This is a light-duty hiking boot, based on the design of the upper. The sole is stiff, as expected for a good hiking boot. I returned it because it's not what I want. This is an alternative to a Merrel Moab, except it will accommodate a wider foot.
Brands I'd also recommend: Keen, Scarpa, Merrell

The back of the heel is rock hard, no padding whatsoever. It is not bad for walking around on flat surfaces but if you are going up even a slight incline it will rub you raw. I called and complained and they just said to wear them in. 40 miles later and I am still experiencing the same problem.
