Michigan-born Kenneth Jay Lane graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1954 and moved to New York for a stint as a Vogue Art Director. Shoes were his starting point - he worked on collections for Delman and Christian Dior - and it was whilst working for the latter that he began to embellish shoes with rhinestones and play around with ideas for jewelry.
