If you love the Engineer 12R, you'll love this! I think I'm a true 6.5 in boots and almost always a 6 in flats (and by the way, weirdly a 5 in Minnetonka Kilty mocs). Medium-width foot. This might help anyone regarding my Frye purchase history from Zappos: 6 in Harness 12R where most people size down 1/2-size, 6.5 in Engineer 12R (great fit), and well, I mistakenly bought a 7 (tad too long) in Veronica Slouch that I kept. Shaft height for Vera Short is pretty much the same as the Engineer 12R. But the best part of VS is a higher heel that makes me look taller and lengthens my legs! 6.5 in both styles fit well, but the VS is just slightly narrower across the foot than the more boxy-shape of the E12R. Might be bad if you have a wide foot but for medium-width feet like mine, I really think that the leather will break in, just like my Harness 12R did within 1-2 weeks of wear by this somewhat sedentary reviewer! Best feature of VS versus the E12R: the softer leather in the shaft! I still haven't broken in the E12Rs that I bought last year and one day, I walked maybe only 6-7 blocks and the stiff bend/crease of the leather totally rubbed my achilles heel area raw, but these boots will not do that. The leather on the shaft of VS is comparable to the soft, thinner leather of the soft Veronica Slouch boots that I have in black (forgot which finish). The stitching and/or tags around the top of the boot against bare skin is a bit scratchy but I intend to wear these with leggings anyway (and moleskin tape on the inside of the boot can solve the scratch). Zappos rocks -- ordered my boots with a great rep over the phone as a VIP member after the cut-off time and these somehow still made it to me with the next-day shipping guarantee! Few more random comparisons from my recent shopping with Zappos: I'm a 6 in Sorel Joan of Arctic, 6.5 in Naughty Monkey Jump Start, and a 6 in women's Ugg boots.

Total boot perfection...an instant classic from the boot king, Frye! I own way too many Fryes, including both the Harness short and the Engineer short, and this has them both beat! Why? Just enough extra height, more padding in the foot bed, and softer leather throughout. Plus, just enough tread to keep you from slipping in the rain. Wish I could have waited for a sale, but it was flying out so fast, I couldn't take a chance! I literally can't imagine anyone being disappointed with this boot.

Love this boot. Nice heel and soft upper leather. My foot slipped right in and I walked around the house for an hour in them. Now I can't wait for the cooler weather, I know I'll be wearing these for a long time. Thank you Zappos again for great delivery service and my return of another item was quick and easy.

I love the new Frye Vera Short. They are very comfortable boots with a nice heel. I wore it all day and have no complaints. They are very stylish looking and not all western. The leather was soft above ankle and usual Frye for below ankle. I love the side buckle. Thanks again, Zappos, for speedy delivery.

I tried this in black, which was on the grey side, and thought it was okay, but not good enough. It's a very chunky shape overall, between the blocky heel and the stubby toe. Not refined enough to wear with skirts--at least not for me. The Great Boot Search continues.

About Frye
Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.
In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.
The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

These boots are very cool looking and I like that they have somewhat of a heel. However, I feel these boots run huge. I am a true 8½ and I had to go to a 7½ in these boots and I still have some heel slippage and room to move around. I may even fit into a 7.

Awesome boot. The footbed is cushier than my other pair of Frye boots -- just got them last night and I have been wearing them all day at work without any foot issues. The bottom is quite slip-proof. I got the antique black color and it's great. I have a fairly narrow foot and these fit very nicely, so maybe they wouldn't be the best for a very wide foot. I highly recommend these!

I love these boots! I have wanted a pair of Frye boots for a while now, and I spent several months debating whether or not I would break down and spend the money and which style I would get. I think that the Vera Short boots were the best choice for me. I am very short, and the thick heel on these boots is perfect because it gives me just a little bit of extra height. The boots are so comfortable to walk in too! I have worn them all day long at work, and I have not really had to break them in. The insoles molded to my feet after only a couple days of wearing them. The leather is also very soft and smells great. There are only two cons about these boots. If you have very thin calves like me, they will flop around a lot and make noise as you walk, because they are slouch boots. But that is not too bad if you wear them over skinny jeans. I think they would look too bulky on my legs if I wore them over bare legs with a skirt or dress. The second con is, the instep of the boots is very narrow. Although I have rather small, narrow feet, I found that the instep of the boots was a bit tight right out of the box. But they have gotten a bit looser as I have worn them, so that is no big deal. But these boots probably will not be comfortable for people with wide feet. Overall, I would say that these boots were great quality and an excellent purchase. They are true to size and are comfortable to wear right out of the box. I will wear them for years to come.

This is a great boot. The shaft is just the right height if you are looking for a medium shafted boot. The heel is just the right height to give a little lift. The leather is a nice brown, and is soft and will only get better over time. Unfortunately, this boot did not fit me well though. One size was large and sloppy on me, and the heel slipped. The next size down was too tight in the toes. Although the leather is soft, and would eventually stretch, I wasn't sure if it would be quite enough for comfort on my foot.

This is a great looking boot. It's really comfortable. Runs a bit big. I am an 81/2 or 9 and ordered a 9. There is a bit of slippage, but I cinched the buckle down over the arch of my foot, and it feels great now. It might be too small in an 8 1/2 in the length. There is no "wear in" period.

I love these boots & wear them constantly. They were comfy from day one...no blisters, no need to use an insert. Nice & roomy, too! The heel is great for me, too. It's just enough height to go well with jeans. I'm seriously considering a 2nd pair in brown...maybe the tall version.
Brands I'd also recommend: Doc Martens

This runs a little big. They were built to last and are very rustic looking. If you are looking for boots that look like you found them in the middle of nowhere these are them.

Like the looks but the heel slips. Seems too wide in the heel but the Frye site says that it will feel that way to start and will fit better as you wear it. I'm going to call Frye and talk to them about it before deciding to keep them.

This is probably the most comfortable Frye boot I have ever worn. It broke my heart it return them (I miss them still). I could not believe the heel wore down in a mere three weeks! Not only did the rubber wear away, but it was to the point where I was wearing away the heel itself. I then bought a different style, and the same thing happened! What has happened to Fyre's quality? It certainly is not what it used to be!

Love. Comfy, cute, versatile. I only had one day of "break in" and I've worn them gobs since with absolutely no issues. Love. (Did I mention that?)

I'm sending this boot back because my feet are swimming in it. It is huge. I can literally walk it off. Had high hopes for it too. It's a nice looking boot: not to jangled out with metal fittings but a bit edgy. The heel is wide, as is the shaft. If the heel fit at all even with thick socks, the shaft would be just fine. I like the sole and the shoe appears to make the foot look smaller. Unfortunately, I can tell that no matter how many sizes I go down, the heel will never fit. I'll keep looking for the perfect biker-ish boot.
