The Frye Company was founded in 1863 by John A. Frye, a shoemaker from England. Frye products have a long and illustrious history. Frye boots were worn by soldiers for both sides of America’s Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-America war, and for Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Many New England families during the mid and late 1800’s wore Frye boots as they pioneered across the country to the West.

Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.

In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.

The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

Picked up a pair of these recently. Size was right on, a tiny bit narrow in the midfoot for me. Leather and quality is top-notch. Shoes looks great and is very comfortable for a long day. Will be picking up a pair in black as well. Only thing is that the bottom is a bit slick on wood surfaces, but it is starting to get better as the bottom wears in.

Unfortunately these shoes did not last nine months of normal use. I work in an office and wore these shoes maybe three times a week for the for the past eight months. Both of my soles have holes in them and I discovered this after a rain storm on my walk to work. Both of my socks were completely soaked. I love the looks of these shoes but I will be sending them back and hope that Zappos will refund my money, which for a pair of poor quality dress shoes, is a lot more than these shoes should cost. Frye Phillip should know that the quality of these shoes is worse than anything you can buy at a Payless shoe store.

These are my first pair of Fryes; I purchased size 11.5 in Cognac. They are a handsome, well-made oxford. The slightly distressed leather is soft and attractive. It's fair to say these are also the first pair of fancy shoes I've owned, and as such they leave me with mixed feelings. On a positive note, the style is exactly what I was looking for: a classic shoe of evident quality and craftsmanship. Of course, I don't find them to be as comfortable as Clarks and other rubber-soled shoes. But I'm sure this is to be expected, and I don't mind suffering just a bit for fashion.

This is a stylish and comfortable shoe. Quality leather, very well made. The leather sole is substantial but becomes comfortably flexible in a short time (it does have a paler gray appearance than the photograph would lead you to believe). Overall a really great shoe.

My review will reflect my first impression of these shoes as I have just received them. They are beautiful shoes, the leather and finish superb. Personally, I like the 'hard' comfort of traditional leather shoes, so I don't miss any 'sissy' footbed if you know what I mean. The only (small) negative is that the finish on the sole tries a bit too hard to look vintage. I will probably put a dab of shoe polish on the sides and heel, and I find it a bit overkill that the heel has been sanded down to look worn. It should be noted that this shoe is perhaps not formal enough for some conservative work environments due to the 'vintarized' look. Size-wise, I'm a 13 with a fairly low volume/narrow foot, and these fit fine. I ordered another three pairs from Frye based on this positive impression.

I'd also recommend: Allen Edmonds
