Great shoe, great design. I purchased these and the New Balance MT10v2 and I like these much better, in part because of better sizing. (See my review of the MT10v2 for more details.) I have a relatively narrow heel, but because of 1) the extra eyelet for a lace-lock loop and 2) the intersection of the heel reinforcement strip and the mid-foot plastic reinforcement, it was easy to really lock my heel down. The lacing works very well, in part thanks to the plastic/rubbery reinforcement lattice. Going downhill my toes weren't pushing into the front of the shoe. The because the heel and mid-foot areas hold the foot so well, the forefoot can be (and is) very roomy letting my forefoot and toes spread out. The mesh fabric seems tough (I've only put about 20 miles of jogging and fast hiking on them) and breathes very well. I can feel it when a breeze comes up. The forefoot plate (I'm told there is one there, didn't feel it) seems to protect well from pointy objects on the trail, and the heel padding seems to be adequate for protection as well. Lastly, the sole pattern seems to provide really good grip. Ascending and descending a very steep section of trail with loose, powdery dirt on top, I was able to keep my footing and descend with confidence. I haven't tried them in mud or smooth rock surfaces yet. Pros: Well sized. Excellent design for holding foot in shoe. Good protection from rocks. Light and breaths well. Spacious forefoot lets foot spread out. Cons: If you're running in really cold or wet/damp conditions, you might try a different shoe or use warmer socks. The laces are a bit short if you are using a lace-lock loop at the top. I'm currently in touch with Merrell about getting longer laces. (I want to get the same kind because they work so well.) Overall, I love this shoe and highly recommend it.

I've worn and loved these shoes for years, but they've changed the materials and now the shoe is very uncomfortable. The new fabric doesn't breathe, and the soles are hard and inflexible. I tried contacting Merrell directly, but they sent me back to "where I purchased them." Won't buy this shoe again.

I am on my 3rd pair of these awesome running shoes. I love this shoe. I have 2 pairs of the original trail gloves and the size was true. on the Trail glove 2 I noticed a significant size difference. about 1/2 size larger. I have run several hundred miles in this shoe.

I wanted & needed this shoe to work. I've got very flat size 10.5 feet. I tend to injure my knee whenever I don't run in my Vibrams. However Vibrams look bananas and offer your feet zero to no cushion on paved surfaces, which hurts like hell over time. This brings me to my acquisition of these merrells. They felt great when I tried them on, and cushioned. My first gripe is regarding a design flaw. The opening of the shoe flares out, south of the ankle bones, when laced up. If used as a trail shoe, expect to bring a lot of nature home with you! So that was a sad defect. Second gripe, on my measly 1 mile treadmill run today, I got a blister?!?! The lacing system has a great glove like sensation, but the lace brace is placed too far down toward the sole of the shoe... I ended up limping home with a blister just above my foot's arch. Had this lace hole been higher, I assume the tongue of the shoe would have provided some protection. Meh!

I'd also recommend: Vibram

I own the previous version of this shoe, but I've worn it out. Merrells all run large. I typically wear 11-11.5. I wear the original trail glove in a size 10.5 so naturally I bought these in the same size, but they are even bigger! Had to exchange for 10's which seems so small for me, but they fit great. The main reason I wear zero drop shoes like these is for weight training, but I fell in love with the feel. Calling them gloves is pretty accurate; you can bend and flex the entire shoe (even the sole) just by moving your feet. They are also really breathable. You can even feel a breeze through them when it's windy. The Black/Silver color is so cool. I also like the Green/Lime, but it's so bright I can't really see wearing them outside of the gym.
