I hate to say it, but the prevailing opinion in these reviews is spot-on: these boots fall apart quickly. I bought a pair for a 25-day backpacking trip through the High Sierra despite the warnings because the boots fit great, were comfortable and appeared to be very rugged. By the fifth day of the trip, after 40 miles of use, the soles were literally falling apart. Portions of the edges had fallen off such that there were fairly large gaps around the edges. The rubber in these areas resembled a pool toy that had sat out in the sun for years, an obvious sign that the sole was made of inferior rubber. A large fraction of the sole around the heel had nearly severed off in a large chunk. I applied liberal superglue to this large chunk but this didn't make much difference. By the end of the trip the tread had worn down past the halfway point. The tread underneath the tip of the toe and end of the heel had completely worn off such that I was down to smooth rubber. The rest of the boot held up okay (with the exception of the threading along an apparently cosmetic strip coming loose). Don't be fooled by the rugged appearance, these are light hikers not meant to last. I'm shocked a boot company that cares about its reputation would make such a low-quality product marketed to high-end users, or anyone for that matter. Don't buy these boots unless you're okay with purchasing a disposable product.

A very light weight, comfortable and stable boots. However, and a big however, I had the same problem as others with the midsole material first developing cracks and then chipping off on rocky terrain. I loved everything about these boots until the midsole problem started about 1 year in. I would not recommend these boots unless Lowa has fixed this fundamental problem.

I purchased this boot to replace an all leather Lowa model no longer available. I ordered the 11 wide because that was the size of my previous Lowa. It feels a little short and a little narrow compared to the previous boot. I broke it in by wearing it around the house for 2 weeks, and then by walking to work and wearing it at work for 2 weeks. It got more comfortable and I believe it was fully broken in. There is not much thickness to the Newbuck or much padding other than the ankles. I used the boot on one 12 mile day hike up to Mount Adams in the White mountains of New Hampshire. This hike has a lot of rocks and many of them are wet or damp. I was constantly slipping on the rocks and especially on any roots and felt terribly unsafe. This boot significantly slowed me down because I just couldn't trust the traction. Only my hiking poles saved me from serious injury. I found that the Goretex does NOT breathe very well and had to change my socks several times from perspiration saturation. The interior was completely soaked and I could literally wring my socks out. Because of the lack of padding, any rub against a rock was painful. Fortunately there is a full length shank and the support under foot was fantastic. The sole is seriously chewed up after 12 miles and I can't see this boot lasting more than 50 miles in the White Mountains. At a cost that is over less per mile! The lacing system is unusual as it goes all the way to the toes. Some boots have special eyelets that allow you to lockout an area of the lacing system so the tension can remain different than other areas on the boot. This boot does not have that ability; which it should considering how long the lacing system is. So, you really can't control the tension in different sections of the boot. This boot is probably best for the casual hiker who does not hike on rocky terrain. I would definitely not recommend it for backpacking or any serious hiking in serious terrain.

I was looking for a lightweight hiking boot and decided to try Lowa. The boots broke in quickly and I headed to MT for some rough trail hikes. After a day on some rocky trails I noticed the soft grey sub-sole was cracked and failing in many spots with gouges tore out from sharp rocks. The grey appears to be some type of foam. So while you will look sharp sitting by the camp fire or walking around the Old Faithful visitor center, it would be best to pass on this boot if you are planning serious hikes.

Hiked Pikes Peak (14 miles) on my first hike wearing the boots and they were comfortable. No pressure points, no blisters. I bought half a size larger than I normally wear to have room for thick socks and feet swelling and the size is right. Compared to my old pair of Kaylands, these have roomier toe box.
