great even when your ski pants and/or bootcut jeans cover the top of the shoe which is a definite plus. COMFORT: I have regular feet in a regular width. I have no bunions or any other issues with my feet, and I agree with the reviewer who said that the toe-box is narrow on these shoes. I normally wear a size 8 or 8½ and I ordered these in a 9. I tried them on with thick WigWam socks and they pushed in a little on my toes as I walked around the house - which worried me. These are extremely lightweight. I can't verify their warmth, but The North Face McMurdo boot definitely felt much warmer. Each Merrell boot weighs 1.2 pounds vs. the 1.7 for each McMurdo boot, but the McMurdo is just a much more substantial boot (hence the extra weight is worth it). The sole of the Merrell felt narrow enough that I didn't feel as "sure-footed" in these, almost as if my foot inside the shoe was rolling a little over the side's edges - just a smidgen but again, enough for worry. OTHER SPECS: This shoe has a nice 2 inch heel (lug) which is great if you tend to feel "frumpy" when wearing athletic clothes like I do. But The North Face McMurdo also has a nice 2-inch heel and it just felt like a much more solid, stable and warm boot. The Merrells would make cute, lightweight hiking boots - felt much more like high top sneakers than a solid durable cold weather hiking boot. The height of the Merrell boot measured from the heel up is about 6½ inches vs. 8 inches for the McMurdo (less boot = less weight). The shoelaces are adorable, but you can always buy cute colored shoelaces for any boot you purchase. I intend to buy cute colored laces for my Black/Pumice Grey North Face boots to give them more of a feminine feel and to match my ski jacket (LOL). Bottom line - with the free shipping both ways, you have nothing to lose by ordering a few different boots from Zappos and trying them on at home. Hope this was helpful!

Great boots but not waterproof! I love these boots except for one aspect: They are advertised as waterproof but they are not, and given the price they really ought to advertise truthfully or make them truly waterproof. I bought these for my Winter boots where I work (Afghanistan). At first they were awesome, super warm, great support, fantastic grip (a must have here, especially in Winter) and stylish on top of all that. Then the first snows came. Walking through low snow in these my feet quickly got ice cold, and after having to navigate a few slushy puddles (none too deep) the boots quickly got wet. Unfortunately they were the only boots I had here, and I had no choice but to keep wearing them until I could order a better pair. For a week I was walking around in semi-moist, cold boots. I would chalk it up to the environment I'm in but...these are expensive, and they are advertised as waterproof. These are probably great boots for cold weather hiking, just not if you anticipate any moderate exposure to water, snow or slush. I still love them, but because they are not waterproof I was forced to order another pair to wear for most of Winter. For that, I have to give them 2 stars overall, and 3 stars for comfort. Sorry, Merrell. Most reviewers state these boots run small. I normally wear a 9.5 but ordered a 10 for that reason. I probably could've worn the 9.5, as even with thick socks these are a bit clunky (but still wearable) on me. So the "runs small" may apply more to the smaller sizes than those that are size 9 and up.

Love these boots! Ordered an 8 when I'm usually a 7.5 just because they're winter boots and I wanted extra space for thick socks. I'm glad I ordered an 8, they fit perfectly. Stayed warm throughout the hunting season and were nice and light weight for walking out to the tree stand. Can't wait to use them for snow shoeing, they're so light and warm I'm sure they'll be awesome. Highly recommend spending the money to get this quality product!

I love these boots! I read the reviews about the color but I really like it. I am glad they are not so white. Very pale grey, pretty color. Very comfortable. Great on ice, not just snow.

I never write reviews but, I had to chime in for these Merrell's. I have been looking for boots to use hiking in the White Mt of New Hampshire for some time. I have wide feet and did not want to invest in mountaineering boots until I was confident I would use them. I usually wear a size 8 Merrell boot but I have a wide foot. So, normally, I rely on the sideways give of the boot. This boot is solid plastic at the base and so I ordered a size 9 to get the right fit. What made me want to write a review is that I wore them out of the box for an almost 11 miles hike with microspikes and snow shoes. They felt so light! They were TOTALLY comfortable for the whole time! Because of my wide feet, I only wore my regular fall weight socks. But, in addition to being comfortable, my feet were super dry all day! At one point my toes were a smidge nippy but, never to any real degree. Because my feet are so wide and I cannot really get thicker socks in there, I will likely not wear these shoes for hiking in the single digits but, they are a great light weight, dry, comfortable option for those winter days in the 20s or up.

I assume this is what normal people feel like when they walk! I have had many major surgeries on my feet / legs, and walking has been the most difficult thing for me! I have some Merrell slip-ons, but I cannot really walk my dog in those (in Minnesota winter), so I ordered these hoping for comfort, and they definitely came through! I just walked four miles in the snow, without stopping, and I have no pain! It is the first time in five years that I can claim this! I did order half a size larger, as directed by other reviewers, and I am happy I did! They are amazing!
