Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.
In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.
The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

My search for the perfect oxford is done. I purchased several Prada styles and one more that I don't remember and they were never right--some were too masculine looking--I still want to look like a lady--or the right bulk--some were too slim and disappeared under my trouser hem. These were perfect. I purchased black and I'm back for the brown ones!

I was hoping for a shoe that didn't look too shiny, however, the vintage shoe looks as if baby powder was dropped all over it. Disappointed.

Beautifully made, solid shoe. The two-tone is even nicer looking in person. Unfortunately, on my size 11 foot, looked a little clownish. With a heavy heart, I'm returning.

So I am completely in love with these shoes. They are such quality, I just feel like a better person when I wear them. I normally cheap out over shoes and most of what I wear is from Target! Nothing wrong with a good pointy Target flat, although there is zero support for my feet and walking 20m to and from work everyday was starting to wear on me. I heard about Frye from a coworker and we'd always oggle another coworker that would wear nothing but Swedish Hasbeens and Fryes and always looked fabulous in them. I had been looking for a good oxford for several months when I asked myself why not pay the money for a quality pair that isn't plastic Steve Madden stuff that will scuff and tear and make me sad. So I did. And I've never looked back! It's been about a month. (Beware of a breaking in period that will last the first few times you wear them. Fear not. The leather will soften!) and I know I will have them for years. I love them. I can wear them with jeans and a blazer or with a skirt...anything! they are so timeless yet not dowdy. I love the shape and the finish of the leather. And the occasional scuffs on these shoes simply age them more. It's a far cry from scarring the pleather on a cheaper pair of shoes. I only have the James, a friend of mine has the Erin and loves them. If you are considering Fryes, or considering the James, but them. This is a bit of money spent you will not regret. FYI: I wear a 9, unless its a pointy heel and I go up to a 9.5 or 10. I heard that these shoes run big so I bought an 8.5 and they're perfect. Wouldn't go smaller or bigger.
I'd also recommend: Swedish Hasbeens, Madewell

Love this shoe, like all my Frye oxfords! Very sturdy, comfortable, and good looking. Runs a bit big, though, so order a half size down.

I've been looking for the perfect pair of oxfords for about 3 years, and I knew when I saw these that they were the ones. The color is one that goes with every palette, and I wear them with jeans, wool pants, corduroy, and chinos. The leather is of excellent quality; it looks even better with each scuff or blemish. I have a feeling I'll be wearing these for years to come.
