Frye makes great shoes. They're expensive, but will last forever. That said, these shoes have one minor defect- the soles provide no traction. If you are on tile or polished hardwood flooring, you'll have to constantly catch yourself from sliding to the floor. I've only worn the shoes twice so far so I can't attest as to whether or not this condition goes away as the soles break in.
Brands I'd also recommend: Doc Martins, or Blundstone

Bought these in the dark brown vintage leather for my boyfriend as a gift. Man what a great call! He loves them! They're very comfortable and the color is so much more interesting than simple black or average brown. Love that very subtle sort of strips of color swirl or marble. Hands down one of the best gifts I've picked for him.

They are much darker than shown. So dark they are really just a brown shoe since the 'distressed' color striation is hardly visible at all. But, they were otherwise very nice. (Also, I ordered two pairs so the coloring is probably consistent with the shoe in general).

These are attractive shoes, but they will take some time to break in. And they are treacherous on wet bricks, which is what nearly every sidewalk in my town is made of. No traction at all! The heel area is very stiff and my heel actually slipped off the side and I had a mild ankle sprain. So, if I ever get to wear these enough to break them in, I think I'll like them. But I got them to be everyday shoes, and that they are not. But Frye is good overall, I have three pairs. And, of course, Zappos rocks.

Great shoes. Shoes may be a little wide because I normally wear a EE and these fit me well. In response to the comments about the shoes being slick, they are no worse than any other leather bottom shoes I have. Ive been wearing them constantly since I got them.

About Frye
Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.
In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.
The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

Picked up a pair of these recently. Size was right on, a tiny bit narrow in the midfoot for me. Leather and quality is top-notch. Shoes looks great and is very comfortable for a long day. Will be picking up a pair in black as well. Only thing is that the bottom is a bit slick on wood surfaces, but it is starting to get better as the bottom wears in.

I had mixed feelings about this shoe. It's well built with quality, rugged leather. True to size, good width. Traction seems on par for leather-sole shoes, except there's a waxy white film on the sole. I'd suggest having your cobbler add a rubber sole layer for traction and better wear if you plan to use this shoe anywhere there's a chance of rain. The fit felt good initially, but the flat insole doesn't have support and doesn't feel level. The outsides of the insole seem slightly higher than the rest of the footbed, which is odd. After standing for an hour, the focused pressure on my heel was noticeable, like standing barefoot. I don't think there's much room to spare for an aftermarket insole, unfortunately. I also found the duck-bill toe shape (flattened out and pointed up at the tip) to be d-baggish. I suggest trying out this shoe if you're in the market, but I returned my pair.

My review will reflect my first impression of these shoes as I have just received them. They are beautiful shoes, the leather and finish superb. Personally, I like the 'hard' comfort of traditional leather shoes, so I don't miss any 'sissy' footbed if you know what I mean. The only (small) negative is that the finish on the sole tries a bit too hard to look vintage. I will probably put a dab of shoe polish on the sides and heel, and I find it a bit overkill that the heel has been sanded down to look worn. It should be noted that this shoe is perhaps not formal enough for some conservative work environments due to the 'vintarized' look. Size-wise, I'm a 13 with a fairly low volume/narrow foot, and these fit fine. I ordered another three pairs from Frye based on this positive impression.
Brands I'd also recommend: Allen Edmonds

These are my first pair of Fryes; I purchased size 11.5 in Cognac. They are a handsome, well-made oxford. The slightly distressed leather is soft and attractive. It's fair to say these are also the first pair of fancy shoes I've owned, and as such they leave me with mixed feelings. On a positive note, the style is exactly what I was looking for: a classic shoe of evident quality and craftsmanship. Of course, I don't find them to be as comfortable as Clarks and other rubber-soled shoes. But I'm sure this is to be expected, and I don't mind suffering just a bit for fashion.

This is a stylish and comfortable shoe. Quality leather, very well made. The leather sole is substantial but becomes comfortably flexible in a short time (it does have a paler gray appearance than the photograph would lead you to believe). Overall a really great shoe.
