This is my 4th pair of Frye boots. I just can't find another make that is comparable in quality. I have had great wear out of mine, but my daughter thinks their soles wear out quickly for the price. I am not hard on shoes so I can't agree with her. I wasn't sure which black to order so I called. It was explained to me that Black Soft Vintage is one solid color where as the Black Vintage is a bit worn looking and the Black rub off, even more so. I went with Black Soft Vintage. I had passed on these last year at Nordstroms and always regretted it. I only allowed myself one pair and the Jane cuff were it (another beauty). I had sleepless nights since (only partially kidding) so I went for them before they get sold out. I am a true 7 1/2 and that is what I ordered. I had no problem getting my foot in. They were a tad big with knee high stockings so I put socks on and they fit perfectly. Very comfortable. Any smaller, they would squeeze my toes. I have one foot slightly wider than the other, therefore I need to always take that into account. I do have to say that I did order these last year in tan and I wasn't as impressed with the quality . The leather was a bit cardboard like. (therefore went with the Jane cuff in tan instead). The leather on the soft black vintage is beautiful. I also found that the 7 1/2 in tan were so much smaller. I couldn't get my foot in whereas in the black, my foot goes right in. Perhaps there is a discrepancy between colors and size. Not sure. I love these and happy I decided to finally splurge. Frye boots are a bit addicting.

I loved these boots on screen but in real life they're so much better! The smell, the feel of the leather, the craftsmanship are all perfect but then again that's just Frye. I have the Jane stitch in redwood and I love them now as much as I did when I got them 4 years ago. Here are a few things I've found with these boots now that I have them in hand: 1. The black soft vintage looks really vintagy and actually borderline black/gray. I love it. Though if you're looking for something a little dressier, this color may not be it. I think the black vintage is a truer black from what I've heard. 2. No matter the boot or brand, I always have issues fitting my thick calves into boots. Most boots I can't even get half way up my calf. These are a 15" circumference (not all 15" are equal I've learned) but they actually fit over my bare leg! I was floored. The reason I will only buy Fryes now is because the cobbler can stretch them out because the quality of the leather can hold up to it. I had this done to my Jane stitches and you would never know it and I can fit jeans into them now. I'm wearing the Melissa buttons today with just stockings and it looks like they were made for my leg. I'll get them stretched anyway so I can wear them with jeans. 3. They need breaking in. It's not too bad (today is the first day I'm wearing them) but they're rubbing against the back of my heels a bit (toward the top). 4. They are very true to size. The toe box for me is just enough to wiggle my toes but if you have wide feet you may run into some issues (that the cobbler may be able to help you with). If you want to wear thicker socks you may want to go a half size up. If you're not sure, get them anyway because Zappos has the best customer service ever. You can return them and get a different size. In summary, if you're on the fence about these, don't be. The boots are everything you ever wanted in a pair of boots and more and will last you forever. My Jane Stitches look brand new and I abuse them and wear them daily. In 4 years, I've replaced the sole 1 time but the leather and inside of the boots is perfect. I highly recommend these boots and Frye in general.

Being 5 feet tall/size 6 and also a runner, finding boots that fit over my calves can be a bit of a challenge. These boots were very snug when I first put them on- almost thought I would not be able to get it over my right calf. I wore them 3 days in a row to see if they would stretch out at all and they definitely did. They fit perfectly over skinny jeans, maybe still a bit snug over cords, but are otherwise fine. I got the chocolate vintage leather which is amazing in person- they are quite unlike anything else. I would say do not be afraid of the calf size if you have muscular calves- just were them a few times for the best results.

Wonderful boots, excellent craftsmanship, and a two year warranty. After wearing them for two years of pretty tough wear, I had a problem with the right boot, contacted Frye and they replaced them for free. It's rare to find that kind of customer service today!

These are great boots, comfortable right out of the box, and true to size. The natural color is beautiful and I don't see myself on every corner, unique and stylish. The shaft is on the narrow side--still not slim enough for me with my skinny legs, but not gaping either. Great with a leg warmer peeking out the top.

    About Frye

    of New Styles!

Add This Brand to My Favorites
The Frye Company was founded in 1863 by John A. Frye, a shoemaker from England. Frye products have a long and illustrious history. Frye boots were worn by soldiers for both sides of America’s Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-America war, and for Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Many New England families during the mid and late 1800’s wore Frye boots as they pioneered across the country to the West.

Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.

In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.

The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

These just came and already am I in love with them. I was a little skeptical because the "Jane" Frye boots literally swallowed my legs (I have small calves), but these are perfect! Definitely order a size down...even if you don't think you need to. I'm a size 8 in every pair of shoes on the planet but took a leap of faith and ordered a 7.5 in these and they fit perfectly. Plus, leather stretches. That said, they are almost impossible to get on at first. But worth it once you cram your foot in. Don't give up! They are so cute and the high quality is apparent. Buy these -- they will last you a lifetime!

I hardly need to add to the tons of rave reviews about the style of the Melissa Button Boots, but I do want to describe the color I chose: the chocolate vintage. It is very different. It is a medium brown without and red tones. It is extremely distressed does have traces of some shine. It is as though the boots had originally been a high gloss boot that you had worn every day out in the desert for about 10 years. The effect is hard to describe and more understated than you might expect: they invite you to look twice and check them out. This leather makes a tremendous impact without (in my opinion) looking tacky. If you like distressed, worn in boots the chocolate vintage may really call out to you. (Frye has so many different leathers that look similar on the screen but very different in real life, especially in black. It is very helpful to me when people write which particular leather they are describing.) I found the boots true to size and very comfortable. I run daily and so have muscular calves and have no trouble wearing them over my skinny jeans.

I looked everywhere for these boots and no one had my size except Zappos. Everyone, and I mean everyone asks me about my cool new boots. I am over 50 and worried that they would look to youthful, not so although I do feel a little younger whenever I wear them. They go with everything. Thanks Zappos!

These are my favorite boots ever! I love the look and the color (grey antique soft grain). The color is like a muddy grey and green color. They can replace your black and brown boots. I get compliments every time I wear them. It's a classic clean boot. I'm planning to purchase the shorter version soon. The first time I wore them they weren't so comfortable, after the first day they became my favorite.

It took several tries to get the right size and color (thanks to Zappos for their patience!). I put these on with my arch supports and wore them all day without discomfort. And they look fabulous with my skinny jeans. This is my first pair of Frye boots and I now understand why they cost so much. They are worth every penny. And of course, without Zappos, I don't know what I would do (go shoeless maybe). Zappos rocks!

I absolutely love these boots! They really do fit true to size, and at first I felt that they were a little roomy, but in no time the shoes molded to my feet and they fit me perfectly. The leather is very soft and feels sturdy. It is thick and very well made. The color is the most beautiful rich color, I honestly get compliments every time I wear them. They are extremely comfortable and after only a few wears, they were broken in. I honestly did not want to take them off they were so comfortable. I would highly recommend them! They will forever be classic boots that will not go out of style like so many trends do. They will stand the test of time! I have read other reviews and they are not hard to pull off and on (they do have pull tabs if you need to use them), the soles of the shoes are slick, but wearing them once or twice took care of that and they are not slippery like some people have stated. There really is nothing negative or bad that I can say about these boots. They are worth every penny! I actually bought a second pair in black and I could not be happier. One last thing is that my good friend has the exact same pair that she got almost a year ago and hers look almost identical to mine, meaning that the color has not faded, the leather has stayed just as beautiful and soft, and the boots can keep up with life. There is no need to be careful with them or protect them as they were made for wearing!

Brands I'd also recommend: none...I love FRYE boots!!

I absolutely love these boots. I have fairly small legs/calves, so finding the perfect boot to fit can be a challenge. Now, I have to be honest, they are not the easiest boots to take off. The fit is snug. Well worth every penny spent!

These are beautiful, classic, timeless boots. The color is very versatile and goes great with any color. I have never had a problem with boots fitting around my calf, but I found these to be a bit snug - especially when wearing them with jeans tucked in. So when I took the boots to my local shoe repair to have rubber soles put on the bottom (a must-do to preserve these boots), I also had them stretch the openings. The stretching was just enough to make these fit perfectly. I was so relieved that this fix worked! So be warned, they might be a bit snug in the calf, even for those of you who don't usually notice that. Oh, and I'm a true 10.5, but the size 10 fits perfectly. I find this to be the case with Frye boots - they are sized a 1/2 size down.

Here is my review after wearing these boots for one month Design: I got the brown antique soft full grain boots and they looked just like the picture. Deep brown with a slight reddish tone. The side buttons and the top dips create a great silhouette from the front and back. I love the little bit of slouch at the ankle. While they are a western boot, they can be dressed up easily, and I wear them to my business casual (emphasis on the casual) workplace. Wear and Tear: I was disappointed that my boots have 2 spots where the stitching would probably come out a bit if I fiddled with it. I didn't notice this until I had worn them for a few days. It is a minor problem, but I was expecting perfect stitching for the price of the boot. I've gotten a few scuffs on the inside/front of each boot from the hard sole of the other boot grazing it, but it doesn't look out of place because of the other natural aberrations in the antiqued leather. The only traction is on the heel, but I haven't had any slips. The inner sole in one boot had an annoying bump near the ball of my foot at first, but that went away after a couple wears. Apart from that there was no real break-in period. No blisters! These boots are very comfortable and very warm! Sizing: In other shoes I am a 6 1/2; wide, or a regular 7. I ordered a 6 1/2; to start and tried on the boot with a sneaker sock. My foot made it in with a little effort (standing up, and with the help of the side tabs), but I didn't have any wiggle room. A friend of mine has had these boots for 2 years and said that my heel should be able to move up just a little with each step. I reordered the boot in a size 7 and they fit perfectly! There is a little extra room in the toe of the foot , but it does not look or feel strange. The boots fit nicely over my average-sized calves with leggings, tights, or skinny jeans.

I love these boots! I am a true 7-1/2, and that size fits me perfectly (not too tight, some space, but not too loose) with a good sock, which is how I like to wear boots to avoid blisters. So far, I have bought Chocolate Vintage Leather, which is quite beat-up looking, but I love it, and Fawn Vintage Leather, which is a soft smooth brown/green leather, absolutely gorgeous. I am 5'5" and have skinny legs, and the shaft is perfect over skinny leans and leggings. The boots are comfortable right out of the box but get better every time I wear them. I am 59 and I don't feel like an idiot wearing these boots. The only problem is that I want at least 3 other colors. Highly addictive! An easy solution to the slippery bottom issue noted by others is to have a shoemaker add a rubber sole, which also preserves the life of the boots. It costs about $30, but I do that with all of my high end boots and shoes and it is cost effective. I have 30 year old shoes and boots that still don't need new soles.

Let me just say I heard angels singing when I opened the box. The smell of the leather and the awesomeness of the boot had me from hello! I am a size 6 1/2, and that's what I ordered. They fit perfectly. They are frickin' gorgeous and so comfortable. I almost slept in them. Totally getting another color. I love these boots! Took about a day around the house with boot socks to break in. Very comfortable (a must) and very stylish (also, a must). I also own a pair of Frye cowboy boots that I bought 4 years ago. Since they still look almost new and I love them so much I decided to spend the money on another pair of Fryes...well, I'm not disappointed and I know these will be a staple in my wardrobe for years to come. Also, I love Zappos for their great customer service.

I absolutely love the Melissa boots. This is my fourth pair of the Melissa. I have rather athletic calfs and they fit well. I would not be able to tuck in jeans with these boots without stretching them, though. The design does not offer much arch support but I must wear custom inserts so that does not matter to me. The leather is beautiful. Each color I own is great. I plan on wearing these for many years. They are made to be re-soled so I know I will wear them for years.
