The Frye Company was founded in 1863 by John A. Frye, a shoemaker from England. Frye products have a long and illustrious history. Frye boots were worn by soldiers for both sides of America’s Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-America war, and for Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Many New England families during the mid and late 1800’s wore Frye boots as they pioneered across the country to the West.

Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.

In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.

The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

This is my 4th pair of Frye boots. I just can't find another make that is comparable in quality. I have had great wear out of mine, but my daughter thinks their soles wear out quickly for the price. I am not hard on shoes so I can't agree with her. I wasn't sure which black to order so I called. It was explained to me that Black Soft Vintage is one solid color where as the Black Vintage is a bit worn looking and the Black rub off, even more so. I went with Black Soft Vintage. I had passed on these last year at Nordstroms and always regretted it. I only allowed myself one pair and the Jane cuff were it (another beauty). I had sleepless nights since (only partially kidding) so I went for them before they get sold out. I am a true 7 1/2 and that is what I ordered. I had no problem getting my foot in. They were a tad big with knee high stockings so I put socks on and they fit perfectly. Very comfortable. Any smaller, they would squeeze my toes. I have one foot slightly wider than the other, therefore I need to always take that into account. I do have to say that I did order these last year in tan and I wasn't as impressed with the quality . The leather was a bit cardboard like. (therefore went with the Jane cuff in tan instead). The leather on the soft black vintage is beautiful. I also found that the 7 1/2 in tan were so much smaller. I couldn't get my foot in whereas in the black, my foot goes right in. Perhaps there is a discrepancy between colors and size. Not sure. I love these and happy I decided to finally splurge. Frye boots are a bit addicting.

I disagree with a lot of the reviews for this boot. Though the leather is amazing and clearly the Frye brand speaks for itself, I find these boots incredibly uncomfortable. I have average width feet and they rub both my big toe and my little toe. The slip in the shoe bed (despite all my efforts to prevent slippage). And, they are really hard to get on and off (and I have small calves). I've had them for two years and have only worn them 5 times. I wish I could sell them or something to get something else. They take up too much space in my closet.

I loved these boots on screen but in real life they're so much better! The smell, the feel of the leather, the craftsmanship are all perfect but then again that's just Frye. I have the Jane stitch in redwood and I love them now as much as I did when I got them 4 years ago. Here are a few things I've found with these boots now that I have them in hand: 1. The black soft vintage looks really vintagy and actually borderline black/gray. I love it. Though if you're looking for something a little dressier, this color may not be it. I think the black vintage is a truer black from what I've heard. 2. No matter the boot or brand, I always have issues fitting my thick calves into boots. Most boots I can't even get half way up my calf. These are a 15" circumference (not all 15" are equal I've learned) but they actually fit over my bare leg! I was floored. The reason I will only buy Fryes now is because the cobbler can stretch them out because the quality of the leather can hold up to it. I had this done to my Jane stitches and you would never know it and I can fit jeans into them now. I'm wearing the Melissa buttons today with just stockings and it looks like they were made for my leg. I'll get them stretched anyway so I can wear them with jeans. 3. They need breaking in. It's not too bad (today is the first day I'm wearing them) but they're rubbing against the back of my heels a bit (toward the top). 4. They are very true to size. The toe box for me is just enough to wiggle my toes but if you have wide feet you may run into some issues (that the cobbler may be able to help you with). If you want to wear thicker socks you may want to go a half size up. If you're not sure, get them anyway because Zappos has the best customer service ever. You can return them and get a different size. In summary, if you're on the fence about these, don't be. The boots are everything you ever wanted in a pair of boots and more and will last you forever. My Jane Stitches look brand new and I abuse them and wear them daily. In 4 years, I've replaced the sole 1 time but the leather and inside of the boots is perfect. I highly recommend these boots and Frye in general.

Being 5 feet tall/size 6 and also a runner, finding boots that fit over my calves can be a bit of a challenge. These boots were very snug when I first put them on- almost thought I would not be able to get it over my right calf. I wore them 3 days in a row to see if they would stretch out at all and they definitely did. They fit perfectly over skinny jeans, maybe still a bit snug over cords, but are otherwise fine. I got the chocolate vintage leather which is amazing in person- they are quite unlike anything else. I would say do not be afraid of the calf size if you have muscular calves- just were them a few times for the best results.

Wonderful boots, excellent craftsmanship, and a two year warranty. After wearing them for two years of pretty tough wear, I had a problem with the right boot, contacted Frye and they replaced them for free. It's rare to find that kind of customer service today!

I hardly need to add to the tons of rave reviews about the style of the Melissa Button Boots, but I do want to describe the color I chose: the chocolate vintage. It is very different. It is a medium brown without and red tones. It is extremely distressed does have traces of some shine. It is as though the boots had originally been a high gloss boot that you had worn every day out in the desert for about 10 years. The effect is hard to describe and more understated than you might expect: they invite you to look twice and check them out. This leather makes a tremendous impact without (in my opinion) looking tacky. If you like distressed, worn in boots the chocolate vintage may really call out to you. (Frye has so many different leathers that look similar on the screen but very different in real life, especially in black. It is very helpful to me when people write which particular leather they are describing.) I found the boots true to size and very comfortable. I run daily and so have muscular calves and have no trouble wearing them over my skinny jeans.
