Make no mistake, these boots are expensive. I tried them with and without the shearling and I highly suggest to fork over the extra money and go big. You will not be disappointed. They hug your feet in a cushion of comfort and warmth. They felt great right out of the box. The exterior is well-stitched and the leather is very nice. The lighter colored strip along the bottom is much stiffer than the upper and should help improve lifetime while walking through snow and ice. The heel is surprisingly soft and creates a nice walk. I just bought these but plan to use them not only for snow and inclement weather, but also for everyday winter wear. They are that comfortable. I normally wear a 10W or sometimes EE, so bought 10½M and the fit is excellent. They are highly recommend.

I received 3 different pairs of the shearling lined version of this boot and was disappointed with the craftsmanship of all three. The issue that stuck out most was the poor quality control of the shearling lining. Glue splatter on the interior of the boot probably made during the application of the shearling lining as well as bald spots in the shearling and poor seaming. The last was shoddy application of the boot to the sole. To the average eye you may overlook all of the preceding but owning several pairs of Frye boots the quality has gone down hill. Want to love this modern day low profile version of a duck boot. But have a hard time justifying the price with sub-par craftsmanship. Can only venture a guess that it not being made in America like the two pair I currently own has something to do with it.

Overall this is a great boot. It's well made and beautiful solid excellent cushy but strong sole. The shearling lining is very plush but unfortunately it does not have shearling on the insole under the foot as I hoped, so I've returned it.

About Frye
Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.
In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.
The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.
