Depending on the manufacturer, I wear between a 10.5 and a 12, most commonly an 11.5 (US). In these, the 10.5 was too small, and the 11 is a little too long, but very comfortable, so I don't mind. The width is really nice. I recently tried the Dr. Martens Men's 3989 Oxford (size 11.5), and even after several days on a stretching device, they're just too narrow for my feet. But these have plenty of room. About the "less formal" look - In my opinion, these would be acceptable at everything but a black tie event (and really, they would be fine there). They just look like a nicely broken in pair of nice shoes. They remind me of how my dad's shoes looked after a few months of wear and shines. If you can't tell, I think they look great! The sole is also great - it's thick and sturdy/stiff. Many shoes these days have a sole that is just too flexible for me (my feet enjoy as much support as they can get), and these definitely go against that trend. They've also got some nice lugs on the rubber sole for good traction. These are exactly the shoes I was looking for to wear with everything from jeans to a custom suit.

Nice shoe, just as pictured, a bit casual. Black with lighter brown stitching, so at times the shoes almost look dark brown.
