The Frye Company was founded in 1863 by John A. Frye, a shoemaker from England. Frye products have a long and illustrious history. Frye boots were worn by soldiers for both sides of America’s Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-America war, and for Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Many New England families during the mid and late 1800’s wore Frye boots as they pioneered across the country to the West.

Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.

In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.

The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

These are some of the best shoes ever, and they are quickly becoming my go-to pair for a wide range of outfits. I've heard it said that brown, chunky wingtips are an essential item for any man's wardrobe, and now I can definitely see why. They go with everything! I have the tan color and other reviewers have noticed, the more they get scuffed, the more they can be dressed down - and I'd argue that they look even better that way. A bit of polish brings them back up to semi-formal level. They were very uncomfortable and stiff at first, but after wearing them in I can say that they're reasonably comfortable now.

Very pleased with fit and style of this shoe. However, within a month of purchase, the right heel came off! I was at work when it happened; luckily, there is a shoe repair in my office building. I got it fixed (and paid for the repair) but I will return if there are any more problems. Very disappointing.

I have never purchased Frye shoes before but I was drawn to the style and design. I have to say I am thrilled with my purchase. They are very comfortable and I really like the weathered look. Most reviews mentioned ordering the shoe a 1/2 size smaller, but I found that they fit better at my normal size (9.5). Of course, I had to order them twice to learn that, but Zappos' return policy makes it so easy to ship things back; the only inconvenience is having to go to the post office. Great job Zappos!

I'd also recommend: Cole Haan

This is one awesome shoe. Never again will I worry about muddy/wet walks because the shoe is already 'aged' to perfection. Yeh, people, this is my mud shoe of choice.

I'd also recommend: Forsheim Veblen (?), Duckie Brown, Allen Edmonds, Polo

Love these kicks. I was looking for a dress shoe that I could kick the snot out of someone while wearing and still look fly...I found them! Very durable construction. Fits snugly and comfortably. Feels rugged and strong. Definitely a pair of shoes that will endure time/wear and still look good - like a motorcycle jacket or an old pickup. Completely satisfied. I highly recommend.

I'd also recommend: Red Wing Shoes, Justin Boots, Spiewak

This is an awesome shoe. It can be dressed up or down. The heel is a bit high/thick which is taking my husband some getting used to. Also, his normal size was too big. He went a half size down but thinks he could even have gone a full size down.
