The Frye Company was founded in 1863 by John A. Frye, a shoemaker from England. Frye products have a long and illustrious history. Frye boots were worn by soldiers for both sides of America’s Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-America war, and for Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Many New England families during the mid and late 1800’s wore Frye boots as they pioneered across the country to the West.

Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.

In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.

The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

If you haven't even purchased a 'real' leather boot before, please read... Fryes are made to last a life time. The Veronica Slouch is no exception. Order your normal size. I usually wear a six so I ordered a six. Put on a short or ankle height sock of medium thickness. I like to use my running socks. Sit down. Unpack your boots. Smell them. If you are like me, say, "Ooooh. Aaaah." a few times. Then put them on. When you first put them on, you WILL think that they are WAY too small. You will struggle and possibly break a sweat getting this boot on your foot. Pull the shaft up straight and stomp your way in. Make sure you have enough lenth in front of your toe...I have about 3/4 of an inch. Walk around long enough to make sure your heel doesn't rub badly. Your boots will break in after a bit of wear...I usually wear mine 24/7 for a few weeks until they feel like old friends. If your leather boots are loose when you get them or fit perfectly out the box, know they are going to stretch and mold to your foot and may or may not be too big or start rubbing as they do. A boot that feels a bit tight to get on in the ankle area and a little stiff on is going to relax into a great fit. Ok, I ordered the Cognac Stone Wash and the distressed dark brown. I have to say they are both amazingly gorgeous boots of two different flavors. I'm keeping the cognac. I'd keep both if my wallet allowed. The cognac is perfectly distressed on the outside...they look like you've inherited them from your John Wayne grandfather, but better. The dark brown is a beautiful full-grain leather with minor reddish-toned variations. They are much dressier and polished. A final note...I have very athletic calves. The regular Veronica slouch might not fit you like you expect if you have legs like me. My naked calves measure about 15 inches around at their widest so the Veronica doesn't do much slouching. I certainly can fit my skinny jeans or leggings in there but there isn't room to spare. I'm hoping down the road to either get the shaft stretched by a cobbler or broken in enough so that I can wear thick socks over my skinny jeans with the boots. If you like the way these look, order them. I know everyone says that, but they are timeless and soft and amazing!

Just rec'd them and put them right back out in the mail for return. They run small. I always wear an 8.5 these were tight with thin socks on. They also hit the unflattering part of your calf area of your leg. Just not cute for that price.

Get these! I love Frye boots. I have 5 pairs of Frye boots. I was looking this year for a great pair of brown boots and tried several brands...since I already had these in black I finally returned (yet again) my other purchases from Zappos this pair. I am so glad I did. They are beautiful. Slip them on with a plastic produce bag if you have a hard time getting them on the first time...after that you won't have a problem. Save yourself the time and just get Frye boots. Thank you Zappos for your great customer service.

I thought I would add a review here from the perspective of someone who has owned these boots for two years. They are wonderful, amazing, so comfortable. I have walked miles and miles in these, probably every day for the past two winters, more or less. They have held up really well. The only problem for me now is that the leather has relaxed so much in the ankle that now they are very slouchy, and I do not know if anything can be done. I have big calves to begin with, which is why I chose these boots. Now I am at the last hole on the top buckle, and they still slide down within minutes. It is not the calf circumference, it is that the ankle is not supporting the upper part of the boot. This is not a complaint as the boots have served me well, I just do not like the super slouchy look, like puddles of leather around my ankle. This is a recent issue, so I would say that it took a solid two years of heavy wearing for this to happen. I hope this is helpful info. Also, Fryes are consistently half a size large for me (I own four pairs, all 7½, while I am an 8 in all other shoes).

I bought these boots a little over a year ago, and I still love them and wear them every chance I get. I'm a 6.5-7, and got the 6.5 upon advice from the Nordstrom associate. They felt pretty snug at first and I could only wear very thin socks, and for the first month I toyed with the idea of exchanging them for the 7's. The snugness was more in the narrowness of the toe bed, but not the length. I'm glad I didn't exchange them though, because they definitely stretched out just like the high quality Frye leather is known to do, and now they fit so perfectly. I can also wear thicker socks now if I want to. The footbed never really felt padded, however, and although I never ever get blisters, my feet can get a bit tired after wearing these all day. I still adore them however, and would purchase them again in a heartbeat.

These boots were a total impulse buy. Never owned a pair of boots (except for wellies) in my life, but all of a sudden decided I needed brown riding boots. These do not disappoint! They are awesome, straight out of the box. No breaking in required. I am usually a 6.5 in everything, but they didn't have my size in stock, so I ordered a 7. Wearing them with thin socks, I have just the right amount of wiggle room for my toes, so I think it was a good thing I sized up. They are not too heavy, which was a fear I had about boots in general. I bet I could walk in these things all day if I had to. I have thick calves, but they fit just fine. They are price-y, but worth every penny! Must give kudos to Zappos for their amazing customer service. I ordered them late Monday night, they were on my doorstep Wednesday!
