I own low-cut version, which provide excellent support & fit, so wanted the higher boot version. Very well satisfied. Even better fit and solid bed support. These are boots -- with rugged soles. Comfort is high. No real break-in required. Used on a Glacier Park hike (smooth trail) with no discomfort or notice (the acid test!). Feet remain cool. I use orthotic inserts, but prior found Merrell last perfect for my feet.

I bought these for light/medium trail hiking around streams as well as truckin' around the urban jungle. I normally wear an 8.5 shoe, but got these in a 9 and they fit perfectly. The Chameleon is a step up in structure from the very light boots that are basically upscale sneakers. These have combination leather/nylon uppers with some stiffeners around the central foot area. The toe and Achilles are well-protected, and the ankles well-supported. The Chameleon provides excellent overall foot protection from rocks, roots and fallen branches. You certainly don't feel every stone on which you step. The Vibram soles provide excellent grip, even on wet rocks, but they aren't suction cups. The GORE-TEX provides great breathability and waterproofing. I find the included insoles acceptable for the purposes that I listed. The boots require a short break-in because of their stiffer construction, but that's the price of better protection. I also like the lacing system, which allows the forward foot, top of the instep, and ankles to vary in tightness for a "custom" fit. After breaking these in around the house and mall, I hiked a local trail with varied terrain and several stream crossings. The Chameleons performed extremely well wearing Covert Threads' Sand socks. With the Vibram soles and solid construction, I expect them to last a long time. As usual, Zappos service excels.
