Purchased by my husband, because his "Harley Davidson" boots had a shaft that was narrower and he had a difficult time bending his ankle to get it into them (at his age, he probably should stick to sneakers anyway!). So, when he saw these boots, he had to have them! They are comfortable after a short break-in time and true to size (plus the shaft doesn't make him point his toes completely, so he can get them on). As for my opinion, they're Fryes, what's not to like?!

I bought these boots for motorcycle riding and that alone. But they have been so comfortable, with such high quality look and feel and construction, that I now find myself wearing them around town as well (and I usually wear sandals and slip-ons the majority of the time that I am not riding here in SoCal). They look great with jeans. These are some of the most comfortable boots I have ever worn, and the quality is obvious. Fryes are worth the extra money, in my opinion. I have had other riding buddies who have had these boots and wore them for ten years and more, taking proper care of them. I wore my last pair of Georgia steel toes for riding for over 10 years, so I hope to get that kind of use from these. They certainly look and feel like they're up for that long of a ride! These are thick leather boots, so they do require some break in. Just the same, I wore these for more than 8 hours some days, after just a few days of wearing them around the house for a couple/few hours a day on and off, for break in. Other than an initial hot spot or two, they were remarkably comfortable right out of the box and this has continued to improve over time. Now they are as comfortable as any shoes I own, or perhaps even more. They ran true to size for me, a 10.5. I have a quite a narrow heel, so I was concerned about pull on boots. My heel does move slightly in the boot when walking, but I have no discomfort or ill effect from it whatsoever, even when I am doing quite a bit of walking. On the bike, these boots are a dream. They sit on the pegs just perfect and feel balanced and effortless for shifting and braking. Paul in customer service (a former electrician who lives in boots) discussed sizing, construction, care, and break in with me for some time before I bought these. His suggestion for size was perfect and it was great to talk to someone who is so enthusiastic and knowledgeable. He even placed my order for me at the end of the call. Zappos, you continue to be the best of the best in customer service and creating happy customers! This is another of many purchases I have made here. I shop around, but always wind up back here and have never regretted it. Thanks so much!

I recently noticed my wife wearing a new pair of Frye Harness boots, and I asked about where she purchased them. She told me and also about how comfortable they were; I said I had owned a pair 40 years ago and had forgotten about them, but I was glad to see they were still being manufactured. I also decided I wanted a pair to wear on my planned motorcycle trip to Sacramento, California. We immediately got online and ordered me a pair of Frye Harness from Zappos; they were delivered within a few days. I had them for the trip. I took a chance and they were the only footwear I took with me. They were an honest fit from the first day I wore them; I walked all day long a couple of days while in Salt Lake City looking at museums and going on a tour through the State Capitol. I didn't feel like I was in a hurry to take them off at the end of the day either. I wore them all the time for two weeks while on my vacation. They make great motorcycle boots and great wearing no matter what you are doing. I never wore a more comfortable boot, and it seems the more I wear the boots the better they fit and feel. I think they actually are molding to my feet, the leather is wonderful and they are definitely classics. I had a lot of comments on them. They are just a "good lookin', good feelin' boot".

Timeless Look, Comfortable, Excellent Build - Frye's Harness 12R boots have a timeless look, are relatively comfortable, and are of excellent build. I've only had these boots for about a week, but they are about 75% broken in by wearing around the house and out for a few jaunts. This review is based on my initial thoughts after a week. Timeless Look: This style of boot has been around for a while and many other manufacturers have copied it (as far as I know Frye was first with the design) including Harley Davidson, Milwaukee, Chippewa, and a few others. I tried a few of these on and the Frye Harness had the most authentic look. They were also the most expensive, almost double the price of some brands. I'd like a pair of the Gaucho colored boots, but if you have to buy only one pair in this style I would vouch for black. It's the most versatile color and easy to keep clean. Comfort: Frye Harness 12L boots in leather are quite stiff when brand new. This, coupled with the harness, means that putting them on and pulling them off will be a challenge for the first few days, or longer: try not to pull a muscle. As recommended and by feel, I purchased a half size smaller than I usually do (compared with the correct size for my suede Frye Heath Outside Zip boots). The Harness boots will feel tight at first, particularly if you have a high instep, but they will loosen up after a few days and become fairly comfortable. I say fairly, because if you're a guy, you're probably not used to wearing heels and these boots have a good-sized heel (though not as high as on the Campus). My mildly sore back is just getting used to wearing these after a week and I'm no wuss. That said, once you get them on and start walking around they do feel great (though not as great as the Heath Outside Zip right out of the box, lower heel and soft suede). Excellent Build: The Frye 12R Harness boots are of excellent quality. Everything from the choice of leather, the stitching, finishing, and studs and rings is top notch! I am impressed, particularly when comparing these to my suede Heath Outside Zips. While I really like my Heaths, there is no comparison when it comes to build. Final Verdict: If you're in the market for Harness boots don't hesitate to get the Fryes. They are expensive, in some cases double that of other brands, but the overall package is top notch and you'll likely enjoy them for many years.

These are very comfortable boots. As soon as you take them out of the box you can tell that the are of excellent quality and craftmanship. They are true to size. These are excellent boots.

Additional Brand Information

The Frye Company was founded in 1863 by John A. Frye, a shoemaker from England. Frye is the oldest continuously operating shoe company in the United States. Frye products have a long and illustrious history. Frye boots were worn by soldiers for both sides of America’s Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-America war, and for Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Many New England families during the mid and late 1800’s wore Frye boots as they pioneered across the country to the West.

Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.

In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.

The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

This is my second pair of Frye's in 3 years. I highly recommend these boots. The fit and style are awesome. I was a little worried because I wore them 3 days in a row with no break-in. Just terrific! I get 11.5 or 12 but these are 11.5 so go half size small.

These right here are some good boots. I got them overnight and they fit just right. I had to order down .5 a size because they run a bit big. Highly recommended if you’re looking for good boots.

Fat Calf - I love everything about these boots except they are very tight around the calf. I have trouble getting into them, but once I'm in, the feet feel fine. I thought about returning them but I really wanted this to work out. I'm hoping they stretch out a little over time.

Great! My husband loves these boots & they broke in quickly. Bought a 12 and they fit him well, but after a few times of wearing them he said he wished we had ordered a 12 wide.

Classic style, a bit refined - The classic Frye Harness. A classic look without the excessive heaviness of a motorcycle boot. It fits well, looks good, and has that classic styling that always looks good.

5 Star Boots - I recently purchased the Frye Harness 12R in "Earth"(my favorite) and in "Black"(for work). I cut off the harness on the black pair to dress them up a bit. Although the website is nice, the pictures do not show the true beauty of these boots. As for service, Zappos is 5 stars. Other companies should take heed of their shipping because nothing else compares. If you intend to add insoles to these boots I strongly recommend you to purchase a size larger because the insoles will cause major crowding. This is very important for someone on their feet 8 to 12 hours a day. Excellent boots. Excellent service. Thank you Zappos!

Wow... If you're looking for a harness boot, this is it. When it comes to motorcycle boots, I’ve always been a Chippewa man (Engineer style). I decided to give the Frye Engineer a go once, but it didn't compare to my Chippewas. With that in mind, I ordered Chippewa’s Harness boot and sadly wasn't impressed. Reading the reviews on the Frye Harness, I gave in and the only mistake I made was waiting to do it. While Chippewas rule the world of the Engineer boot, Frye dominates the Harness world. The fit is perfect and the pictures don't do it justice at all! Do yourself a favor, save the time and trouble and spend that little extra and get the best Harness boot out there. I can't wait to break them in and give them some character! Thanks Zappos for another prompt delivery and service that cannot be beat!

Thanks Zappos for your fast shipping and GREAT customer service. I will shop again very soon.

What happened? I ordered these boots because of past reviews about the Frye craftsmanship. So I bought a pair of these great looking boots, fit perfect, BUT the heels were falling of the boot. Left boot the heel was half falling off and the other boot the heel had a 1/4 inch gap. Well let's see how this next pair works out.

These boots right out of the box require no "break in" period. They are extremely comfortable and strongly recommended. They are also in my opinion, a great looking boot.
