I'm torn on these boots. The leather and construction are first rate (this is one of the few Frye styles still made in the USA), the dark brown color is a rich shade with nice variations and the black stitching makes a good, muted contrast. Also, the toe shaping is nicely rounded with plenty of room. But the shaft is tall (hits above the widest part of my calf) and is very stiff and a full 15" around, so they gap awkwardly around my 13" calves. They look great (in a stompy-cowgirl way) with jeans tucked in, but only so-so with skirts, which I wear more often. The zipper is really prominent and I'm not convinced that it looks all that great. Basically, I can't figure out how to style these boots for my life and still justify the price. But I have a pair of the Sabrina lace-ups and love them. Those softened up quickly and I suspect that these would do the same, which would help a lot to relax their look. So I'm going to order a pair of Vera Slouch to compare and then decide. However, I can tell you that they fit true to size and look exactly as pictured. I wear between a 6 1/2 and a 7. I tried the 7, which felt fine but my (skinny) heel slipped too much, so now I have the 6 1/2, which feels good. So if you can style these babies, then give them a try!

Awesome boot exactly what I was looking for. It's a tall sleek fitted boot and I have large calves (16 inch) and they look and feel fabulous! I bought the burned red and black and absolutely love them Frye put out an awesome boot- this is my favorite one yet. I am typically a campus boot girl. Wear them proud because you will get a lot of attention in these boots! They rock!

I so didn't want to love these boots... but I couldn't help it! It's the perfect heel (not too high, not too low), with a wonderful, thick, high-quality leather and great details (rivet, stitching). I have large calves and they were pretty snug on me, so I would have to wear them in. But I suspect I will! I bought the burnt red, which is a rich, rare color, but am exchanging it for one of the browns, which is more what I need. The foot bed is a little large, but not so much that I need to size down. Another beauty from Frye!

The Frye Company was founded in 1863 by John A. Frye, a shoemaker from England. Frye products have a long and illustrious history. Frye boots were worn by soldiers for both sides of America’s Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-America war, and for Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Many New England families during the mid and late 1800’s wore Frye boots as they pioneered across the country to the West.

Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.

In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.

The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.
