Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.
In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.
The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

Just got these in the mail & I love them! The photos here do not do these boots justice - check out the pictures on thefryecompany.com (I'd include my own pics but there's no way to upload..) The leather is much less shiny in person but has a natural luxe sheen. When I saw the video of the model wearing these, I was afraid that it would make my calves look huge ..they do no such thing. I understand now what other reviewers meant when they called this boot "very feminine" - the front toe area is much narrower than most engineer boots, giving it a very sleek silhouette. At first I thought it might be too narrow, but it still fits very comfortably. Because the toe box is raised from the ground, the boots feel less clunky when worn also, compared to other similar boot styles. The carved heel adds to the sleekness of the boot, and doesn't stand out on its own. I bought these for an upcoming trip, where I'll be doing a lot of city-walking. This definitely fits the bill.

True on all counts except for color. The whiskey color on the monitor looks fun and red. The boot is just a regular muted brown. Wondering if I got the right boot.

LOVE these boots! They are the perfect combo of edgy cycle chick and classic western. And the color is so cool! Totally neutral so it goes with everything! (Grey Vintage). Love Frye and LOVE Zappos! The original pair they sent had a little defect in the leather. Even though I had worn them, I called and they told me to just send them back and they would have a replacement pair for me by the next business day. Zappos customer service is tops! Thank you!

These boots are beautiful. I had to return them though. I have a wide flat foot and these are just a tad too narrow for me. I have a 7.5 in the Frye Harness and 8 in the Melissa Button which I have no issues with width wise. I really wanted them to work as the leather is so soft and the boots are so lightweight. Also for anyone wondering, I ordered the Tan Vintage color and they aren't quite as orange as the picture, very lovely color in real life.

I got the "whiskey" color and it's a russet-orange color that would pretty much go with anything and looks great with boot cut jeans. I would say the shoe fit slightly smaller than normal and would probably not work on someone with wide feet. I have somewhat narrow feet and the boot fits snugly across the ball of my foot. Maybe the leather will stretch.... The heel height is perfect and the leather has a nice sheen to it. They are a nice alternative to my other Frye boots, the harness 12r in tan and the Jenna disc short in black.
