Oh, baby! These boots called to me from the first time I saw them. The idea of spending $450 on a pair of boots took some getting used to, but I don't regret it. I love the style, the comfort, the quality. It was really difficult to get them zipped over my not-too-skinny calves the first time I wore them, but they stretched over the course of the day and now fit perfectly. As one of the other reviewers said, if you really love these boots but can't zip them, you might try taking them to your local shoe repair shop to have the shaft stretched. That was what I planned to do if I had been completely unable to zip them, and I'm pretty sure they could be streched by at least an inch.

I bought the cranberry color, absolutely amazingly beautiful. Nice leather, great workmanship. If you are going to walk for miles in these boots, buy some foot pads for the upper part of the sole. The boots don\'t have much padding for long distance walking but besides that are great and comfortable. The boots also grip the ground very well. Great with skinny jeans and I even wore them with a victorian burlesque costume for Halloween and they were perfect. Timeless and stylish, I plan to have these boots for rest of my life!

This may be the best shoes I've ever bought. And I've bought a lot. I love the interesting color (which matches with more things than you might imagine) and the Victorian styling is unique. I wear a lot of clothes from Anthropologie and it goes great with a bunch of that garb. The quality is commensurate with the price. I was hesitant since they are pricey, but it seems that they will last through the years. They are also pretty comfy despite the height, although I did add a ball of the foot pad for extra cushion. I wear these at least three days a week and get compliments of them every time!

I didn't get these boots through Zappos, but they're amazing enough to leave a review. I got them in slate grey, which has a beautiful antiqued look, almost as if there is a hint of green in the color. The leather is thick but still supple, and the rubber patch on the bottom of the sole and under the heel makes for a really comfortable, non-slip step. And while they're definitely fitted through the shaft, don't panic; when I first tried them on, they were hard to zip all the way up (I bought a size 8, the calf circumference is about 15.75 inches when they're done up) but the second time I wore them it wasn't a problem. Today I'm wearing them over skinny jeans in total comfort, so I think the leather and little elastic tab at the top soften to the shape of your leg. If you really can't do them up, it's probably worth a trip to a shoe repairman to have them stretched before you give up. I can walk in them all day, and I get tons of compliments. My first Frye boots are definitely a success.

Though enamored with these boots, I just sent them back today. I read another review about the calf size and didn\'t think it would be an issue for me, but unfortunately it was! I\'m not a big girl but my calves have some muscle - the boots are made for twigs! I had to slouch the boot down to my ankle to zip it to the top and it looked ridiculous. I was looking for a boot to suit my Victorian themed wedding and am totally depressed! These boots scream my style & I will be shaking my fist until I find something else shiny to become enamored with and forget all about these lovely, lovely boots ...

Additional Brand Information

The Frye Company was founded in 1863 by John A. Frye, a shoemaker from England. Frye is the oldest continuously operating shoe company in the United States. Frye products have a long and illustrious history. Frye boots were worn by soldiers for both sides of America’s Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-America war, and for Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Many New England families during the mid and late 1800’s wore Frye boots as they pioneered across the country to the West.

Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.

In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.

The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

I absolutely locw these boots! Zappos was out of my size in the Cranberry and I had to order elsewhere. But I wanted to write a review for my Zappos girls wondering if they should splurge. The answer is an emphatic yes. The boots are very comfortable even though they are four inch, hardware button detail is gorgeous. These have a rugged look but still come across as high end. They are so distinctive I know I will have them for years to come. Regarding the sizing I usually wear either a 5.5 or 6, but I decided to order the 6 and was glad I did as I have room for a regular/heavier sock in the foot if I want to do that but my foot isn't slipping. I think the 5.5 would have been a tight fit. I have normal not skinny calves for my shoe size and everything fit fine in the shaft. One more thing is that I love color and and had to have the Cranberry, but need to say that my own boots do not look nearly as bright as depicted from Zappos' website (on my monitor at least.) Here they come across as deep red but in person mine are very dark and more subdued burgundy/Cranberry color like a tall glass of the juice. They till beautiful, however. You may want to look at these on Frye's website (or another vendor) in Cranberry to confirm the shade. Enjoy!

You can always count on Frye to deliver in workmanship. I bought these for a trip to NY. I wore them in lieu of flats one day, without any discomfort. That was even after walking miles and miles of city blocks. They are especially cute with skinny jeans or leggings tucked inside of them.

Love these boots! At first I hesitated because of the price tag, but since my birthday was just around the corner I decided give them to myself as a birthday gift and I don't regret it at all. I ordered the cranberry color ones and they are just beautiful and surprisingly comfortable! Best birthday gift ever!

Beautiful boot. The antique looking buttons and diagonal seam across the forefoot are the shining features. Very comfy for such a high heel, but way too small for my large calf – I think the widest point is only 13.5 inches or so. I think I need at least 17 inches. However, I have yet to send these back because I may have them cut down to mid-height boots – that's how cool they are.

My first pair of Frye boots, and I "really" love the craftsmanship and quality of this boot. I purchased the "Cranberry" color. Very comfortable for a 4" heel.
