First things first: in general, Inov-8's are unusual, but in a good way. They're light and minimalist with a sort of low-to-the-ground feeling, which I think is perfect for trails. But if you're used to cushy converted road shoes, they take a few runs to get used to. I converted two years ago and while I've also tried trail shoes from Montrail, Salomon, Adidas, and Lafuma, I always go back to Inov-8s. The first thing I noticed about them is how stable they are, especially going downhill on loose or rocky surfaces. They are very supportive and provide plenty of protection from sharp stones underfoot, and have a nice roomy toe box. The FlyRoc 310 in particular is my favorite for anything except running in snow or in really sloppy conditions, when a more aggressive sole pattern like on the Roclites is better.

Recommended to me in a CrossFit Endurance certification seminar for having a good stiff sole and being good for POSE method running; these shoes have absolutely delivered as advertised. Been running on them for two months now and love them. Tread is burly and great for off road; stiff sole makes them great for most crossfit WODs short of max effort lifts, too.

Light and comfortable, good fit, very little underfoot protection, mud stays in between lugs, almost zero cushioning, good for cutting the grass with a cold glass of lemonade, and quiet walks on the beach.

Love it! This shoe has been great since the moment I put them on my feet. I used it for trails in Arizona and it had great traction and was light and airy. In Florida, my feet have gotten soaked, but these shoes dry quick. I think these shoes are great for those who do not want a lot of bulk.

Great Trail Shoes - Wear 9.5 regular shoes, 10 for running shoes, 10.5 for these. 10 were too tight around the toe box. The web/lacing system provides a good fit around the midfoot and is similar to the Asics Trail Attack (but not as tight). The profile is low. The sole is aggressively treaded with sticky rubber. The heel rubbed a little underneath my ankles until broken in. For me, this is the best Inov-8 trail training shoe. The Mudroc is good for fell/off-road and the Roclite felt a little too much like running shoes for my taste. I have used Brooks Cascadia, Asics Trail Attack, and New Balance 873 and these have the lowest profile (and least cushioning) if you are concerned about ankle sprains. At the same time, I would not use these for running on pavement or hard packed trails without rocks or roots. The other shoes are more responsive for that terrain.

Good training shoe. This is a good training shoe and it is very light, but I would use a lighter style for racing.

Flyroc - Great shoe, super light and stayed dry for 1.5miles in tall wet grass. Grips great on mud grass and rock, just not wet rock.

Interesting but with problems - Excellent sole, traction, and self cleaning properties, good toe protection but... there is zero cushioning in this shoe. Run it on loam, grass, but not rocky trails. Ouch! The heel counter does not grab the heel bone well; I blistered badly on both heels. The shoe is now relegated to short speed work on grass.

Best made trail shoe - The Fly Roc 310 is the most durable, supportive and thoughtfully made trail shoe that I've used. It laces and secures the fit without loosening, is easy to put on and remove, excels in construction and appearance. The soles self clean better than New Balance or Adidas and the design is clean and without unnecessary decoration. I look forward to obtaining other Inov-8 styles.

Better for racing rather than training - I run and race mostly on hilly trails in the San Francisco area, and I'm always on the lookout for lightweight trail shoes with very aggressive treads that really grip, especially on treacherous steep downhills. The FlyRocs are about the closest I've found. I feel very safe and stable on steep terrain, and they are only slightly heavier than traditional racing flats which are useless on trails. They have better support than cross country racing shoes (with or without spikes), though I find the FlyRocs rather too stiff for everyday training runs. I'm happy with my purchase, but I'm saving my pair for races when I can trade a little comfort for lightness and super grip.

Cute shoe, not cushy enough for my taste - I love the look of this shoe, and I appreciate the ethics of this company, but sadly am sending this pair back. The toe box is narrower than I'd like: my thumb-toe has plenty of room, but my outside toes are a little squashed in there. The other problem for me is the lack of cushioning; I don't need or want lots, but I like a little bit of spring in my running shoes. I don't feel any in the FlyRoc. Not much arch support either, but that didn't matter to me as I've got my own orthotic inserts. Very cute shoes though, and if I was looking for shoes to walk around town in rather than to run in I would probably keep them.

Finally a narrow fitting shoe - I have really narrow feet, and this is the first shoe that actually fit without having to wear thick socks and still has my foot flop around. To make them more shock absorbent I put a set of gel insoles underneath the insoles that come in the shoe. They were comfortable right out of the box on 5 mile fast walks on dirt/sand paths.

FlyRoc 310 - Fit is not ideal - one size feels slightly too tight yet next 1/2 size up feels way too big. The upper comes up very high around the ankle area which takes a bit of getting use to. The shoe is also very narrow around the toe area but wide at the heel, which means my feet slide forward unless I lace them very tightly. They feel very hard (lacking cushioning) on hard packed trails and are not good for running over stony trails (you can feel the rocks underneath). Good points include light weight construction (although stitching started to fray after only a few wears) and low cut upper around the heel (protects the Achilles from bruising on down hills).

Awesome out of box - I got these off of Zappos because of the free shipping deal. They are the ultimate trail shoe. I had the Inov8-Flites loved them and wore them down. The shipping from Zappos is super quick. I got these puppies and hit the trail. I got the FlyRocs because I read a review about the Terrocs making a guy feel like a "gazelle" well I wanted to feel like a grizzly bear that would chase down the gazelle, eat it, then run down the mountain goat, chew it to piece’s and then the mountain lion and moose and… well you get the point. I can gladly say these shoes fit that visualization. I ran the muddy sneaker 20k in the finger lakes of NY and I was told by another runner after the race that I took 1 strike per his 3 as I dusted him down the swampy mountain. I’m 5’5”, 153lbs, normal footed. It you fit that shadow, you’ll love these shoes. I'll be running in several national parks this summer with these shoes including Grand Canyon, Grand Teton, Crater Lake, Mount Reigna, Glacier and more.

Lightweight and comfortable - I have the fussiest feet in the world, and these are wonderful--lightweight and very comfortable. Lots of toe room too. They've already been great both for long city walks on concrete, and hikes in the country.

I wear a 10.5, but these run slightly small. My big toe just hits the front; however, I fear an 11 would be too large. Not quite as comfortable as I would like.

Good shoe - I use this shoe with a custom orthotic designed to support my high-arched feet. Despite the shoes' being low profile, they accommodated the orthotic very well, and still allowed my feet to have room. The traction is incredible for most surfaces. Not the best - IMO - if you are running on trails with lots of roots and/or bigger rocks as you do feel these underneath.

Great shoe - I live on the SE coast of NC so no mountains but we do have lots of sandy rough hilly woods with marsh and swamp, think back lot of Apocalypse Now. I got the FlyRoc 310's on a Mon, ran on Tues, best run I've had all year, road or trail. I love them and will be getting a Mudroc pair for the Green Swamp trails. Fits perfect if you pay attention to ordering, light as air, just a great shoe.

A well-made running shoe - This is a narrow shoe with good ankle support and excellent grip. The lacing is tight but comfortable. The shoe is very light and very attractive as well. I ordered half a size larger to accommodate a Morton's toe. I wear them to the gym, on trails and to do shopping.

Best all-around trail shoes I've every owned - I won these shoes about a year ago from a trail running magazine, and have really enjoyed them. The uppers are like there's nothing on your feet, but the soles are really supportive. The thing I especially appreciate about the fit is the narrow heel and proportionally long toebox. Usually if I get a shoe that fits really well in the heel, the toebox is too short, but these are perfectly proportioned for my feet. They're made to wear with thinner socks, and they fit the best with some medium weight coolmax running socks, but I've worn them with expedition weight wool socks and they still fit fine. The lacing system is high enough that it really snugs your foot in for downhills. They have a surprising amount of cushioning for trail running, and are great for day hiking with a light pack. After you've worn them, you'll wonder why so many other shoes have such beefy uppers, when these are so light but provide such incredible fit and support. Before I wore them I wondered if the "ribbon" on the sides would cut into my feet, but I've never been aware of it at all.
