New to adventure racing and was looking for a solution to hold my compass and keep it from swinging around. I was going to sew up a pouch and attach it to shoulder and waist straps at my side. Then I figure I would make two. The other one would hold my camera (waterproof). I came across this solution. At first I couldn't find one anywhere other than overseas. Additionally, the attachment points are proprietary to inov-8. I put off the purchase. When Zappos popped up later with the item I took a chance on being able to come up with my own attachment points. I bought one for both myself and my wife. The quality is pretty good. It's very lightweight and the pouches do a good job of keeping water splashes out. Not waterproof and some stuff did get wet, but it didn't allow enough water in to pool in the pocket and weight down the pack. For attachment I ended up sewing my own. Simply sewing a 1" strap buckle to my shoulder strap, discarding the inov-8 buckle and threading up the new buckle. Works great! During the race I was able to access my most used gear stored in the front. Nutrition was in the lower pouch of my backpack -- and a Camelbak Lobo. In the front was my up-close reading glasses (used sunglasses most of the day, but need help reading the fine details of the map), pens, compass, camera, rag, and, of course, the map. On the bike, the map was on the clipboard. While trekking the map was folded and tucked in the main pocket of the pouch. One thing you need to be aware of, and you really should pre-race everything to familiar yourself with all new gear, the main pocket is open halfway in the front. My wife tucked the course sheet in from the top not realizing it was half open and ended up dropping the sheet. I saw it, but almost got run over by following racers as I stopped to pick it up. The only issue I think I might have is heat in the summertime, but during the race in 50-70F temps it was fine. Definitely helped with not having to doff and don the pack to get to gear. I found it better than you carrying your partner's gear, and you theirs, as you don't have to ask them to stop while you rummage for gear. They can do their thing while you do yours. I'll be adding buckles to my other packs to accommodate this piece of kit. Inov-8 should sell the buckles for attaching to other packs so they can sell more of these things.
