Nice boots - I love the look of these boots, but I do not like the stacked heel. It creates a kind of rocking horse gait when you walk. Otherwise, I think they look great. As like most Fryes, they take a really long time to break in.

Woohooooooooo! These are wonderful! I worked up a sweat getting these on the first time (they were snug across the top of the foot) and thought "these'll never work", but after just an hour or so of wearing them around the house, they had loosened up considerably. Comfortable, cool looking. I had gotten the "Veronica slouch", but sent them back and got these instead. For my feet, these were much more comfortable. I'm a hairstylist & on my feet 10 hours a day 3 times a week, and these are comfortable the whole day through! Zappos customer service was wonderful, as always!

Awesome boots! I've been eyeing the Frye engineer style boots for a couple of years and finally decided to splurge - luckily for me, I caught these on sale. I wore them the first day I got them and they're surprisingly comfortable right out of the box. I normally wear a 7 1/2, but ordered a 7 and, although they're a bit difficult to get on, they fit perfectly. Now I have to save up for the gaucho color!

Finally, something American... I ended up buying these boots partially on looks and partially because they're made in the USA (upstate New York). These boots look narrower than most pictures show them and the heels look slightly lower, but they're still right, comfortable after a short break-in. These boots felt a little bit smaller than I thought they'd be, but I remedied that problem by wearing thinner socks. As others have noted, this boot is somewhat difficult to pull on and off, but that's to be expected of ANY engineer boot, especially one that has any sort of contour to it. The tops of these boots do rub a little bit on the calves, but that comes with the territory of having boots with large shafts. When wearing these with tucked-in pants, that'd be a moot point, but with skirts and pants not tucked in, it's a little annoying at first. After a few days, it's barely noticeable. The only major gripe I have is that, unlike Chippewa, they didn't make these boots with steel caps.

Brands I'd also recommend: Dansko Professionals (made in Denmark), Crocs (made in Canada), Keens and Dr. Martens (both made in China, unfortunately)

    About Frye

    of New Styles!

Add This Brand to My Favorites
The Frye Company was founded in 1863 by John A. Frye, a shoemaker from England. Frye products have a long and illustrious history. Frye boots were worn by soldiers for both sides of America’s Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-America war, and for Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Many New England families during the mid and late 1800’s wore Frye boots as they pioneered across the country to the West.

Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.

In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.

The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

The boots I have been looking for! I have been looking for boots for over 4 years to replace a pair I had for a long time. These boots have good quality stiff leather, and the boot has two helpful adjustable buckles-one at the top and one at the foot. I do have wide calves and had to have the shaft stretched with a good cobbler. It worked. The boot is comfortable and solid. My foot slid a bit at the beginning, but wearing slightly thick socks and tightening the foot buckle one notch solved the problem. I am looking forward to wearing these boots with dresses and skirts.

Super-comfy after break-in period. These boots have been wonderful for me. I have other Frye styles -- Campus and Villager -- but the Engineer is definitely the most comfortable. I tried my true size and a half-size smaller, and after wearing both for a few days, ultimately decided to go with my true size. There was a break-in period of a few days... the biggest issue for me was the contour of the shaft -- specifically the way the back of the boot rubbed against my Achilles. But after breaking them in, these are now just as comfortable as my Birkenstocks and my Danskos. They were slightly difficult to take off at first, but now that they've loosened up, they slip right off my foot. These boots are going to look great when they're all worn and beat-up. I love the way they look with dresses and skirts. The contrast of feminine and masculine is super-cool. I definitely recommend this boot.

Comfortable boot for a high arch... This boot is very comfortable and offers a great deal of support, especially nice if you have a high arch! I would suggest buying a half size up from your true size. I was very please with the fit by going up a half size, it "fit like a glove."

Eureka!! I love these boots. I have been going crazy trying to find boots that work for me. I finally gave up on designer boots and opted for old faithful. I am happy I did. These boots go on easy, are super comfortable, are "Made in the USA" and work with my orthotics. The quality is amazing. I ordered both colors and have ordered the 8" from Frye's direct since Zappos doesn't carry them. My feet may look boring this season, but I will be smiling in comfort in boots that will last and look good forever. And thanks to Zappos for their usual fantastic service.

Super cute boot! I love the styling of the boot but I have a really high arch and am having trouble breaking them in. The left foot is really comfortable but the right still isn't comfy yet. The heel is solid and pretty thick so you have to be looking for a more rugged boot. Definitely not your girly-girl boot. The color is a nice neutral brown, not too red, not too chocolate.

Love these boots! I wear 7-1/2 & had to bump up to an 8. It took me 2 wearings to break them in - but now they are super comfy and I can wear them all day. Pleasantly surprised on the arch support. They are tall & they hug the calf (love that part) but if you have overly muscular calves you may have some trouble slipping into these. Yep - love these boots!

Cute tough boots but be prepared... I have been longing forever for these boots to get that "Sundance look" (long skirts with cool beat-up boots). Had to send the first pair back and order a 1/2 size up from my true size because I couldn't even get my feet into them. Second pair has been a slow break-in process. They look fantastic and are comfortable once on, but getting them on and off is embarrassingly hard for me! I have small wide feet, and getting my foot through the contours of the boot is painful, especially for the bridge of my foot. I have to stomp around, even with a thin sock. They are loosening up, though... Gaucho is a perfect deep brown, not reddish, and will look better with age. The leather is quite stiff, not soft, and chafes a bit. I'm keeping them because they look great and will last forever, once broken in, but just be warned: these are some serious boots. Zappos was awesome as always - fast free shipping and exchange can't be beat!

Stylish and Tough - When I first opened my Engineers, I was very pleased with the look. I love the color. Gaucho is a dark, warm brown, but with no hint of red tones, and the leather has a matte finish rather than a shiny polished look. The leather is already wearing beautifully. I was a bit worried at first when I could not get the shaft over my calf near the top, despite loosening the strap. However, I wore them for a few hours around the house with some stockings and they loosened up quickly just like others, and I can now tighten the calf strap. I disagree with comments from other reviewers about these running a half size small. I wear a women's 7, and ordered a 7 1/2 originally to compensate. I had to send those back because they were much too roomy. The 7's I have now fit well even with thick socks. If you are torn between two styles, go with the Engineer. They are more comfortable, and the stiffer leather, in my opinion, looks better. I've had tons of compliments on this boot, though, and you can't go wrong with Frye. I can tell these will last a long time and I'll never tire of them. It may be worth it to pick up a black pair one day.

The Best - Buy them! I'm in love with these boots. Much nicer than the Veronica slouch style. Bought them in the gaucho color and they go with everything. Bought my regular size 9 and they fit fine. Had to give a bit of a push to get my foot in, but not at all a hassle, and expected with a boot like this. Go for the taller rather than the shorter style! You won't regret the choice.

Really Cool Boots - I just got these boots today, and I love them. I am a solid size 11, but I bought a size 10 and am very happy with the size. They were tough to get on the first time (but nothing major - it took maybe 2-3 minutes of pushing), but subsequent tries have proved easier and easier and they now slip right on. Once in the boots, my feet are really comfortable--there's room to wiggle my toes, and my heel slips a little (which I hear it is supposed to do). I have pretty large calf muscles, but these boots fit perfectly over my calves. These are my first Frye boots, and I was torn between these and the Campus style, but I'm glad I went with these. The buckles and rugged look make for a really cool style, and the color (I got gaucho) is perfect for everyday wear.
