Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.
In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.
The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

These boots actually have a very unique color. Not really brown but leaning toward grey/brown. Unique and I love that. Frye boot so you get what you pay for. Only wish is that there was a tad bit more arch support. Otherwise a very classy and sassy boot!

I am in love. I ordered three different styles of Fryes and these were the keepers. The soft brown color is pretty dark and could be worn with black or anything else in my opinion. I liked that these were a bit taller than the Harness 12R and the leather was a bit soft but still very sturdy. I found them true to size wearing medium weight socks and with skinny jeans tucked in - there is a bit of slippage but it is comparable to other boots that I own, and I do not find it uncomfortable. I can tell this is the first of many pairs of Fryes in my future.

I have always been a fan of Frye boots but never owned a pair. Until now! I purchased the Frye Harness Strap and absolutely love them! I did consider the regular Harness Boots but the Harness Strap feels a bit more versatile for my taste. I bought my regular size and wore them the first time all day.

This is a gorgeous boot! If you like the harness 12R, you will love this boot. The shaft is about 2 inches higher than the harness, and has a narrower shaft circumference, so it looks more tailored than the harness 12R. The leather is beautiful, soft and distressed. I got the black, and because of the distressing, it has a lighter feel than a jet black color. Absolutely beautiful! Extremely comfortable, too. Like the harness, it is a heavier boot, but I am planning to keep these forever, and like most Frye boots, they will last forever. Also, for size reference, I am normally an 8 1/2 or 9, I purchased the 8 1/2, and they fit perfectly. I am 5'4" and have thin calves, and the shaft height and circumference are perfect. Other Frye boots are huge in the calves for me, but these are great!
I'd also recommend: la canadienne, ugg, seychelles

These boots were stiff and clunky on me. They pinched and seemed like it would be a long while to stretch them out, if at all. I was hoping they would end my search for comfortable gray boots but they were not for me. I do love Zappos though.
