I was a little leery about spending so much money on a pair of shoes, but these have been worth it! It took a few wearings to break them in, but they are quite comfortable now. I love that they look "distressed" right out of the box - very stylish!

I really wanted the Frye Carson oxford, but they were out. So I bought the James Oxford and was reluctant to spend so much, but I am not disappointed. I have flat feet and it's very hard to find a good-looking shoe. But this shoe fits the bill (true to size, good arch support and very, very comfortable). Thank you Frye for making such a good shoe. Thank you Zappos for your support.

Nice quality! The color was more of a taupe than tan but I could live with that. Really large though, at least a full size. Typical Frye - gotta break it in but I'm sure it would have been comfortable.

Couldn't love these shoes any more than I do! They fit great and were extremely comfortable right out of the box. Even though they look great "distressed" as they are, I would recommend using a leather protectant otherwise raindrops, etc. may take their toll. Can be dressed up or down, both look great!

I've been looking for the perfect pair of oxfords for about 3 years, and I knew when I saw these that they were the ones. The color is one that goes with every palette, and I wear them with jeans, wool pants, corduroy, and chinos. The leather is of excellent quality; it looks even better with each scuff or blemish. I have a feeling I'll be wearing these for years to come.

About Frye
Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.
In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.
The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

Zappos is amazing. The best customer service, so thank you. Regarding the James Frye Oxford, I love them. They are beautifully made and are of a quality that belies the price point. In other words, they are well worth the price. They are very comfortable, and I'd say if anything they might run just a bit large. I am a classic size 5.5, which is the size I ordered and kept. I could probably wear a 5, but the 5.5 is nice and roomy enough to wear with or without socks.

Very disappointed in this shoe. Part of the leather and sole have a waxy-type appearance. I think this is supposed to look "distressed," but looks like it was partially dipped in something. I'm returning, and love the free return shipping!

Very well crafted shoe. I did not want a "distressed" shoe, but Frye emailed me and said it was a smooth leather that would take a nice polish. I currently use these as my military dress shoe. They did take a beautiful shine. They do feel a bit long however, I would recommend getting 1/2 size smaller than normal.

One of the most comfortable shoes I have ever owned. For someone with really flat feet and need that extra support from a high top and laces, this is just perfect. And stylish too to go with jeans or slacks.

I love the looks, leather and padded footbed of these shoes. However, there's a major problem with the fit: the heels are so wide that even with two layers of padding, my heels slip out unless I tie the shoe uncomfortably tight. If you have normal width or narrow heels, I don't recommend these shoes.

This is my first pair of Frye and I'm very happy how they turned out. They are very comfortable and stylish, lovely lovely boyish look. This color is so unique and unusual. I've gotten so many compliments. You won't easily see another pair with similar style or color. I sprayed them with Timberland water resistance spray for leather and they now handle light rain pretty well. Dress up or down with jeans. Fit true to size. Great buy!

This shoe is more beautiful up close. I found it is true to size with enough room to spare. The shoe appears to be suede in the photo, but up close it's a perfect vintage leather. I just ordered another pair in brown. I love Zappos next day delivery. Just awesome.

So I am completely in love with these shoes. They are such quality, I just feel like a better person when I wear them. I normally cheap out over shoes and most of what I wear is from Target! Nothing wrong with a good pointy Target flat, although there is zero support for my feet and walking 20m to and from work everyday was starting to wear on me. I heard about Frye from a coworker and we'd always oggle another coworker that would wear nothing but Swedish Hasbeens and Fryes and always looked fabulous in them. I had been looking for a good oxford for several months when I asked myself why not pay the money for a quality pair that isn't plastic Steve Madden stuff that will scuff and tear and make me sad. So I did. And I've never looked back! It's been about a month. (Beware of a breaking in period that will last the first few times you wear them. Fear not. The leather will soften!) and I know I will have them for years. I love them. I can wear them with jeans and a blazer or with a skirt...anything! they are so timeless yet not dowdy. I love the shape and the finish of the leather. And the occasional scuffs on these shoes simply age them more. It's a far cry from scarring the pleather on a cheaper pair of shoes. I only have the James, a friend of mine has the Erin and loves them. If you are considering Fryes, or considering the James, but them. This is a bit of money spent you will not regret. FYI: I wear a 9, unless its a pointy heel and I go up to a 9.5 or 10. I heard that these shoes run big so I bought an 8.5 and they're perfect. Wouldn't go smaller or bigger.
Brands I'd also recommend: Swedish Hasbeens, Madewell

Beautiful shoes - the photos just don't do them justice. Great with jeans or dressier pants, and comfortable! Every once in a while I find a pair of shoes I fall a little bit in love with, and I'm definitely sweet on these. These are shoes I'll enjoy wearing for years. Pricey, but well worth it.

I love these shoes, they look spectacular, and so comfortable. They felt amazing from the minute I took them out of the box. They look good with jeans or pants. I got mine in black now I want a brown pair. I wear between 8 - 8.5 , got the 8 and it was just right.

Love these shoes. Wasn't sure about the brown color in the picture but it looks great in real. I also have a pair of the Erin Oxfords in black. The James is a little more masculine looking than the Erin. I usually wear my Erins with skirts. The James Oxfords look great with jeans, baggy man's pants etc. Great quality. Worth the money.

I really like this shoe. I've worn it a couple of times now and it didn't need any breaking-in at all for me! And I have a slightly narrow heel and slightly wide toes, yet still the regular width fits. It feels solidly constructed (with Frye, you know that it is) and has a lovely, antiqued sort of finish. It can dress up or down (I mainly wear it with trousers and shirts to the office). I know I'll be able to wear it for years to come. Very happy with this purchase.

I really like the shoes a lot and I know I will wear them many times this winter. They look good, quality leather, well-made, nice soles and I think they are worth the money. I am on my feet most of the day so I need to wear comfortable shoes and these fit the bill.

As others have written, these are long in the toe. I normally wear a 7.5 or 8 and ordered these in a 7.5, but there was more space beyond the toe than feels comfortable. The width felt fine (I have narrow feet). So, back they go. The "distressed" look of the shoe was a little more casual than I want for wearing to work, but looks cool otherwise. I was impressed with the overall quality of the shoe, though, and hope that I can find a style/size that fits my foot.
