These are a very good shoe to have in the quiver. I use these, North Face & Scarpas, all primarily as approach shoes for climbing or general hiking. Since my NF & Scarpas are generally gore-tex, I favor these for warmer weather. I use an orthodic, and the other reviewer is right: these are not especially soft. I have them in size 12, and with the ortho they fit well. I have very flat, relatively low volume feet, a bit wide at the bunion. I especially liked these in rocky terrain like Joshua Tree or the Dolomites. They are also lighter than my alternatives. My version had some issues with part of the toe rising up, or just not lying flat around the laces in the front, but it looks like the new design addresses this. I would recommend these for the uses I've enjoyed them for: they are generally my go-to approach shoe.

I'd also recommend: Scarpa, North Face

These are approach shoes. There is minimal cushioning. They are very good on rough rocky terrain, not so good for high daily miles. They feel very hard underfoot, even with a cushioning replacement insole. I have a narrow foot and these, with the replacement insole, are snug. I use and really like Inov-8 Roclite 315's for high mileage (not so good for carrying loads). On the Roclites I have to add a half insole in the toe in order to fit my narrow foot. These shoes are extremely well made. The rubber rand is strong and well secured. I haven't done enough rock scrambling to make up my mind on the raised heel. So far it hasn't been a problem. The design features I dislike are the two heel pull-on loops. They are too small to get a finger through so they are of minimal help. It's a case of style over function and a bad idea on an otherwise functional shoe.
