Johnston & Murphy Reviews
The color was perfect but sizing is very narrow. Great looking shoe. I couldn't get my foot in the shoe without a shoehorn and then it was way too narrow and it is the same size I always wear in J&M shoes.
Wow, these are great! They go great with Jeans and are comfortable enough for all day & evening wear. Spent 2 straight days/nights walking and dancing without foot or leg soreness. The color of the leather was a bit lighter than what is pictured here - but will likely darken after a few polishes. One minor gripe is that the standard insole is likely to come out when taking them off - this started after about a week of wearing them. I generally replace the insoles with more comfortable inserts, so it's not a big deal for me.
I usually wear Bostonian, first pair of J&M. These shoes are great, so comfortable and look good with just about anything. The lamb skin lining is awesome, I love wearing these shoes. Bought black originally and liked so much ordered brown a couple weeks later. I am picky about my shoes, and these are by far the best shoes for someone on the go I have ever owned. They are light, no break in needed, and so soft inside with great breathability. . Zappos got them to me the next day, perfect all around.
Great feel and comfort for a wingtip right outta the box. Attention to detail and quality construction you definitely get from J&M with this shoe.
Nice shoe but the medium width was to narrow. I never have had to buy a wide shoe before. As they are made of leather over time the shoe will stretch some and hopefully be a good shoe.
These shoes are very classy shoes. They fit very well to size, maybe I just have large feet. They do take a while to break in and get comfortable but after that they are a very good shoe. They can be a pain to lace however.
Great comfortable shoes. I only wish it that Zappos could change the shoe market by having an extra pair of laces included with each pair! They are so nice for casual or dress that I do not want to take them off my feet. However, I do take them off to go to bed. Unless of course I am standing up and fall asleep. The other shoes that I have trouble taking off are Born Bolt and my Cole Haan's.
This is a great shoe! The dual width insole is pure genius. I am between medium and wide width, so removing the top footbed made it fit like a glove. Sturdy leather requires some break-in, but overall this is a solid, stylish shoe at a reasonable price.
Love the look and quality of this shoe but I couldn't get it on my foot. I have a high instep and that is where this shoe didn't work. My foot went in about 3/4 of the way and topped out at the tongue. There was no way in the world my foot was going into this shoe. I wish it would have. Love Zappos though.
Husband loved these shoes, so purchased a second black pair and a cordovan pair. They take 3-4 wearings to break in. Comfortable and classy. Great news is they can be sent in to J & M for refurbishment! Excellent value.
Shoes were very comfortable but two pairs in a row developed a very loud creaking noise in the sole after about two weeks. Thankfully I bought them from Zappos because they went out of their way to help me. Probably won't buy any more J&M's though, especially considering their price. Went back to Ecco.
Good looking shoe with excellent cushioning. The shoe was a full size too long, yet fit very snug around the rest of my foot. Also found these shoes to weigh more than typical.

I've worn the Melton for over 15 years. It was the first "expensive" dress shoe I ever purchased after college. It has a classic, conservative, clean look to it. One of the reasons I love this shoe is that it is a repairable shoe, so with care, maintenance, and occasional heel and sole replacement, you should get many years of use out of this phenomenal shoe. One of the other reasons I love this shoe is the need for me to wear an orthotic to balance out knee issues. The Melton provides ample space to allow for an orthotic to be worn while maintaining a superior level of comfort.

At first glance, it may almost appear black. This should change over time, but be aware this is a very dark color.
Feel wonderful on your feet. I guess I would call these my comfort shoes. Very disappointed with the look though. Have a very plastic look. I truly didn't check to see if these are leather but if they are, it is a very, very poor grade of leather.
I ordered these Tuesday afternoon and they were on my doorstep the following day. Just tried them on and they are fairly comfortable right out of the box. The insole is very soft and I expect after they're worn a few times the upper will be just as soft but like most dress shoes they're pretty stiff right away. I followed the advice of some of the other reviews and ordered 1/2 size smaller than usual and am glad I did because they are a longer shoe. The width feels true to size. The color looks like it does in the pictures except the toe of the wingtip is blended to another shade of darker brown. There are small minor issues, like the tongue is only dyed or painted for the section that's visible and some random paint marks, but the brouging does a good job or drawing attention away from the flaws. Overall it initially seems like a solid shoe for the price.
I ordered a full size smaller than my actual dress shoe size of 10.5 W. Ordering a 9.5 W was a good decision. They fit perfectly and are very comfortable. One thing, pay close attention to the pictures, especially the top view photo. These are definitely somewhat square toe shoes. If that is not what you are looking for, then pay close attention because most of the photos don't shoe this well. I don't like square toe shoes much, but these look pretty good regardless and when polished up look great. I will be buying another pair in black.
From the first time I put these shoes on they were very comfortable. No "break in" required. J&M quality.
Fantastic shoes. I have a wide foot and got the wide size and fits perfectly. Very comfortable and stylish. I originally got the black and then went back to get the brown too. I have no worries about walking around in them all day.
Just got these in today and am quite impressed. I wear a B (narrow) and these are perfect. Very attractive and nicely finished. You don't get much for this price anymore but these are a bargain at that price.

The company known today as Johnston & Murphy® was founded in 1850 by William J. Dudley, an immigrant English shoemaker who established his shoe factory in Newark, New Jersey.
