I've been searching high and low for a dark brown oxford that will work with suits-khakis-jeans, stand up to inclement weather, looks better than your average comfort shoe, but above all would be really comfortable, particularly for my hard to fit right foot. After going through a number of pretty good looking shoes that didn't quite make the comfort criteria for me (Allen Edmonds Wilbert and Aberbeen, Johnston & Murphy Hosford Y-Moc, Florsheim Haviland-best buy in my opinion, Frye James Lug Oxford), I've finally settled on this Mephisto as coming closest to what I wanted on most counts. This is a decent quality shoe, although clearly overpriced. The leather seems good quality, but not as obviously so as the Wilbert for example or other higher end shoes in general. The finish is muted, i.e. not shiny, allowing it to work with jeans and khakis but not so much so that it doesn't work with dress pants or a suit also. It is very soft and flexible, almost like a slipper, giving you the sense of comfort before even putting it on, so I m not sure it will stand up to the weather criteria very well. I ll treat it heavily with waterproof spray to protect it best I can. One major point to consider. Although the length seems true to size, this shoe runs very wide. That s a problem for me since my feet are somewhat narrow, but I m not downsizing. Mephisto s recommendation is to be sure the shoe is large enough to allow for their "unique comfort from walking". I m using Spenco basic inserts, flat with no arch, and they ve helped, but the shoe still feels a little big, especially at the heel. Over time I don t know if that will be a problem, but I m going to give it a shot. Overall, this is a pretty good shoe, the best compromise for me across all those I considered. Good looks and very versatile, and probably a great fit for those of you with wide feet. But again, overpriced compared to other shoes I've tried in this price range. Shout out to Zappos for hanging with me, with overnight shipping every time and excellent service overall.
