Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.
In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.
The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

I just received these boots and I am very pleased with them. The only concern I have is that it is a little difficult to take them off my feet since there is no zipper. Still love them and I am going to keep them. It is true to size, and easy to walk with. Very stylish, and classy!

I was surprised that none of the other reviewers mentioned Frye's sizing. I wear a 7½ boot in almost every brand, and always order my Fryes half a size smaller. Melissa Lace Up size 7, Frye 12 Inch Harness size 7. I ordered the Melissa Back Scrunch in 7.5 and 7 to be sure, and the 7s were perfect with room for fuzzy socks, pretty consistent for Frye. I sent back the 7½s, thank you, Zappos! Order these half a size down. The dark brown antique is beautiful. They are very well made, very rich, darker than a cognac, good for dressing up or down. My calves are narrow (12"), and the boots leave a small space with my bare leg (pretty impressive with my tiny calves), and fit just perfectly around my skinny jeans' leg (13"), no gap in the back when I walk. The stretch is pretty forgiving, so this boot would not be restrictive for normal calves. Comfortable, but not super padded, with a great, stable heel, fantastic platform (that is rubberized all around) and a rubber sole (no slipping). The price made me think twice before ordering, but I decided Fryes never go out of style, are comfortable and always look better with age. My boot closet is moving towards fewer and finer. These are beautiful boots!

Beautiful boots! Even though the heel is high, the platform and quality construction make them easy to walk in. They did fit over my athletic calves because of the stretch. Unfortunately, the snug fit made my feet fall asleep after about 15 minutes. Sigh...back they go.

I absolutely love these boots! I have pretty thin legs and can never seem to find a boot that fits my calves well... Until now! The leather is so gorgeous and the fit is perfect. I ordered them in brown and everything from the stacked wooden heel to the rich leather color screams quality. As usual Zappos was awesome and I got them the next day. I usually wear an 8.5 and the fit is exact. I do have narrow feet so I was looking for a smaller circumference and narrower boot all around.

I have been on the quest for the perfect boot for quite sometime. Now, for most, this may seem like an easy task, but for me and not so much. I am 5'11 and I wear a size 11 shoe and I have a wide foot complete with a bunion (I know, my feet are jacked up!). With that being said, I have long, narrow legs. Finding a comfortable boot with a shaft high and narrow enough is a daunting task. These boots are gorgeous and for a 4 inch heel, very comfortable, but sadly, I will be returning b/c they are a bit narrow in the footbed. Other than that, they met all my requirements: comfortable, gorgeous, great tall shaft, and they fit snugly on my thin calves...but the narrow footbed is a deal breaker. I'm sad. I will be going with the black Frye Sylvia Piping which is a great boot and it's just a bit gappy on my calf but I can deal with it.
