The Frye Company was founded in 1863 by John A. Frye, a shoemaker from England. Frye products have a long and illustrious history. Frye boots were worn by soldiers for both sides of America’s Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-America war, and for Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Many New England families during the mid and late 1800’s wore Frye boots as they pioneered across the country to the West.

Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.

In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.

The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

I have a pair of Ecco Atlanta Wingtips, which I love, but I was looking for something a bit more "natural" looking (and my feet often get wet from walking on grass at work, so I needed some backups). I'm a wedding photographer, which means I often have to stand on my feet for 10-14 hours in a day. These are incredibly comfortable. It's probably not a huge deal to most people, but I really appreciate the fact that they are really quiet. This allows me to sneak around when I'm shooting a church wedding. I'm a huge fan of Clarks Desert Boots, and I feel these are even more comfortable (softer gum sole), and the break in time was much faster. A couple of quick thoughts/tips: I have very flat feet, so I added some insoles, which help a lot. As others have stated stated, my pair felt about a half size too big. I was way too excited, so I didn't exchange them. I'm kind of regretting my impatience, but it's not a huge deal. The front of the gum sole seems to have a little wear on them already, but I don't think it's going to get much worse (seems to be because these gum soles are extra soft). I get tons of compliments on them, and my feet are happy, so I'm happy. Do yourself a favor and buy some of these bad boys.

These shoes are phenomenal. I stand all day at work, and these are my most comfortable shoes. And they are beautiful as well. Don't hesitate. The style works for a more refined "casual" look, and the pillowy soft soles are just lovely.

Just got these shoes this week. Amazing in all ways. Very well-crafted as you would expect from Frye, but I didn't think they would be so comfortable right out of the box. Definitely order a half size down. I can be anywhere from a 9 to 9.5, and I ordered an 8.5 and they fit perfectly. Really stylish with a bit of rugged as well.

I'd also recommend: Tretorn, Reef

An absolutely wonderful wingtip -- very comfortable & sharp looking. Almost zero break-in time (especially compared to the excruciating hell my Red Wing oxfords put me through...11 blisters). Just one fairly nasty right heel blister (cause, a slightly raised up heel cup stitch) but over time I wore the stitch smooth. Bought size 9's (my usual)...1/2 size too large, went with 8.5's, Perfection! Love Frye boots & shoes. Big investment for sure, but in the case of Frye: a worthy big investment -- and oh what a significant history to be tethered into when you own a pair of their shoes too.

Fantastic shoes. Couldn't do better for durable comfort in rugged, refined footwear. They have excellent bones. They're like walking on clouds of chinchilla fur. I feel like my whole spine is wrapped in cotton in the Frye shoes. Well worth the money. Don't cheap out. Cough it up, man.
