The Frye Company was founded in 1863 by John A. Frye, a shoemaker from England. Frye products have a long and illustrious history. Frye boots were worn by soldiers for both sides of America’s Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-America war, and for Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Many New England families during the mid and late 1800’s wore Frye boots as they pioneered across the country to the West.

Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.

In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.

The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

I wanted a pair of more or less simple, quality leather, equestrian-style boots. What was important to me was that they didn't look cheap as many of the boots I see walking down the street do and that they are actually knee-high. I'm 5'6" and these hit me just a little below the knee at their lowest point, but it's close enough that I can consider them knee high. I'm a size 8-8.5 and I usually go 8.5 in boots but I decided to try the 8 based on the reviewer that said they seem to fit true to size. I tried them on with a normal sock right out of the box and they slipped right on with no issue. I think I could wear a thicker sock and still be just fine. I got the Redwood color which looked a lot redder in the picture than it does in real life, but I actually find myself kind of liking the dark brown color that it actually is. On the whole, I'm looking forward to many weekends in these.

I read lots of reviews on "how comfortable" the Frye boots were & how most of them stated that they ran a little large. Having a number of different brands of boots in my closet...I ordered these beautiful boots in my normal size 6.5. But I was very disappointed when I was not able to get them over my instep. I'm not certain that ordering a half size up is going to make that much difference & I am rather concerned that a whole size will not be a comfortable fit. So there for I will sadly be returning these beautiful boots!

Just got these and they fit like a dream! I bought Melissa Logo's last year and they were extremely comfortable so I decided to order these. I'm probably more a 10.5 than a 10 and I ordered the 10, so they seem to run a little larger than the true size. These are roomy enough for light socks without the break in/stretch you get with leather boots.

I ordered these boots in my search for a tall riding boot in black. They are absolutely beautiful! I love the metal spur on the back..makes the boot. Unfortunately, they were extremely difficult to get on. I was able to finally get my foot in with the help of a plastic grocery bag. The shaft of these boots is extremely tight on my 16 inch calves. I could get them over my skinny jeans..however they wouldn't pull all the way up. The ankle and lower calf area is big and baggy. The upper shaft is so tight...felt like a tourniquet over my legs. I thought about having them stretched at a cobbler, however with the price tag, didn't want to risk it. I think with the addition of a zipper and some stretching...they could work. Again, with the price of these, I was afraid to try. I think they are going back. So sad, as they are beautiful. I am a size 9 and the foot bed fit well. Going to try the Veronica slouch and the Melissa button back zip. If they don't work, I'm going for the Lindsay spur short!

I have to agree with the earlier anonymous reviewer. I just got these boot. I was so excited! And then I couldn't fit them past my instep. It isn't a fat calf problem (I don't have fat calves), but it seems like the ankle area of the boot is really narrow. I can't even get my foot in! I'm very disappointed. I can't imagine what the shoe would feel like if I were to be able to put it on. It's a shame. I guess I'll be returning them, too.
