I am a coffee lover. I love the aroma, flavor, everything about it. I drink my coffee black. I buy my beans whole, store them in a vacuum sealed, airtight container and grind them fresh for each pot. I use cold filtered water to brew. I am serious about my coffee. Here is my review of the Krups KT720D50. Positive: - It is a really sexy looking machine. It feels like quality. Where you see stainless steel it feels like stainless steel and not plastic made to look like stainless. I have read negative reviews about the fingerprints on the stainless. WD-40 on a paper towel will keep your stainless looking new at all times. That is a really lame reason not to get something this gorgeous. - It has a thermal carafe and no heating element in the base. I hate my coffee cooked all day on a heating element. Yuk! In fact, it has this cool looking clear plastic floating base with a sculpted middle to hold the pot in the exact correct position to brew. I took the temperature of my first cup. I got my second cup about 2 hours later and it had only lost 2 degrees in temperature. - It is simple. There are 4 simple buttons and no stupid clock (why do I need another clock in the kitchen?) and no useless timer to break. I grind my beans fresh, remember? Leaving them sit in the filter basket overnight to dry out doesn't make good coffee. Put your water in the night before, but add your coffee in the morning and press the button. Brew time is about 10 minutes. You can wait. The hardest part of using this machine is deciding whether to push the regular brew or the aroma brew. - The filter is conical rather than flat bottomed so the brew is richer. The spray head thoroughly saturates the beans to extract flavor. It came with a permanent filter, which was a nice bonus. Paper filters will absorb the essential oils that should be in your coffee. Use the permanent kind and always keep it clean by emptying and rinsing right after use and you will be happier with your coffee's flavor. - The machine has an aroma button to brew more slowly allowing for a stronger brew, if desired. - The size fits under my cabinet and does not stick out obtrusively as it looks in the photo, so do not be afraid. Do measure the distance between your countertop and the bottom of your cabinet to make sure it will fit if this will sit on a counter. This is a tall machine. - This is so easy to fill. There are two ways. Do not listen to the nay-sayers. I use filtered water from a PUR pitcher, so I just open the hole at the top and fill with water, then close the hole and press the button to brew. Yep. It's that easy. Or you could press the release button on the water reservoir, remove it from the back of the machine, fill it with water, then push it back in place until it clicks. So easy. People are complaining that they can't get water into the unit without it spilling all over the counter. I have to think that this is a user error. It isn't that hard. I have also read negative reviews that people had to slide the unit out from under the cabinet to fill. Come on! Have you ever owned a machine where that wasn't the case? Is this really a problem in America? - The cool blue lights on the machine add to the sexy factor and I really like the soft open / soft close swing out filter basket that is controlled by a release button. I have also read negative reviews that the buttons look the same for the water reservoir and the filter basket releases and it is hard not to mistake them. Again, user error. The basket button shows a coffee bean on it and the water reservoir button shows a water droplet on it. Again, not that hard. - There is also a cool blue light under the water reservoir so you can see how much water is left to brew during the brew cycle. I have read a negative review that complained that she couldn't read the water level. I strain under the weight of responsibility to correct these inaccurate reviews. - This is the first coffee carafe that I have owned in years that doesn't drip. Not a single drop. It pours perfectly with no mess whatsoever. I have read reviews of the opposite and I can only assume that they were written by people who didn't actually buy the machine and just like to post negative reviews. - And finally, this sucker brews a pretty good cup of hot coffee. I was surprised at the full flavor and smoothness due to what I am about to tell you in the negative column. Negative: - Optimal coffee brewing temperature is between 197 - 204. This is very difficult to achieve in a home brewer, I know. I have scoured reviews and the only one that seems to consistently hit the mark is Bunn, but I think they are energy inefficient in that they hold the next pot of water in a heated holding tank until you are ready to brew again. The water tastes stale and transfers to your coffee. Scale builds in them. Making less than half a pot can screw with the amount in the holding tank and mess up your next pot. I'm just not a Bunn fan. Anyhow, the brew temp reads 160 on the Krups. I have taken the temp in the basket and in the brewed coffee. It may brew at a slightly higher temp as it is impossible to test during the actual brew cycle. I have also read elsewhere that sometimes you have to break in a coffee maker and the brew temperature will improve with use. We'll see. As mentioned above, I am slightly dissatisfied, but the end result is a really good cup of coffee, so I am okay with this. It is, however, the reason for four stars rather than 5. - The push to serve button on the lid on the carafe seems fragile. I will handle it as such, but I have my concerns how well it will hold up. The lid functions by depressing the thumb lever so that the top pivots open to pour. You push the lid back down manually when you are done. It doesn't automatically flip back down, which would have been a better design, as you will lose the heat in the pot if you (read: my husband) forget to push it down after serving. That said, if you do push it down, it seals pretty well and you can tip the pot without coffee leakage. - This is an 8 (eight) cup pot. Don't believe what it tells you. You will get 8 dainty cups or 4 good ol' American coffee mugs full of coffee out of a full pot on this machine. Adjust your coffee scoops accordingly. I used 5 scoops in my first pot and boy was it strong. I had to take a Sominex to go to sleep that night. I use 2 scoops to brew half a pot and it is plenty rich. I will get my two mugs of coffee or a little better than a full to-go mug in the morning from a half pot. - Can be too tall for some counter/cabinet installations. I am sad for you if this is your circumstance because you are missing out on a pretty good machine. I have had smoother coffee from a percolator. I understand the best brew is from a press-pot, but my first experience with press-pot coffee was messy and not pleasurable. Both involve a lot of personal involvement and time in brewing a pot of coffee. Vacuum pots also involve too much of my cooperation and they are dangerous, inconsistent and potentially messy. I tried brewing my own coffee for a while, but in the end, I needed a little more convenience and freedom in the morning and an automatic brewer gives me that. For now, I am one happy customer.

I'd also recommend: None. It is in a class by itself!

This is an awesome coffee maker. I had a similar model Krups for more than 8 years. I purchased Bunn unit and took it back within 4 days because of a malfunction. I then bought this unit and the coffee is rich and bold. Coffee comes out hot enough for me to not be too hot. With the screen cone filter, the coffee taste even better than my last Krups unit that I used paper cone filters with. Sharp looking accessory on my countertop as well. Simple, easy to use and very affordable. This one is a winner!

I think the handle was designed by an industrial artist with no concern for ergonomics. The tapered handle feels like it is about to slip out of your hand which forces me to grip it tighter than necessary. The hole in the the top of the carafe is too small to put your hand in to clean it when empty so instead of a sponge to wipe it I had to buy a baby bottle cleaner. The carafe keeps the coffee nice and hot and the lid is easily removed.

Overall, we like it a great deal and would buy it again. It is simple to use and, unlike others we have used, gets the water hot enough to make a good cup of coffee. The thermal carafe works well. Two negative factors are that the level of the water in the well is difficult to see. But the worst characteristic is the inability of pouring the coffee without it spilling on the counter (especially when the pot is fairly full). I was a little surprised that it has no clock or timer settings. But that's okay, Overall result is a great cup of coffee, and that's what it's about.

I'd also recommend: none. We have tried others and this is the best.

This coffee maker will make you regret the day you bought it with passionate fury. Its pitcher is designed to spill all over your counter and cup. The button to release the filter and the water holder look identical and once the water holder is out it's impossible to lock back, so it will spill another 6 cups of water on your counter. Also for the money why doesn't it have a timer? Or any features that work properly?
