Just returned from 3 days on the AT in No. GA where we started in rain, hiked through 4 inches of snow then the aftermath of melting snow and these boots did it all. They gave plenty enough traction in wet conditions and kept the moisture out when hiking in the snow or the mud. My right ankle was broken long ago, so I need more support than a true bare foot shoe. However, I have a terrible shin splint in my left leg that can be helped by a shoe that promotes more of a forefoot strike. So I was looking for a minimalist feel with maximum support. I don't "break shoes in." Either they're comfortable or they're not and these were the best piece of equipment I could have had. I am extremely picky with shoes and have worn Merrells and Keens in the past for hiking, working and nights on the town. These shoes are light, but sturdy; ventilated, but water tight, and they look great muddy. I just ordered the low top version.

I've been wearing the Mid Sport for a month now. This is part of Merrell's new Proterra line which is quite a departure from other Merrells I have owned. It's very lightweight and super-comfortable like all Merrells. However, the design of the sole compares more to a cross-trainer gym shoe than a hiker. This allows you to hit the ground mid-foot. The best way to describe the Mid Sport is like a high-tech moccasin. The sole has surprisingly good grip on gravel and dirt due to its crisscross design. I wear an 11 Medium and it felt true to size to me. As others have said, there is plenty of room around your toes but if you wear thicker socks like I do it's not an issue. The material lets your feet breathe in hot weather but it's definitely not waterproof and not a cold-weather boot. I wouldn't wear this trail-running more than 2 miles and wouldn't backpack with more than 20-30 pounds of weight with this quarter-boot. There's just not enough cushioning and ankle support. But for casual or adventuring footwear they are great. They need to bring out more colors soon. The "Brindle" color is a shade darker than its pictured here. It's more of a flat dark earth color.

I own 3 different pairs of Merrell Barefoot Gloves and absolutely love them. So, when I ordered these I was expecting the same glove-like fit, but with some cushioning and ankle support for when I hike/backpack. From my ankle to the front of my arch fit great, but from there forward felt cavernous. If you could imagine an incandescent lightbulb shape, that's what it seemed to feel like. They were great on descents and didn't allow any toe jamming, but when angling across any inclines the front of my foot would keep sliding side to side in the boot. Love Merrells, but I guess these just weren't for me.
