I ran 3x per week for ~5 months in these shoes in the Marin Headlands where the trails are predominantly dirt (dry) with minor sections of rock. The good: This was my first pair of Hokas and I liken them to a 29er mountain bike: they crush through everything with an unparalleled level of comfort (up and down hill). The speed lacing system required minimal adjustment on my longer runs (2-3 hours) and the cushioning held up really well for the life of the shoe. The not so good: The soles don't last and you'll need to get another pair after 5 months of moderate use. I was really shocked by this. Many years ago I was a product tester for Nike and we obsessed over the materials used in the soles of trail running shoes to ensure runners had great traction in a variety of conditions without compromising the desired longevity. Historically, manufacturers often had to compromise here: sticky soles that gripped well to rocks and slick surfaces had a tendancy to wear out more quickly than soles that weren't as sticky. That's less of an issue today with some of the more modern materials than it was years ago (Vibram aced that problem for climbers and alpinists). In other words, shoe manufacturers have a balance to strike here and I think Hoka One One needs to go back to the drawing board on the materials used in the soles for this shoe. Why? Because for a moderate runner like me, I was able to completely wear off ALL the traction on the soles. Personally, I don't think Hoka struck the right balance here between traction and longevity with their chosen materials. While this is a really fantastic shoe, it still needs work in this one area, and it's an important area for a trail shoe. Bottom line: I'd strongly recommend the shoe but I'm not convinced the "trail" version is ultimately better than the road version once you've put moderate mileage into them. The Stinson Trail is a true trail shoe for the first several months, then becomes a road shoe with little traction left for the trails (and arguably less than ideal traction for the road). Finally, for anyone who needs the ability to pivot quickly around sharp corners at speed, be aware that you'll need to acclimate to this shoe. This isn't a bad thing, you just need to realize that these shoes are different and embrace the fact that you're getting other benefits being on a more elevated, cushioned platform. Simply put, you won't have the same stability or agility when making quick turns, but once you've acclimated to the shoe, you're going to love them on rocky trails.

These are the most comfortable shoes on the planet. Period. Many people say that about shoes they review but if so then they have never tried these. They dont just have cushioning they are literally like walking on a mattress. This is great but it is also something to beware of. Because they are tall and squishy I have rolled my ankle numerous times and this could be a problem for an older person or someone who may be a little bit fragile. Having said that I have to also say that these shoes are least durable shoe on the planet as well. Unless there is a shoe out there made out of paper towels then these are the worst for durability. I have worn through both pairs, torn sides, within a month. Shoes typically last me quite a while and I rarely wear through them. I would give these shoes 6 stars if they were more durable.

I'd also recommend: Nike

I'm very stoked on these shoes. Too expensive, and hard to take the leap not having tried them before but I am glad I did. I've tried all kinds of shoes from barefoot to minimalist to motion control, on and on. With these I'm running without foot pain for the first time in ages (I had a lot of ball-of-foot pain with previous shoes), and am not having plantar fasciitis issues which have plagued me as well. Plus, they're really fun!

These shoes were recommended to me by a jogging buddy who is also my size and age. They are wonderful and have allowed me to resume daily running without knee and hip pain.

These are my first Hoka's and they have worked pretty well for me. I have wide feet and high arches but the shoes seem to fit well. I had an initial issue with calf pain the first few miles of each run. However, once I switched to the second pair of inserts that came with the shoes that went away. They are great shoes that are my goto for any trail run. If I had an ask it would be to raise the heel more; not more padding but change the angle of the foot so the heel is relatively higher than it is now.
