These boots are awesome! I wore these boots for 10-16 hours a day right out of the box and they performed perfectly. The boots arrived the afternoon before I left on a trip to Thailand for 30 days. The work I was doing required a lot of walking on hot pavement and climbing on steep dam faces covered with large boulders. Each step felt sure. With these boots, I never got a blister or hot spot. My feet were comfortable. I have narrow feet and was particularly worried about whether the boots would work for me. They were a dream. I cant wait to try hiking in them.

Very satisfied. As others have stated, these boots are comfortable straight away. I quickly replaced the insole with green Superfeet and love the comfort. Buyers should know these are not stiff shoes. If you hike a lot of rocky or rooty trails, or carry 30+ pound packs, I would consider another shoe (Vasque perhaps). Anything less and you cannot lose with these. They are my shoe of choice for any traveling I do involving outdoor activities. Excellent craftsmanship in a real quality boot. I highly recommend these; comfort and quality in a lightweight, but supportive boot.

(Men's size 10B; bought 10.5M). I bought a pair of these back in '01 and they lasted 7 years. Awesome shoes. I really wanted a new pair, but at the price they better be perfect. Tried a pair of 10.5 Narrow. Turns out that they lowered the heel ridge so that with custom orthotics, the ridge sits right on the heel instead of just above, so I get significant heel slip. (Same story with the medium width.) That, with others' complaints about stitching, was too much for me. A shame; they really were very lightweight and comfortable. (BTW, these shoes cannot be re-soled.)

I have been looking at these boots for awhile now. Zappos had them on sale so I jumped on them. I have bad ankles and need a boot with good ankle support for hunting in the mountains. I also need a boot that is waterproof, durable, comfortable, quiet, and has great traction in all conditions. These boots meet all my requirements. I may put in some insoles with more cushion however. I was a little leery of the sole when I got them. I thought they may be too rugged and hard for good wet traction on rocks and also being quiet etc, but these soles are soft which provides great traction and are almost silent on hard surfaces. I normally would prefer a super-lightweight boot for bow hunting, but I will gladly trade a little extra weight for the ankle support and durability that these boots provide. For serious mountain hunting, I highly recommend these boots as well as Kenetreks.

This is my fourth pair of Lowa Renegades which I guess pretty much says it all about how much I like these boots. They're light, tough, and at least in my experience require about 15 seconds of "break in" time. Great boots...and outstanding service from Zappos.com, I might add.

This boot came highly recommended by many of my hunting buddies. I needed a good boot for mountain hunting (goat/sheep/bears/caribou) and hiking, as most of my hunting takes place on very steep areas either at or above tree line. I got a couple of blisters while breaking them in, when they were stiff. Since the break in period has been over, they have been absolutely the best boot I have ever owned. I have worn these boots on all my hikes and hunts (that don't require hip boots), both steep and flat hikes/hunts. Well worth the money.

Lowa Hunter GTX Extreme - I use the boots for elk hunting in Colorado. I have owned a variety of boots in my hunting career and never found a boot that works better. The best boot (in my opinion) on the market for carrying heavy loads on your back and side swiping rocky terrain. I suggest you purchase the boot at least a month before you plan on using them to break in.

Okay, good for a narrow fit, but with drawbacks - Lightest pair of footwear I've ever owned. I usually take a men's 12 and that's what I ordered, but it felt slightly small/tight in the toe box, plus my toes were tight against the end of the boot when going down steep terrain. Ordered the next size up & no more problem. Comparing the innersole one over the other, size 13 gives less than a pencil's width of extra space over size 12 & I'd suggest getting a 1/2 to full size larger than you normally wear just to be safe. I wouldn't worry about floating in them by upsizing. Felt like there was no arch support. I have narrow/low volume feet & added a green Superfeet insole for more or less a perfect fit with good arch support. Nice, snug heel. Water resistance is fine & XCR material gives optimal breathability. Downside: the soles are comparable to a street shoe (they're not aggressive tread) and I could feel every piece of rough surface underfoot. Ankle support seemed okay, but due to the thin soles, the base of my foot would roll when walking over rocks or other larger trail debris and the sides of the boot worked overtime to keep my foot in place. In comparison, my running sneakers have thicker soles & give better support than these boots. If you're walking on paved/dirt roads, fields or on relatively smooth trails, this boot would be great. I do not recommend it for even the slightest rough terrain. If Lowa added a better, thicker, more aggressive sole, this could be an awesome boot and worthy of an overall 5 star rating in all categories.

Perfect Easy Hiker - I purchased the Lowa Renegade GTX Lo Lady as an alternative hiking /walking shoe. I found that my boots were over kill on an easy trail, but running shoes were not supportive or stiff enough for my preference. I am very pleased with the heavy tread and support that this shoe provides. They seem very well made, and should last longer than other less expensive brands. They are reasonably attractive for this type of footwear. I should also mention that they did not seem to need a breaking in period, I walked for a little over 2 hours the first time out and felt great, no blisters!

Great friends with these boots...in less than a month. I have a high instep which can make it hard to get boots on and off. Not with these, undo the first eye's and a little pull on the tongue and step out...very nice. The boots can be cinched up to give great ankle support as well as aiding in walking by giving you a little kick forward with every step. I bought them to use in my fishing boat in the spring and fall, hope to stay warm and dry (I'll post another review if I get wet feet)? Minnesota, nine months of winter and three months of tough sledding.

Excellent Hiking Boot for hard to fit feet - I tried about 14 pairs of hiking boots before I settled on these. I have a very hard to fit foot. It's wide, and even some wide widths aren't quite enough. I was a little hesitant at first to keep these because I didn't feel they were as comfortable as I wanted, however, after about a 1 week break-in period I am sooooooo glad I kept them. They turned out to be the "best" hiking boot I've ever bought. (I did have to put a "ball of the foot" gel insert in but that's just because of my foot problems.) I was just going to use these on hikes where it wasn't rocky but I love these boots so much I use these on all our hikes now. They give excellent support. I am in the process of ordering another pair, that's how good they are. I would recommend these to everyone especially those with a wide foot. Simply the best hiking boot I've ever found and I've been looking a very long time (I'm 48).

Lowa's Khumbu Mid GTX Lady - Not what I expected - I have a pair of Lowa's and they are my favorite hiking boot. I was hoping to add another to my collection however these boots were too narrow even though they were supposed to be wide width. I thought they were very uncomfortable, especially compared to the Lowa's I already have. Very disappointing.

Lowa Tempest Lo - I'm 48 years old and have lower back pain especially if I am standing on my feet at work all day. My back pain remains almost non-existent when I wear these shoes they are really good support for my back. I've been fairly true to this brand since 2002. They are well made and last too. Since 2002 I am on my fourth pair. Thanks

Best Ever! I have worn loads of boots and shoes over the last 12 years running trails and hiking 14ers. The Trekker is now my favorite. It is like a protective grippy high-top leather sneaker. It took a while for me to break in, I've got really tender feet and I wear a custom orthotic, but now it is my most comfortable footwear. Not just the best boot, but the best thing on my feet period. I'm on my feet all day at work and I wear them regularly. I use a thick SmartWool sock and my feet stay perfectly comfortable, not hot. If they fit you, I think they'll be a favorite.

Lightweight city & smooth trail boot - Like many boots from Lowa, the AL-X 89XCR Mid combines a roomy toe area with a snug-fitting heel. I hesitated before checking five stars only because of the moderate arch support and relative lack of cushioning on the sole. But that just means they fit and feel more like moccasins. I consider these minor drawbacks are a tradeoff for exceptional light weight and fixable with a relatively thin orthotic. (Green Superfeet insoles are too thick; I'll try the thinner blue Superfeet insoles.) I've never found Zappos' multiple choice questions helpful, but you have to mark them if you want to submit a review, so I've just checked the middle choice. But here's what my feet are like: Store clerks bring me size 11.5 medium. But because I have long toes, a wide forefoot, a narrow heel, and an arch that's closer to the back of my feet than to the front (because of the long toes), I usually need a size 12 in street shoes to get enough room for the toes. But then with many brands, the problem becomes too much room in the heel. The AL-X 89 XCR Mid is one of several Lowa boots I've had that fit great right out of the box. I get a size 13M, wear a medium thick hiking sock, adjust the lacing, and put in a pair of Superfeet, if necessary. (The Korba and Zephyr are other Lowa models that fit perfectly and, since they have excellent arch support, don't need Superfeet.) Lowa used to put out a paper catalogue that had a kind a family tree for the different lasts. My suggestion is to try several Lowas -- or talk with their excellent customer support staff -- and find out which ones might best fit your feet.

Shoes not narrow - I have narrow feet. These shoes come in a B width. But they are not B. Thought not a D width like most shoes they are too wide for a B. I would give these shoes a C width. Even so they are excellent shoes. But if you have real narrow feet even the narrow will be too wide.

Great Fit for Narrow Feet - I have narrow feet, with a narrower heel; finding a good fit in a boot I can use for backpacking has always been a chore, and always required long, painful break-in periods. These boots felt like slippers on my feet, right out of the box! Having just bought them recently (mid-winter), I haven't put many miles, or hills on them yet; however, I have used them in the snow, with a 30lb pack. They feel better than any boot I have ever tried. I was a little concerned about the mid-cut height (I also have weak ankles) but had no problems in less than desirable trail conditions, with packed snow and ice. My (3) previous pairs of boots were all Vasque Sundowners. The Lowas are so much lighter, and no break-in; and, the cut is actually almost the same height as my Vasques.

Ron's Review - This is a very comfortable, light-weight boot. It has medium arch support and with the insole removed makes an excellent boot to use your custom orthotic in. Wish it was available in brown so that I could own 2 pairs.

Lowa Renegade GTX Mid - I am using these shoes mostly at my part time job as college security guard. I am in and out of buildings and walk on all kinds of surfaces. I have put about 50 miles on them and have found them to provide good footing in snow and on rubber, granite, plastic, wood... I was concerned that the souls might be too hard, but they absorb shock sufficiently--they are softer than my old Italian made hikers. Must be that cushioning? I am pleased with these. The quality seems such that they should hold up for a few years of hiking and working.

GREAT BOOT!!! A friend recommended LOWA to me a few years ago, (he just got his third pair), now that I have a pair Ill never go back, incredibly comfortable, I work for a national delivery company and am on my feet all day, & good footwear is very important, just as comfortable at the end of the day as when I put them on.

Decent boots, however, found better ones. I've been searching for the perfect fitting hiking boot for me. I tried this one which initially was great, however, during the hike, even though my laces were tied as tight as possible, the leather on the boot seemed to be stretching out quickly and became loose on my foot. I wasn't wearing my regular mid-weight hiking socks at the time and I thought wow! If I had worn them these boots, they would have been stretched out way too much for me to use my regular socks again. Yes, they did fit perfectly before the hike. They ended up being too loose too quickly and didn't give me enough ankle and foot support.

First of all, I only buy boots from Zappos because I can buy my boots based on the shaft and most importantly by the circumference. That said, I was disappointed with the circumference of this boot. I bought this Fitzwell Rosie which says it is a 14" circumference. I also purchased the Fitzwell Lycra which boasts a 14.5" circumference. The problem is that, this 14" is larger (more like a 15" or 16") than the 14.5" which fits snug like I like them. I love this boot, but with long skinny legs and small calves, this is an ill fit and I havent decided whether or not I will keep them. However, they are very classy, timeless looking boots.
